VICTOR BERGQUIST The public schools of Minneapolis lost a great teacher of music this year in the death of I. Victor Bergquist. He was not only a fine teacher but gained a reputation as organist, choir director, and composer. We who have been in his classes realize fully the fine things he accomplished. He taught young people to express themselves frankly and freely in music. He inspired in his students an appreciation and understanding of music that was a part of his being and to his tireless efforts is due the success of the unique contests in Original Compositions which he established. We honor his memory and are proud of our participation in the activities he sponsored. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY REPRESENTATIVE CENTRALITES IANUARY '35 REPRESENTATIVE CENTRALITES, you are to be con- gratulated. In scholarship, in athletics, in almost every type of activity at Central, you represent the best we have to offer. Heading the list are the four class officers. Howard Taylor, senior class president, made Central's name known in state tennis circles by winning the State Doubles Championship in 1933. Marion Bennett, vice-president of the class, was presi- dent of Girls, Club and a Girls' Cn winner. Don Harley, as class treasurer, was a member of the Student Council and the Class Cabinet. Virginia Trepanier was a capable secretary for the Ianuary class and an active participant in all girls, activities at Central. In scholarship, Dorothy Whitney, valedic- torian, and Thomas Aldrich, salutatorian, were truly leaders. Dorothy played one of the leading roles in the class play, Thomas was on the business staff of the Ccntralian and in the class play cast. Bob Lundborg held the position of Editor-in- Chief of the News. Helen Lundborg was Bob's able assistant as School Editor of the News, and both were M. H. S. In the field of sports Central was well represented by Les Henninger, member of the foot- ball teams of '32, '33, and '34, and of the C Club. Hurley. ndf O make their class long remembered as one ofthe best ever graduated from Central was the purpose of the class of Ianuary 1935 when they elected Howard Taylor, Marion Ben- nett, Virginia Trepanier, and Don Harley as their leaders. The many achievements made by these officers in cooperation with the class cabinet, class advisers, and fellow-students proved to the class that they were not wrong in their choice. Homecom- ing Day, with the traditional Central vs. South football battle and the Alumni dance as its main events, was their first large project. The class party, whose theme was a Bowery Brawlf' and the class play, You and If followed in close succession in December. Commencement exercises were held on Ianu- ary 24 for 200 A Seniors, 32 of whom were members of the National Honor Society. All day in answer to the bells, The pupils throng the halls find crowd and shout and sigh or laugh Until the last bell calls, Until the last one leaves the school And evening silence falls. But in this school, this vast machine, This pushing, moving host, Each person lives a separate life, , Ind bulfeted and tossed Through halls, no personality May be submerged and lost. Each pupil seeks a different fate, And takes a diferent part. Some ind a place on football fields- Some find a place in art, Some in the depths of dusty books Find joy to fill their heart. But whether knowledge is his goal, Or math or poetry, Or music, or machines, or gym Each one will welcome be To find, himself, his fitting task And by his work be free. For through the pages in the News The writing in the Quest, The football games, the basketball, The clubs, and all the rest, Each person finds a chance to do The thing he likes the best. And still the schoolhouse silent stands That each, before he goes May find some help in living well The life that each one knows Is waiting for him when at last The doors behind him close. Almost every conceivable type of purely literary work of which Central students are capable is published in the Quest. Aspiring authors and poets are inspired and encouraged by its excellence and by the friendly spirit of competition which it engenders. During the fall semester Iohn Huseby was editor-in-chief of the Quest. He was assisted by two associate editors, Don Sanford and Betty Eaton. Eleanor Lovell aided in the capacity of literary editor. Corinne Schipper held the position of poetry editor, and Grace Bogema had charge of the exchange of our publication with those of other schools. Coralie Lathrop was art editor. The business manager, Iames Nelson, and the adver- tising manager, Allan Bjerke, did their best to make the pub- lication a success. ONTRIBUTIONS to special assembly programs, and bac- calaureate services formed a very important part of the Glee Club,s activities this year, but the production of the Gil- bert and Sullivan opera, '6Pirates of Penzancef' presented March 14, 15, undoubtedly marked its greatest achievement. Under the excellent direction of Sydney H. Morse, mem- bers of the cast displayed fine talent, and the production was praised by many music critics. The opera presented the plight of Frederic, apprenticed to a band of