miNNe vpous public ueoAOV 7be 1950 PUBLISHED BY THE GRADUATING CLASS OF (Zentnal TltiyA. School MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA ‘Dedication To the senior class of 1950, who have accepted the challenge of youth with enthusiasm and vigor, and responded with determination and ambition in helping to build a greater Central, this book is dedicated. Therefore, when we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for present delight, nor for present use alone,- let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for; and let us think, as we lay stone on stone, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, See! This our Fathers did for us. 3 — John Ruskin ‘Vdiaye ‘DOiect uf, MHC rfc(muu4tnrttio4t Ty] U'C U,SQ IVbf - OnytfstOfaticMA rft6letic Ce fT ?AU lLL H Mr. Blume The most important public figure in a village is the mayor, and Mr. Blume is no exception. His job is a formidable one. Plus fulfilling all of the executive duties connected with Centralville, he generously volunteered to be the adviser of our village yearbook, which will aid it in attaining the highest goal possible. Other cities have tried to compete with us, but all are certain that we have surpassed them in every respect, mainly because of our executive body. And so to you, Mr. Blume, we shall always endeavor to give our utmost respect and cooperation. Mr. Anderson Mr. Anderson is the chief of police in our village. Even though this is his first term in Centralville, he has proven to be very worthy of his position. His job is a difficult one, as it is his task to see that order is kept at Centralville. He takes care of the few who are negligent of their obligations, by imposing a fine of detentions upon them. Frequently, Mr. Anderson is seen going in ond out of buildings colled study halls, seeing that everything is running smoothly. To you, Mr. Anderson, our village wishes to extend its sincere thanks and appreciation. 6 Addington, Charles U. S. Jeanette Brice Korlotte Thompson Where's everyone going? To the Centralville librory. What's the rush? One of the quiz masters, O. K. Kuenster, is giving away a great big A to the person answering the most questions on o test program tomorrow . . This, however, is not the only reason the villagers frequent the library, for who could resist the quiet atmosphere, the comfortable chairs, racks of wonderful books, the massive fireplace, and congenial people like Mrs. Brice, who is always willing to lend a helpful hand? 12 Lunchroom — Front row: Mr . The Little Theater off Fourth Avenue gives to the citizens of Centralville who are interested in drama, opportunities to participate in dramatic presentations. Three such presentations were: The Trysfing Place, The Proposal, and Pyramus and Thisbe. The first two proved to be such hits that they were presented at the University of Minnesota. The Mimes, as is the custom, puts on the annual Christmas Program. This year the famed Dickens' Christmas Carol was presented. Due to the large cast the speech class was asked to help. The two proved to be an unbeatable pair and the village cheered the production. At the polls this year the Mimes elected Leonard Bart, president; Athene Rallis, vice-president; Adele Weisman, secertary; and Bob Fitzsimmons, treasurer. This was a repeat performance for Fitz, who was treasurer last year. 14 Bock row: Barf. This is the close of just one of the excellent programs put on by an organization in Centralville known as Hl-C. Composed of the more talented members of our village, Hl-C has helped Centralville attain greater heights in the musical world. Within three short years, it has climbed from its minor rank to a major one. Today, Hl-C is recognized as one of the greatest organizations in the village. Tryouts are held once every semester, and the participants are judged by Hl-C members. The aims of the club are to promote better programs and to expose the hidden talent that lies in Centralville. What's What, hos |ust hit the newsstands of that evergrowing Central City. Jim Barber's wild calls of his trade attract us and we stop to purchase one. On the cover can be seen the famous figure of Mr. C. Sjogren, who was prominent in the organization of the World Federation, and is now the U.S. delegate. Inside the cover the pictures of the editors and comments are printed. Editor, Adele Weis-man, has made the magazine what it is today. The fashion and society editors. Miss Val Swanson and Mrs. D. Davies, the former Rita LaRue, have established themselves in their competitive fields. The magazine's able publicity agent, Jim Holman, has put its name in the public's eye. Scanning the news of today, we see Miss Jelene Larson os Miss America, happily receiving her crown. Her agent, Ken Smested, and private photographer, Dave Warren, can be seen posing the nfew queen and talking with news reporter, Dick Nelson. Flicking the pages again, suddenly we recognize the celebrated Dr. Lund at the opera. Carmen. He is escorting the famous Magnuson sisters. That man-obout-town, Jim Lindstrom, is escorting the gorgeous Miss Hanson, while another couple, Emmett and Joanie McGlade. are snapped stepping out of their limousine. Hank Holvorson, that former All-American Yale end is there with Miss D. Schultz, Hollywood's latest dancing star. Rumors are circulating about those two. That talented artist, Don Sewell, Is there also. Another page and we see that the nation's top school for girls has been given another full-page spread. The play that made such a smash hit was the Broadway favorite, The Man Who Came To Dinner. The citizens, who were excellent reviewers, showed their appreciation by all turning out on that eventful evening. The players enjoyed the cooperation of the stage crew in making their play a success. The coaching and directing was the very best to be had due to Mrs. F. Timmerman, who filled the producer-director chair. All of us Centralvillers owe our thanks to the splendid performance, which resulted in such an enjoyable evening. As the season closed. Central finished fifth in the city