Harold Miles, who is proving himself to be a musician first class. Have you ever heard a concert band play a symphony? This band did it at their big concert in March. It was conducted in a regal way with no one else but Miss America as guest soloist. Band members have also obtained liberty and appeared on shore at other high schools in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. 17 HI C—Bottom Row: S. McCoy, R. Oshima, S. O'Donnoll, N. Stelnlco. K. Wallner. M. CAMERA CLUB . . . What better way to remember a voyage than with pictures? And the Camera Club has provided us with living momentoes of our past year on the Good Ship Central. Newly organized this year, the Camera Club is made up entirely of boys, but any boy that is interested may join. As the newest club on board, under the guidance of Mr. Hovey, it is fast becoming one of the most active. CAMERA CLUB—Bottom Row: R. Hovey J. Martino. D. Worren, B. Schramck. Second Row: L. Joos, G. It also accepts those who would become fluent in German and Spanish. During our long voyage the Red Cross engages in worthwhile activities to cheer up the many seamen who landed in sick bay during their cruise over life's troublesome waters. Among these activities were decorating Christmas trees and tray favors for the wounded veterans. Under the guidance of Miss Florence Legate, the local chapter staged an assembly and a drive for membership. BANKING .. . What fun can any sailor have on shore leave without a bankroll! Provision for sufficient funds is in the hands of clever financiers and clerical experts. Every Tuesday bags of coin go into safe keeping. The high scholastic requirements of the National Honor Society make it an exclusive organization. Only A Juniors with a 2.75 average, the B Seniors with a 2.50 average, and the A Seniors with a 2.25 average are admitted. With averages determined by the following: A—3, B—2, C—I, the Honor Society maintains a high criteria for admission. Scholarship isn't the only requirement, however. With high hopes we drove forward. The rains came—organization, dummy, shooting schedule and cover. Quick flashes and pictures were taken. Deep into the heart of the torrent we went—pictures, mounting, and scaring up a messenger to relay our work to the engraver. Suddenly through the black clouds came a ray of light—our last mounting deadline complete. Briskly we worked to clear the decks of copy. We weathered the storm and headed towards port. Task done, voyage completed, we present the fresh rain washed ‘49 edition of the Centralian. Ye editor end his number ono assistent in the midst of big decisions. They swab the decks and rig the mast heads for every performance. These accomplished mechanics combined forces to produce such outstanding effects as the Pinafore setting . . . class play staging . . . and Homecoming. Then, there are the innumerable little missions these fellows carry out. that the rest of the ship’s mates often overlook. How about those early pre-advisory jam sessions emanatinq from the hold back-stage . . . those films, run off by one of the stalwart Sampson's of the Stage Crew for first aid, health, biology, chemistry, physics, botany, radio workshop, and the social science classes . . . their appreciated labors at movie assemblies. Every group that has ever given a stage presentation has deeply felt the aid, co-operation, and time contributed by the crew of their own free will. These deck hands are the ones who see that the P.A. system is ready for use. a job ably performed by Bob Pearson. Ronald Clabo was the boy behind the spotlight, who created those chromatic lighting effects. Yes, true to its colors, the stage crew has operated effectively under the management of Phil Opsal. Thus, the competent crewmen who man our radio room, with all its new seaworthy equipment, not only keep in touch with the mainland, but also inform the landlubbers of the activities which are carried on aboard ship. And one of our newest organizations is the debate squad. Winning honors here and there, and joining the National Forensic League, the squad is rapidly becoming one of the most publicized groups here aboard ship. RADIO WORKSHOP—Bottom Row: B. Johnson. G. It's the best team I ever coached! Of course, he was speaking of the pride and joy of the Good Ship Central, our basketball team: City Champs. District Champs. Region Champs, and Fourth in the State. The team, ably captained by Roger French and All-State Terry Byrnes, got off to a slow start; but after Buddy Blanchard left sick bay, they began to come fast and showed great improvement and great determination to win. Highlights of the season were Terry Byrnes' last second basket to win over South 40-39: the near-perfect game to beat Washburn 51-46: Carl Thomas' 16 points in the great comeback to beat Hibbing 37-34 and revenge an earlier defeat: and Buster Radebach's great defensive job in the Marshall game. The team coached by Bill Hawker and Captained by John Staum. had one of its heaviest schedules in history. The meets this year included two duals, three relay meets, with the recently added St. Thomas Annual Invitational Relay Meet providing new flavor. Last season the girls turned in a shooting average of five hundred per cent in the southern division. The cheerleaders put in their appearance at all the football games, and also followed the basketball team through the regular season into the State Tournament. Captained by Marie Hurtig. the cheerleaders put on a great performance and inspired the teams to many a victory. This year's football season saw the creation of a new group destined to arouse exuberant spirit aboard the Good Ship Central. The five girls pictured below, furnished the inspiration for the organization of the flagtwirlers. and proved by their pep and originality that athletic boosting is an art. From there on, fans held their breaths and wondered how far the team could go. To the amazement of many, they took region five championship and went on to win one game in the state contest. ALL ASHORE The anchor is down and the sails lie still as the Good Ship Central stops once more on her long voyage toward a better America to discharge a new graduating class—the class of 49. The seas have been rough at times, but we have weathered the storms and prepare now to embarlt on a new voyage on the turbulent sea of life. We may set our course with hearts courageous, for we hold in our minds the experiences of three years on the Good Ship Central, and in our hearts the memories of fun and hard work. In this atomic age Youth sails unchartered waters. The sailing in the Good Ship Central has not all been smooth, so it is with heartfelt gratitude that we render our appreciation to those who have smoothed the waters. Before closing this, the last page in the log of the '49 Centralian, appreciation must also be forwarded to the many who aided in the production of this annual: To the staff, which burned the midnight oil before deadlines. To Clarence E. Blume, who enabled us to have this book against compromising circumstances. To Miss Louise lies, who devoted many hours to the business staff: and to Miss Lulu Utley, who made certain our writers dotted their i's and crossed their t's. To Mr. Art Segal and Mrs. Robertson, of the Bureau of Engraving for their considerate aid and suggestions in many trying situations. To Mr. Leonard Lundgren and the entire staff of Lundgren Studios for their excellent work and thoughtful cooperation. To Mr. Lowell Dahlberg. of the Harrison-Smith Printing Company for his helpful assistance. To Andrew Miner for his endless efforts to obtain complete photo-coverage of school activities. To the Minneapolis Star and Tribune for the use of the picture which appears on the top of page sixty-nine. Last but not least, we dip our sails to each and everyone in the faculty and student body of Central for their co-operation and backing of this pictorial account of three wonderful years.
