CENTRAL me ug. CHARGERS a. Central High School 1987 2155 Napier Avenue Macon, Georgia 31204 Volume XVII his year at Central is - different, challeng- ing, and ap‘‘peel- ing’. Central is different from all other schools be- cause we have variety. A va- riety of students, that is, all working together to make a great school. Maybe that’s why we are sole possessors of the year’s Best Sports- manship Award presented annually by the Macon Ex- change Club. Challenging. Well, this year at Central challenges students in several ways. Having more students than ever before tests the pa- tience of everyone. Another is the constant battle to keep up grades; this is something that always is on our minds. Finally, there is a new challenge at Central. The newly formed Spirit Committee invites every- one to “Get that Charger Spirit!’’. The students re- spond with higher atten- dance at school games. With all of these things comes the ap ‘peel”’. Stu- dents at Central create an inviting atmosphere that’s hard to resist. Take a peel of the Orange — you'll find us most ap ‘‘peeling’”’. Gathering around and having fun is just part of our ap’’peel’’. Taking a lunchtime break, the senior porch group enjoys its extra time. x Stn aka S a : 1) aane ale iy) Wer ” AP’ PEEL” A. Opening 18 Sports _48 Organizations _96 Classes 17% Faculty a ae of the orange Crowdedness in the lunchroom makes for close communion. Carl Dudley, Antonece Spear and William Barron seem to be enjoying themselves. Tony Howard debates fighting the hall-mania or waiting until the crowd clears, as Faith Griffin looks on. Between classes, all that one sees is a sea of bodies, all trying to get to different places at the same time. The early-moming crew monkeys around as they crowd on the steps before school, procrastinating the start of class. A FULL HOUSE There are more students than ever at Central Oo you ever get that D feeling that you're glued to the floor? Well, here in the halls of Central, many of us feel that way each day. The halls are overcrowded, and that is a problem that all students must deal with. A senior, Shannon Creamer, complains, ‘Sometimes I’m late for class after hav- ing to squeeze through the halls.’ Pam Peacock adds, “People stop and socialize _ in the halls, and it’s always right in front of you!”’ As we try to manipulate our way through the halls, it seems as though we're in 1 there are more smiling faces to greet us in the halls.” a sardine can. Every year, it gets worse — and that’s not hard to believe, be- cause every year, we have more students. What can be done about this problem? One student, Joanie Lar- sen, suggests, “Build an- other school”. Well, until we build another school or building we just have to grin and bear it. There is one advantage to this whole mess; there are more smiling faces to greet us in the halls. Ce his year has definite- ‘ ly been one for im- proving the school spirit. Everyone has tried to support the school spirit as well as the school and try- ing to keep positive atti- tudes. However, the re- sponsibility for school spirit was definitely a job the stu- dents had to undertake. “It all depends on the people (as to whether or not the school spirit im- proves)’’, Says senior Carla Hardy. “It's improving,” says Ms. “Kris’’ Stenbridge attempts to get a student to buy a spirit item. CHARGER SPIRIT Donna Strickland, “It’s bet- ter than it used to be!’’ Lisa Emilio agrees, “‘I think everybody has tried to make this year better. Ev- eryone was getting excited about the activities the school was having.”’ Over the summer, teach- er’s formed a spirit commit- tee at the request of Mr. Bell. During the first quarter students were invited to participate. Says one member, An- drea Carter, “School spirit makes a school. Everyone needs a positive attitude. The student body, working together, only improves the chance for a school’s sports teams to be successful. ”’ Central’s school spirit definitely needed a lift. To- gether, we proved that stu- dents and faculty working together can accomplish al- most anything. Take heed of our new Charger spirit — you’re sure to find it ap ’peeling”’. Bringing the lunchroom crowd to its feet, Daryl Pearson demonstrates why he’s this year’s winner of Spirit Week's Pee Wee Herman contest. Filling up the stands is what these Chargers are talking about as they cheer to the fight song. Mrs. Espy and Irvon Mahone jam to ‘That Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll’ during a pep rally. Wayne Evans, Glenn Casto, Tim Kite, Mitzi Hooks, Tonya Travis, Rader Seller, Sonya Travis and Michelle Horton all show their Charger Spirit as they wear their favorite jerseys on Jean and Jersey Day. AND THE ctober 3, 1986 is a bright moment in the hazy high O school memories of Erika Hart and Ned Henry, who were crowned Miss and Mr. Central Homecom- ing night. The Week began with excited students dressed in jeans and jerseys. Yes, Central's Homecoming was only a few days away and Spirit Week was underway. The tension built all week as Central