standings with a four win four loss record. The team's highlight of the season came when if defeated Roosevelt for the Homecoming by the score of 20 to 13. Roosevelt went on to tie for the city championship and then the annual Twin City Football Championship. Their only loss wos suffered at the hands of the Pioneers. Lettermen for the squad were Bauman, Benson, Blanchard, Cullen, Dardis, Engfer, Elvig, Fullerton, Gallagher, Halvorson, Hardy, Jensen. Kornkven, Mackay, Moorhead, Pearson, Pederson, Schultz, Spaise, Severson, Walker, Wilczeck, and Zinter. Safc otKO'ie 'Jaat aCl Centralville's sophomore football team again took the city crown, a tradition that has been kept up for quite some time, by winning five straight victories and losing none under the generalship of coach Whitey Thoreson. The team was one of the smallest ever had at Central, but was inspired on to great playing ability despite its size. Those who received numerals were Bakke, Burkstrand, Colemon, B., Carmichael, Coleman, D., Delano, Fowler, Fulkerson, Hamer. Helling, Jackson, Kaiser, Levitt, Lindmier, Larson, Monge. Central went on to the District 17 play-oR and finished runner-up ploying the splendid type of boll they had been known for. Central's basketball team was co-captained by Buddy Blanchard and Carl Thomas. SofefotHWte ‘Sa 6et6eitl Centralville's sophomore basketball squad had rough sliding as they ended up with a not too successful seoson of more losses than wins. The won-loss record really doesn't always tell the complete story as The team lost three games by very close margins, not more than one or two points. Some of the sophomores who look promising for next year's varsity squad are Levitt, Failor, Magnuson, Jackson, Burkstrand, Wahl, Quom, and Swift. The Centralville hockey feam went through the regular season losing only to South and tying with West. Then they whipped St. Paul Johnson for the Region One title, thus the Centralville hockey team went to the State Tournament for the second straight year, which is a thing not often duplicated. Although only in its second year in Centralville, wrestling has proven to be a very popular sport. The Hardymen started off the season with an eye on the title by defeating Edison and Vocational. Then the musclemen from our village ran info injuries and lost the services of co-captain, Jim Grisham and other important members of the team. After this, the wrestlers dropped decisions to Marshall, Henry, Washburn, and Roosevelt, but developed a good crop of sophomores for next year. A switch by Monge. SwimmiHQ, Centralville can well be proud of this year's swimming team. Our village mariners can consider themselves as one of the best teams Centralville has ever produced. They got off to a splashing start by faking the Wells Hodgeson Invitational. During the season, Centralville's swimmers soared to a seven victory-three loss record. The surprise of the year come when Central took the City Invitational by a large score and completely dominated the meet. The team was captained by Tom Spaise. Placing second in the Metropolitan meet, which was held at the University of Minnesota Field House at the beginning of the seoson, is just an example of the splendid spirit and winning ability of the squad as a whole. If the team keeps improving in one unit, they will be a distinct threat to the city and state championship titles. The track squad is captained by returning letterman, Paul Moorhead. Other returning trackmen are Biros, Engfer, and McGlade, who are all sure point getters. Those showing promise in getting those all-important points are Cullen, Kornkven, Pederson, and Spaise. As the season gets ready to start. Hawker's uncredited, tireless workers are preparing to give their all for the team and Central High. Centralville's crow country foam i on of the minor, unrecognized team at school. Coached by Bill Hawker, the boy come out for this sport because they like to run and enjoy this form of sport. Recognition by other cross country squod members it enough for them. Central's hard working teom took seventh place in the city. After one week of hard training for the state meet, they come up with thirteenth place on team points. Emmett McGlade took sixteenth place in the state meet. Other point getters were Jacobson, lindstrom, Humphrey, and Ryan. Coach Thoreson is expecting his third consecutive championship, just as the '48 and '49 teams took both the City and Twin City crown. Lettermen Hardy, Johnson, and Pearson will return with their normal vigor and enthusiosm to push the team to a glorious finish. Both Hardy and Pearson played on the two previous championship squads. Centralville is indeed fortunate to have this outstanding team represent it in the ensuing months as the squad takes to the courts, reaching for another double crown. One sport Centralville's boys enjoy is golf. Under the direction of Charles Addington, Central has acquired a fine team. Central's home golf matches are played at the Hiawatha Golf Course. Other matches are played at the other schools' home courses. Returning letterman Dale Petersen is slated to win most of his matches, while Vic Olson is expected to add winning points to Central's team score. Whether the golf team wins or loses they will have the enjoyment of playing in all their meets. Bock rowi Addington, Borgo. The squad is well rounded out. with returning letfermen strengthening important positions. Carl Thomas leads the hurlers while Tuck, Fullerton, Olson, and Blanchard dominate the batting and fielding. Spring training got off to a poor start due to the existing weather conditions. Coach Hardy kept the team busy indoors limbering up unused muscles and perfecting the smoothness of last year's team. When the weather finally took a turn to the good, the squad was ready to begin its long practice sessions, which help to make a championship baseball club. Th feam was put in readiness for its first big game at Nicollet Field, and under the eye of Marv Hardy, showed the caliber that will again make them title challengers for the city crown.
