( 9 ] Calvin W. Jarvis To the Graduating Classes of 1929: My dear young friends: MOST of you entered Central three years ago. 1 became principal at that time so that you of the June class represent the first class to pass its entire career under my administration. It is for this reason that I feel an especial interest in you. We have spent these years together with one common purpose—that you as individuals might gain the benefits of those school experiences which arc believed to be essential to all youth in the preparation for adult life. Now we, faculty and undergraduates, say farewell to you with the earnest hope that the high ideals for which true Ccntralites stand will be guiding forces in vour lives, and that every one of you may achieve happiness in useful careers. I desire always to be, Your friend, Principal. Joan Dorr O’Brien STUDENTS of Central High School may well consider themselves fortunate in having so capable a woman, one who so well understands young people, and who is so interested in them, as Mrs. Joan O’Brien to guide and direct them along a rhythmic path. Mrs. O’Brien's guidance in the role of student counselor reaches out into the realm of actual life and will have lasting effect upon the lives of the students to which it is extended. She has been responsible for bringing out the best in many of Central’s students. Her ability to understand their needs has established a lasting remembrance and appreciation. Before Mrs. O’Brien came to Central eleven years ago. she was a teacher at the Harriet Grade School. For many years before becoming student counselor at Central she performed the duties of home visitor in efficient manner. As student counselor she teaches students the importance of planning in high school for the vocations which they are to follow in after life, assisting them, by providing material for study and by counsel, in the determination of what these vocations are to be. Without Mrs. O’Brien’s keen interest, many students would lack this most necessary preparation for the future. Korista, Evans, Hutchinson, Groth, Turnquist, Grosz Nutter, Geyijie. My dear Classmates: OUR voyage into life has just begun. We are now about to leave the small brig which takes us from shore and to embark upon a much bigger boat—that will take us into different ports of life. The training we have received to prepare us for this most eventful voyage is the result of the untiring patience of both our parents and our teachers. We can never repay them fully for what they have done for us. but we can show our appreciation by doing our very best to live up to their expectation of us. Since many of us will disembark into widely separated ports, we can never again hope to be united in one happy group. However, let us always keep the many beautiful friendships which we have formed in our school career. With loyalty to each other and pride in ourselves, let us forever be striving to reach the height of honor and to manifest true, clean lives. Sincerely, Your President, Ray Burge. M. S. Pinafore, was presented by the Glee Club under direction of Sydney H. Morse on the evenings of November 17 and 18 in the school auditorium. The opera concerns the love of Ralph Rackstraw, a bumble top-band, for Josephine, the captain’s daughter. Sir Joseph Porter is also seeking her hand. To escape Sir Joseph’s suit, Josephine plans to elope with Rackstraw, but Dick Dead-eye, having overheard their plans, discloses them to her father and Raekstraw is put in chains. At this point Buttercup comes forward with the confession that she had mixed the Captain and Rackstraw in birth, ami that Ralph is the First Lord of the Admiralty. The lovers are happily reunited and Sir Joseph finds consolation in his cousin Ilehc. The well remembered songs, “I’m Called Little Buttercup,’’ “He Is an Englishman,” were well done, as well as the more beautiful airs, “Refrain Audacious Tar, and “The Nightingales’ Song. Much credit goes to Mr. Morse as well as the members of the club for the success of the performances. A Scene iom The Weasel” COMEDY CONCERT THERE is. perhaps, no event in Central High School that causes more excitement and enthusiasm than the Comedy Concert, which is given annually by the students and faculty to provide for the school athletic Held fund. On Thursday and Friday evenings, April 18 and 19, the sixth annual concert was presented in seven acts to one of the largest audiences ever assembled in the school auditorium. The program opened with an overture by the orchestra directed by Sydney II. Morse, who was dressed like an old time master musician. Following this with mysterious shadows, weird sounds, grotesque masks, and dancing girls, the Skvlitc Club offered a scene from Chinatown. Lawrence Woods as master of ceremonies presented his “Blue Revue, consisting of dancing, singing, and musical numbers. ‘‘Who shoots? And indeed even the author did not know who was to shoot when four guns pointed criss-cross at one another in the satirical burlesque, The Rot Boiler, given by the Footlights