pirates who never harmed orphans. Frederic was about to marry his old nurse-maid, Ruth, the only Woman he had ever seen, when he met Mabel, one of the many daughters of General Stanley. Members of the pirate crew became attached to the General's other daughters, and after many dilli- cult and amusing situations they abandoned their piratical career, and all ends well. fs 70 71 ,N 515, ,I -, Lf X .av mw R EMBERS of the cast Whose poise, splendid character- izations and fine singing made uPirates of Penzancev an outstanding success were: RICHARD, A PIRATE CIIIEE - Henry Andrews SAINIUEL, H15 LIEUTENANT - - Darwin Iacobson FREDERIC, A PIRATE AIHPRENTIQLE - Vernon Swedberg MAJOR-GENERAL STANLEY - - - - - Charles Brearly EDXVARD, SERGEANT OF POLICE - - ---- Steven Koalogianes EVIABEL, fiENERAL STANLEYNS YOl'NGES'F DAUGHTER - Audrey Shorhund K.'X'fE - Shirley Steward - Ezra Danielson EDITII GENERAL ST,XNLEYiS DALGIITERS Dorolhv Sandahl Vv1.I'gI.7Zd.6Z H ard in ISA-XBEL - MfIl'f0l'l'6 Holland RUTII, A PIRATICAL MAID-oi:-ALL-WORK ---- Maxz'ne Fogel Chorus of General Stanley? Ten new members were added to the group, Hve new clarinets, a cymbal and a drum have helped to make a better balance of instruments, and Charles Wohlford, leader, is pleased with the fine cooperation he has received. In addition to the music furnished by the circulating library of the Board of Education, the band has been able to purchase two sets of march books this spring which, Mr. Wohlford believes, will prove very helpful in his work next year. Fifteen of the band's instruments are furnished by the school, while the rest are privately owned. Music for all our pep assemblies, football games and for one basketball game was furnished by the band, and they also sponsored a sunlite April 26, the profits of which were used for instrument repairs. 74 75 ONTINUING to function as it has in the past years, the Central orchestra still proves a valuable asset to the school on such occasions as Baccalaureate, commencements, and assemblies. Members of the orchestra shared honors with the glee club in their opera, The Pirates of Penzance, playing the accompaniment with splendid intonation and precision. Sidney H. Morse, director, believes that the orchestra's tonal balance improved greatly during the spring semester with the addition of six violas, three flutes, an oboe and a French horn. The viola section now numbers ten for the first time in the history of the orchestra. Fifty-five talented and enthusiastic musicians under their capable and versatile leader, Mr. Morse, helped to make our orchestra this year an organization of which every Centralite was justly proud. The purpose in View at the time of organization was the man- agement of all general student activities by the council. The first council contained 24 members, and the number has since been reduced to 12. During 1934-35 the members were the four Aw senior class ollicers, two HB senior representatives, the presidents of the G. A.A., HC club, Girl Reserves, Girls, Club, Hi-Y, and the editor-in-chief of the Ncvw, who repre- sented school publications. The clubs having members on the council are the largest in the school and therefore better repre- sent the student body. T6 If HE C. C. C. Cabinet is the governing body of the C. C. C. It consists of twelve representatives who meet every Thursday between lunch periods to discuss student govern- ment problems, receive reports from floor managers, and formulate plans for increasing the eliiciency of the organiza- tion. Rules of the school were published by the Fall and Spring cabinets and distributed in the 'ABU sophomore ad- visories. In order to raise money the C.C.C. Cabinet spon- sored a 'Turkey I-Iopu sunlite on November 28. Don Knight served as president for both the Fall and Spring cabinetsg Mathilda Vandenbergh was secretary and Betty Bullis treas- urer of the Fall cabinetg and Dorothy McWilliams and Ray Kurzeka were secretary and treasurer for the Spring Cabinet. This year passes were given to students only when they presented a statement, signed by their teacher, of the Work they were to do. Students who Were found in the library, but were not using library material forfeited the library privileges indefinitely. Books could be taken out only before or after school. 80 81 INCE its organization at Central high school in 1912, the Girls' Club has grown into one of the most active clubs. The Faculty-Mothers' Tea and the Big Sister party have become traditional semi-annual events. The latter project was undertaken to arouse the interest of the new girls at Central in the school activities. When the Girls' Cluh was first organ- ized, it was called the G. E. S., signifying Growth, Education, and Service, and its purpose has remained to develop the highest standard of womanhood, to promote a spirit of coop- eration and fellowship, to encourage education through service to the school, and to stimulate growth of school activities. The club contributes to the Ida V. Probett fund, the Community Fund, and helps with many school projects. Any girl who wishes to join is welcome. CHOOL savings was introduced by the Farmers and Me- chanics Savings Bank in 1908, to stimulate and encourage thrift habits. Central was among the first schools to adopt the new idea, and has developed a very capable system of weekly banking. Each advisory group chooses a cashier, and from this group of cashiers a Board of Directors is elected. The board is composed of two seniors, two juniors, two A sopho- mores, and two members-at-large. A president, a vice-presi- dent, and a secretary are chosen by the board, and any vacan- cies are filled by appointments made by the remaining board members. Meetings are conducted once a month to discuss improvements in efficiency and promotion of banking. A meeting of all cashiers is called when important questions are considered. Mrs. Goode is faculty adviser. 