The lirst undertaking was College Day on March 17. 1937, with members of the class cabinet serving as hosts and hostesses to the represeniatives from the various colleges. This day was devoted to stimulating interest in further education by providing an opportunity for stu- dents to confer with college representatives and to gain information concerning their schools. 'liwentv-eight colleges and vocational schools from Minnesota and neighboring states were represented. The Representative Centralites composed of Five girls and five boys were elected by the class early in the year. Maurine Morris, and Evangeline Boner rendered a hue performance. The success of the play was due in a large part to Miss Lorine Crosz, senior English teacher, who coached the players in a way that hrought out their hes! talents. The play was set in England. Lawrence Blake, played hy Don Carlson, had come hoine from India to find himself in love with Paddy, instead of Eileen, played hy Dolores Peterson. It hecornes more complicated lrecause Paddy is intensely loyal to Eileen. However, the play comes to a happy ending at the Close of the fourth act. l65l Out of the floors and windows of room 400 every sixth period the strains of sweet music used to meet our ears. Spring term officers were Cas- per Rudinger, president, and Annulmelle Lee. secretary. A yt A l The C.C.C. cabinet is the governing body of the C.C.C. This abbreviation, which stands for I'Courtesy, Consideration, and Cleanliness, is the motto which the cabinet has to maintain and hold up to the student body through its monitors. This is the only cabinet in school which is directly elected by the entire student body. It is composed of twelve representatives-four HA seniors, four By seniors, and one member each from the HBU and A-ii sophomore and B and A junior grades, who meet every second Wednesday, between lunches, in the Trophy Room. Here they receive and consider reports from the floor managers, discuss the problems of student government, principally the order being kept in the halls and lunchroom, the care of the school lawns, and they are willing, when called upon, to help in any capacity, to the best of their ability, promptly and efficiently. The president of the fall cabinet was Dick Sauve: of the spring cabinet, Casper Rudinger. Mary Phelps served as secretary, and Marcia Rehl as treasurer for both. Their success and efficiency in main- taining order in the halls and co-operation with the lunch rooni management in the prohlein of controlling twenty-three hundred students is indeed connnendahle. The clulr is under the juris- diction of the C.C.C. calminet, with Mr. Edward Krueger serving as its faculty adviser. ln every school year there are several campaigns for pat- ronage of some particular organization or publication. In the past year these campaigns. through the help of Miss Henry and her puhlic speaking classes, have gained much valuable co-operation. ln addition, the students gain considerable experi- ence in presenting a topic convincingly to an audience. Some of the campaigns that owed much of their success to this assist- ance were the school clothing drive, Hi-Y and Student Council Courtesy campaigns, News and Centralian suhscription drives. r - tn How would you like to be a library monitor? Are you an upper elassman with a scholarship a little above average? Are you particular about your appearance, and do you boys wear your ties and keep your shirlsleeves down? Have you the ability to say No to friends and enemies alike when the occasion arises? ll' so, you may be the one that Miss Thomas selects for the position. Vlrould you like to know your duties? Two people are chosen for each hour oi' the dayg if possible, one boy and one girl, making a total of twelve on the Library Board. You will stand at the door and exchange a white slip for the student's yellow one. After the white slip has been hlled out, you will distribute it to the designated study hall. Try your best to main- tain order at all times. Then you will be the perfect library monitor. 1721 To! FALL LIBRARY STAFF ll nl tail lln Top lOIl'.' 1 5' . L lil ding. llnrton. It has helped to create a spirit ol' friendliness among all the girls and it enables them to make lasting friendships which continue after they graduate. The club does not confine its memberships merely to upper-classrnen, but includes the sophomores, too. This is one ol' its advantages, as the new girls are given an opportunity to meet other girls right at the very beginning so that they will not be left outside of the many activities. As a result a Big Sister party is held each semester. The fall term's othcers were Mildred Sandberg, president, Beverly Murtaugh, vice-presidentg Grace Putnam, secretary, and Bernice Courtney, treasurer. Miss Thomas, assistant prin- cipal, has been our adviser for both spring and fall term. The officers elected this spring were Dolores J. In 1919 it adopted the name