Club. “Musical Moments, featuring a Victor Herbert program in the study of a girls' school, was the unusual act offered by the Girls’ Club. The Girls’ Athletic Association offered an act made up of dancing numbers. The production was under the capable direction of Miss I.orine Grosz. The play concerns a bachelor named Ambrose Applejack, who, believing that the monotony of life is aging him, decides to go out in search of love and adventure. To stimulate interest in the sale of Ambrose’s ancestral home, the high-powered real estate salesman makes up a tale of a pirate treasure being hidden in the house. A group of crooks become interested in the house because of the treasure. Anna Valeska, a lady crook, comes seeking Ambrose’s protection, supposedly from a Bolshevist spy, Ivan Barolsky, who really is her husband. After various adventures and a dream in which he imagines himself as his pirate ancestor, Ambrose finds the real parchment which tells of his pirate ancestor. Captain Applejack, and the hiding place of the treasure. Ambrose finds his adventure at home and falls in love with his ward. Poppy Fairc. The play was an artistic and dramatic success. The parts were well portrayed and the entire production reflected credit to the coach. Miss Grosz. NiCM, Venter, Or field, lutein. May 23 and 24, by the June class under the direction of Miss I.orinc Grosz. Complications arise in the school when the class president, Elisc, falls in love with the principal, Austin Bevans. Since Elisc falls in love with him Austin has to give up the school because of a promise to her uncle that no girl was to fall in love with him. She redeems herself and wins his love through her delicate charm. Every member of the cast was well suited to his part and there was not a discordant note in the production. Grapp, William , Swanson. It is the lighting spirit of the Red and Blue that has carried Central to victory and this spirit can justly he attributed to Coach Marklcy. He has built up teams from unexperienced material and has developed them into winning aggregations. Joe Mark ley W. W. Mitchell again put a championship basketball team on the floor this year making a record of four championship teams in 11 years of coaching at Central. “Mitch” turns the hard routine of training into pleasure and is a personal friend of all the boys on the team. It is his fine spirit that has carried the team through the season undefeated. “Mitch” is an assistant coach in football. Westox W. Mitchell Edmond G. Weber has been on the coaching staff of Centrul for the last two years. One of Mr. Weber’s contributions to the school is the individual attention lie gives to the freshmen in football. He is also head hockey and baseball coach, a position which he has ably handled since lie took over the reins two years ago. Edmond G. Coach Joe Markley found that lie had eight lettermcn back, of which three were regulars, for the nucleus of his team. The lettermen were Captain Burge, Wells, Runyon, Walling, Tengler, Palm-crstcin, Johnson, and Patten. With this material he built another formidable team, but because of the ineligibility of two players Central forfeited the first four games played, of which three were won and one tied. The season marked the first under Coach Markley’s tutelage in which Central failed to achieve at least a tie for the city championship and saw Central’s string of games without defeat ended at 33. With Captain Runyon and Wells his only veterans, “Mitch” formed a team with Stokes, Martin. Nelson, Roscoe, and Taylor. That it was unable to enter the State Meet for further laurels was the only disappointment the team had. City basketball critics declared that the Central five was the most evenly balanced team ever formed in the city. The quintet scored 320 points against 205 for their opponents. The second South game, played at the Kenwood Armory, was the big game of the year. Central won by outscoring the Tigers, 4 to 1, in an overtime period. ON THE ROAD TO CENTRAL HIGH By athletic field and carline looking lazy at the street. There’s a grand old school a waitin' that the others cannot heat; And the wind reaves past old Glory, and the passing hell doth cry: Come you hack, you moth-worn graduate; come you hack to Central High. Come you hack to Central High Where the football heroes vie, IV here the mini mums and civics Make the pleasant hours roll by. Come you hack to Central High IVhere the marks are all “A's high, Where commencement came like lightning Bringing tears unto the eye. Drive me somewhere north of Bryant where the worst is like the best, IVhere the teachers are all easy, and a man can loaf and rest; For the chorus class is singing, and ’tis there that 1 would fly To the hack row in assembly, in my fond old Central High. Come you hack to Central High IVhere with rules xve all comply. Where the classes ne'er are horesome. Nor lessons bring a sigh. Come you hack to Central High; Sing our motto to the sky No more see Home and perish, But see our old school and die! —Ruth Olsen, '• {).