82 83 HE C. C. C. force of monitors is a student group which aids in maintaining order in the school building. The duties of the monitors are to keep order in the halls, to allow no rowdyism, and to report all mischief to the faculty adviser. A new system has been tried out this term by which each monitor takes three minutes at the beginning of each period to inspect the lockers in his halls and to report all which are unlocked. Through this it is hoped that the number of thefts of books and other articles will be reduced. In the lunch room also, these special monitors see that the lunch room tables are kept clean and that the room is left by the students in the same order as they found it. Members of the club had com- plete charge of the patriotic assembly on February 21 which included a scene from Drinkwater's Abraham Lincolnf, On April 4 two plays, '4Lady Ann, and uStep Hen-Be Roosterf, were very successfully presented at a matinee, and another such entertainment was given later in the spring term. Talented members of the club often respond to requests for readings at various entertainments, and in all their activi- ties Mimes and Mummers members show the results of the line direction of the club faculty adviser, Miss Lorine Grosz. S-l 85 T the meetings of the Botany Club, which were held every second and fourth Wednesday of the month under the direction of Miss Edlund and Miss Groth, topics on interesting plant life were given by the members to further acquaint Botany students with nature and increase their inter- est in Botany. Officers elected for the Spring term were Mar- guerite Lundquist, president, Miriam McIntyre, vice-president, Gertrude Iohnson, secretary, Iean Glenn, treasurer, and Mary Hartwell, sergeant-at-arms. The Hi-Y Club during the past year, has been functioning entirely by chapters. Service projects worked on by the chap- ters included the building of a score board for the athletic field, and contributing sums of money for the fund. The club as a whole assisted with the annual clothing drive and the toy collection at Christmas. At present there are six chapters: Linx, Pioneers, Morpheus-Phi-Delphus, Abba Dabba Wu, Sigma Chi, and Kappa Kappa. lfoimrl Row: 'l'1i1q, 11711115 Pr!- wfafz, Hnbar, I'm'lgef', RI'glIf7'0, Mills, Wenger, Carver. HE French Club was organized for the purpose of aid- ing the students of the French language in their under- standing of the customs and people of France. The French Club also aims to give to its members a thoroughly active interest in world affairs and an understanding of international problems. These are the aims which it seeks to carry out in its programs, as Well. The programs usually are made up of num- bers such as readings and songs in French. At one meeting, Mrs. O'Brien spoke about her trip to Europe, especially telling about her visit in France. The ollicers are lohn Bradstock, president, Elaine Murphy, vice-presidentg Betty Lu Schoening, secretary, and Ruth Ladd, treasurer. The faculty advisers are Miss Margaret Holliday and Mrs. Alice Drechsler. 86 87 MBRYO artists are given an opportunity to express their talents in the Skylite Club. Candidates for membership must submit three pieces of original work which meet the approval of the oflicers and Miss Witter, club adviser. Highlight meetings of this year were characterized by Fall and Spring Art Shows, sketching trips, and masque making. The club sponsored a homecoming assembly in which these masques were used. Art appreciation meetings and parties at which art games were played were also features of interest. The Scribblers' Forum is Central's literary club and students showing talent in creative Writing are eligible for membership. This year all material worked on in the Forum was collected into a Memory Book which also contained short biographical sketches of club members. Prominent people of literary circles spoke at the club's meetings, and manuscripts Written by Forum members were read and criticized. Since 1933 the club has been divided into two groups, the Blue Triangle for senior and HA junior girls, and the Silver Tri- angle for sophomore and HB junior girls. The two Triangles hold separate meetings but their activities are similar. Each holds a Recognition Service for new members, and both clubs contribute to and participate in all Y. W. C. A. activities. The Girl Reserves have a code which they endeavor to live up to in their daily life, and