Le Foyer which signifies '5The Hearth. Its purpose is to promote interest in the French people, their customs and literature, among the students studying the French language. In addition to gaining a better understanding of France, club members enjoy the good fellowship and friendliness the club provides. Every year Le Foyer donates money to the Ida V. Probett Fund. The club is under the able leadership of Mrs. Alice F. Drechsler and Miss Margaret Holliday, faculty advisers. On the third Wednesday of every month, the meetings were held, and the programs con- sisted of French plays and songs, folk dances, and talks on European travels. Forming the letters C. H. S. and those of the opposing school was one of the many maneuvers performed by the band. Central is proud to be one of the few schools whose band not only plays but also marches at school functions. Much color was added to Centralis sports by the cheer leaders. Led by W'arren Hultgren and Bob Bunker, the cheering was among the best in the city. With several new yells and the old favorites, and led by intricate maneuvers of Warren and Bob, the student body was easily persuaded to yell its loudest. Eight different sports were taught to three hundred boys by this competent staff. Foot- ball and baseball were successfully tutored by .loe Markley, chiel' of the stall. Sportsmanship and good basketball teams have been the contribution of Weston Mitchell, dean of Centralis coaches. Versatile Ed Weber once again had successful scrub football, swimming, and tennis teams. Bill Hawker developed a track team which upheld Central's high standard. Coll' was well taken care of by Charles Addington. and Ross Peck was again faculty manager. One of Central's outstanding organizations for the past few years has been the C Club. The Cu Club is composed of boys who have won a letter in any sport at Central. Sponsoring the Bernard Bailey Memorial Basketball Tournament is one of the club's many and varied activities. Oflicers of this yearis organization were J0llll Strate, president: Lawrence Peterson, vice-president: and Dick Raiter, secretary and treasurer. ly t I r Starting the season with nine lettermen and many prospects, coaches Markley and Mitchell developed a team of high caliber. Although the team was fairly slow, it carried out its polished offensive plays in high class style. Starting slowly, the team put up a gallant fight for the championship against South. Being the only team to score on South all season adds much to the impres- sive record of four victories and three defeats. John Strate, an all-city man despite a slow start, was an inspiring player at the center position. Howard Donald, a guard or tackle, was a fine defensive player besides leading the plays on offense. Lawrence Peterson, the fullback, was the best passer in the city and a very good blocker. Bob Halverson, an alternate all-city tackle, was the main cog in Central's strong defensive line. Wallace DeShane, Central's quarterback, was the be t blocker in the city and a strong defensive player. sy f Wf 8,1 M - 1 l f. .. FOOTBALL SOUAD T011 run: Tliars. l'ollunrl. Now there are as many as sixteen teams competing, and there is always excitement for the players in this fast-moving game. This yearis game was a very close and upsetting one between the Whirl- winds and the Central Streaks. The Central Streaks were ex- pected to win, but the upset came when the Whirlwinds won by the narrow margin of 2 to l. Both teams showed remarkable teamwork, and with the outstanding work ol' Betty Marshall and Opal Gilbert, of Whirlwiricls, the game was the most excit- ing of the season, both for the observers and the players. At any rate, about sixty girls came out for speedball. The teams were soon eliminated down to the Ghosts and the Wvhipperettes. The final game was close, but was won by the Ghosts by a narrow margin. Speedball is played mostly by sophomore girls, although the junior and senior girls may also play on teams if they prefer. Ralph, MODERN DANCING Although the numlrer of' participants was not as great in skating in many of the other sports, the few that did turn out enjoyed the sport immensely. The activity was carried on at ponds in the different neighborhoods for the convenience of all the skaters. Some of the various ponds used were Powderhorn, Nicollet Field. Clinton. Chicago. and Loring. At each pond one or two girls recorded the names ol' the skaters. The lmasis of modern dancing is the movement. It has a very definite form hy utilizing time, space. and force in four patterns. People beginning the modern dance get a great deal of satisfaction out of the technique because of its vigorous move- ments, which include every part of the body. After an individual has gained a certain mastery in the technique. if any creative ideas are forthcoming, it is then that the actual composition of the dance begins. an A V1 aww 109 Q59 QMS Sew Qxcmxwf, - WN OWNCJ W SQ Sw, .