the purpose of their club is to create good fellowship and democratic relationships among Central girls. MITCHELL MR. WEBER MR. HAWKER CENTRAL,S COACHES MORE and more is the importance of the Physical Edu- cation Department becoming recognized as athletics form a vital part in school life. Some two-hundred boys receive instructions in eight different sports throughout the school year, under the guidance of a very talented and com- petent staff. The department is headed by Ioseph Markley, now com- pleting his eleventh year of outstanding service at Central. His football teams have always been of the highest order and have reflected his excellent coaching. He has come through with five titles under the Red and Blue standard. Dean of Central coaches is Weston W. Mitchell who has been connected with athletics at Central for the past two decades. His basketball teams have always brought much credit to Central, not only by their playing ability, but, also, by their sportsmanlike conduct. Probably the most versatile member of the staff is Edmund Weber. He is scrub football, swimming, tennis, and assistant baseball coach. Under his guidance many lads have risen to stardom on the gridiron. Since he first assumed control of tennis and swimming at Central, his teams have placed in top rank positions every time. The track team has long been under the management of William Hawker, who, until this year has had the momentous task of turning out representative squads year after year by himself. This season he is being assisted by Arthur Pelto, a recent addition to the Central faculty. Both men were Stars in their college days. Although handicapped by lack of material, Charles Ad- dington has been able to produce golf teams that have always maintained the Central standard. A word of praise is also due Ross Peck for his skillful execution of the office of faculty manager of athletics. SHOWING a varied offense, the Central Gridders opened the 1934 season with a 27 to 7 victory over an inexperienced Roosevelt eleven at the Teddies' gridiron. The Markleymen showed great power in this initial encounter. In the second tilt of the season, the Red and Blue crew met and defeated their traditional foe, West, on a 13 to 0 count. Two blocked punts led to both of Centralls touchdowns. Next the gridders journeyed to the Washburn field where they overwhelmed the Millers 12 to 0. The Pioneers struck early and rang up their First tally in the opening three minutes of play. Edison was the next victim of the speedy Central aggrega- tion. As they fell before a 25 to O onslaught, Bob Meade cele- brated with several long runs his return to the line-up after being out with an injury. 96 W .,, , s' if i gmitzff 5 .M 1 Q H23 A 'E ' L L- CENTRAIJS next opponent was the strong North team. The Markleymen dampened the Polars' Homecoming celebration by trouncing them 33 to 14. The Pioneers continued their winning ways, as they next defeated the 133 champions, Marshall, by a 25 to 6 count. Led by Captain Ray Strate, the Central team played its best game of the year, and gave an exhibition of almost perfect football. Unable to offset a tremendous advantage in weight, the Pioneers were forced to relinquish all claim to the grid title to South, as they found themselves on the short end of a 13 to 6 score. This championship game served as a climax for Central's 1934 Homecoming celebration. Although they stepped into an early lead, the Markleymen were unable to withstand the terrific onslaught of the Tigers and fell before two touchdown drives in the second quarter. ITH a nucleus of seven lettermen around which to mould their 1934 football machine, coaches Ioseph Mark- ley and Weston Mitchell pro- duced a team which ended the season in second place with six victories and one defeat. A fair idea of the squad's power can be obtained from the statistics of the season which placed Cen- tral first in scoring with a total of 141 points in a tie for top honors in defensive play by allowing the opposition only 40 points in the seven game schedule. Another phase of the game in which the Pioneers excelled was blocking. They executed their assignments in this im- portant department in such a manner as to bring unlimited praise to themselves and their coaches. The stars of the season were, Captain Ray Strate, acclaimed the outstanding gridder in the league, Bob Meade, Don Un- derwood, Arnold Iohnson, Bill Small, and Henry McNamee. 1 2 NCE again Coach Weston Mitchell produced a speedy cage squad. This year he was hampered by a lack of veteran material, and had to work mostly with Sophomores. In spite of a late start the Red and Blue warriors hung up an irn- pressive record of three Wins and four losses. Led by Cap- tain Ray Strate, who was unan- imous choice for an all-city berth, the quintet became feared by all opponents. The squad made up for its lack of size by superior speed. Another thing that became evi- dent as the schedule wore on, was the rapidity with which the team ironed out early-sea- son ruggedness. At the end of the year the squad possessed a smooth floor game that is typi- cal of all Mitchell creations. Beside Strate, outstanding men on the squad Were, Dick Raiter, Lawrence Peterson, Rod Loft, Don Underwood, and Iohn Strate. 5 Srcoxn Row: ,'l!a,coI1'gi1:r, Pflcr- orz, L,, Bzzclgeridge, Diana Gro 11 o, Dc5hzme. HIS year baseball appeared on the athletic roster for the first time in six years, as the faculty decided to yield to the pleas of the students and return the popular sport to Central. With only two Weeks of actual practice before the season, Coach Ioe Markley was confronted with the moment- ous task of trimming a list of 106 candidates down to a squad of 22. Although hampered by poor weather, the mentor was able to put a very representative team on the field in time to Win the initial start of the season against Edison. UCH of the reason for popularity of athletics is the color', which surrounds it, and much of this Hcolorw is provided by cheer leaders who go through intricate manuevers in an attempt to bring the students into frenzy. This year's crew of cheer leaders, made up of Lewis Kravetz, George Kenney, and Henry Andrews, was an especially peppy team. The Boys' ACN Club has long been one of the outstanding organizations at Central. It is made up of boys who have won their letters in any sport. The club is sponsor of the annual All Nations Tournament, renamed the Bernard Bailey Me- morial Tournament, in honor of the athlete who died last spring. Officers of this spring's administration were Ray Strate, president, Arnold Iohnson, vice-president, Don Underwood, secretary, and Manley Hanson, treasurer. 104 NEVV system of awarding em- blems was put into effect this year by the Girls' Athletic Association. This change was due to the expense of awarding such a large number of em- blems. The requirements for an all-city emblem now includes 1,150 points in athletics and a HB0 average in studies. To obtain a chenille NCQ, a girl must earn 1,000 points in sports and have a scholastic average of at least Cf, Srcovn Row: Alzerzz, Olsnu, lime'- nrr, Pcnlbcrlmz, Rudbcfg, La- l'ir1'gz'. Eight five-mile hikes were conducted. Each hiker had to par- ticipate in eight hikes to receive 100 points or five hikes in order to get 50 points. Every girl hiker signed up before the hike and checked in when she came hack. The first season of girls' skating was very successful in spite of the brevity of the winter weather. The sport was conducted at Powderhorn Park and Bryant Square throughout the Christ- mas vacation and as long thereafter as the rinks were open. The girl in charge of the sport was Dorothy Kielty. She appointed certain days upon which the girls who were inter- ested reported. Points were given for a minimum of eight prac- tices, Hve points for each practice. A total of hfteen girls earned points this year in skating. 106 107 LTHOUGH a comparatively new sport at Central, speed- ball, through a tournament, provided interest not only for the girls who participated, but also for their classmates who Watched the progressive wins. This sport, which is a combina- tion of football and soccer, had an excellent turn-out of par- ticipants, with a total of seventy-five girls signing up. The championship game between the Smoothies and Centralites was very exciting, especially since the Winning point was made in the last one-half minute of play. The game finally ending 3 to 2, in favor of the Smoothies. Getting up with the sun and playing under adverse weather conditions, approximately forty-three girls received points in field hockey this year. The tournament was Won by the Chain Gang which displayed its superiority over all rival teams. Ida Rand was captain of the victors. Txmn Row: Tumrr, B 0 w r r 1, Cloanan, Rehl. The championship clash between the Chain Gang and Squadron B was very exciting, especially since each had received but one setback, and that at the hands of the other. The game finally ended 17 to l2, favor of the Chain Gang. Approximately sixty girls received points in beginning basketball. The champions were the Smoothies, captained by Marcia Rehl. Volleyball was the most popular sport played this year. Twenty teams were formed. This year the teams were divided into two leagues. The Chain Gang was victorious in League I and the Smoothies were champions in League Il. In order to decide the winning team in volleyball, the above teams met in a nip and tuck game which ended 35-10 for the Chain Gang. 108 l09 VERY year since tennis was first introduced at Central, it has been extremely popular with the girls. The doubles and singles tournaments are run off both in spring and fall. The contest in the singles tourney narrowed down to three outstanding players: Avis Russ, Ethel Kerns, and Helen Lund- borg. Ethel Kerns was defeated hy Helen Lundborg, who in turn lost to Avis Russ. In the doubles tournament, Sara White, pairing with Genevieve Swanson, took championship honors from Helen Lundborg and Avis Russ, in games that ended 7-5 and 9-7. There were many excellent players and the matches were closely contested in last springas deck tennis tournament. Twelve girls received l00 and 50 points respectively. Avis Russ and Katherine Magnuson won the final game. Their rival players were Mildred Bittner and Ruth Iohnson. The score was 6-0 and 6-l.