anxiously awaited the Hephzibah game when the new Mr. and Miss Central would be crowned. At halftime the nervous candidates strolled out on the field finally to hear the big news. The moment had come and the air was bubbling with anticipa- tion. After what seemed forever, the names were an- nounced. ‘And the winners are ’ Erika Hart, Miss Central and Ned Henry, Mr. Central. Chris Dunn claimed first runners up with Shirley Randall and Keith Hamilton as second runners up, Katrina Jordan and Ricky Harris third runners up, and Kaye Tutt and David Robinson as fourth runners up. During a special pregame show the Freshmen Michael Higley, and Tasha Simmons, Sophomores Tony Jones and Paula Brison, and Juniors Anna Shockley and Natalie Colvard were presented on car floats. These classes showed their spirit by decorating their cars. Following the game, a Homecoming Dance was held in honor of the candidates, ending a special, fun-filled week at Central. Homecoming ‘86 will be a momentous occassion forever in students’ memories as they reflect upon the good times. “LINE-UP” The everlasting wait ll of us have had to As in line at one time or another. If it isn’t the late line, it’s the lunch line. Exactly what does one do while he stands in line? Well, Nikki Dennard says, “I just go through the line saying, ‘Seniors coming through!’”’ Most of us just hang around and talk to whomever hap- pens to be standing next to us. In the lunchline, the main topic of conversation is the food, of course. It doesn’t matter who you are stand- ing beside in the line, be- cause you know that you have something in com- mon; you are both starving! Most conversation in the lunchroom takes place in the line anyway, because once you sit down, you have to ‘‘wolf’ your food so you won't be late to class. Perhaps the worst one is the line of cars waiting to leave the parking lot. Not only are you ready to get home, but sitting in that hot car makes you even more irritated. Remember one thing while you stand in your next line; make the best of it by simply having a conversa- tion with the person, whom- ever it might be, standing beside you. Ed Harrel escapes the salad bar line as he pays for his lunch. Does this look familiar? These students, running a bit behind, anxiously wait for Mr. Guy to sign them in. Waiting in line for the bus can be a pretty boring moment, but these students appear to be making the most of it. LOCKERS, etc. — 18 — 5, or was it 18 — 4— ee Sound familiar? Well, it has happened to the best of us, and lockers are a part of everyday student life, to say the least. The average student probably visits his or her locker three to five times a day; this includes the necessary before and after school trips. Some of us go out of the “‘ordi- nary plain ole locker’’ syndrome and decorate it with pictures and whatnot. Two seniors, Cele Logan and Kim Poland, share a com- ment. “We hung a wipe-off note- pad on the door and exchange notes during the day.”’ Don't forget the well-known dirty locker. At one time during the school year comes the chore of cleaning the pigpen: endless sheets of paper, maybe a shi rt or jacket; or even a pair of socks, a rotten apple, and ... Look, here’s my algebra homework! | got a zero for not turning it in last quarter — | knew | did it! It's your locker, clean, filthy, fan- cy, or plain; but you'll always for- get your locker combination over spring break! Even our lockers have ap’’peel”’. Take a look at Alesa Richard's locker and you'll agree. Mark Brannem takes a peek at what's for lunch as he grabs a tray. Derrick Maddox is definitely in fashion with his lariat Standard equipment at Central this year has been ‘Reebok’ shoes, socks, T-shirts warmups, etc. Many faces peering from Tamika Foster's shirt seems to leave Chris Pennyman perplexed. April Carroll reveals her ap’peel”’ with her spiked, gelled and blonded hairdo. op oe TO THE EYE new wave is sweeping across this nation. We all Aw what that new wave is, Max Headroom. He dominates the commercials we watch on T.V., and the billboards that dot our highways. Espadrilles are seen on just about everyone’s feet. On the male scene, Sebagos (or pseudo-Sebagos) are a defi- nite must; they are worn without socks, of course! What are people wearing? That’s simple; Forenza! It doesn't matter if it’s shorts, shirts, or pants, just as long as they are Forenza. Jams are another hot item on the cloth- ing list. This summer they showed up in various different lengths. binges length was just below the knees. Es- prit is still . The colors this fall are even brighter and wilder than iaione. For the guys, faded and ripped blue jeans are hot. You can even purchase these jeans pre-tom or pre-faded; if you prefer the stonewashed look, well, they're available also. Come on, guys, get that sloppy look. As for jewelry, Swatches can still be seen on the majority of people's wrists. More and more people are wearing fishing weights as bracelets and ankelets. ‘Friendship’ bracelets are showing up in several varieties of styles and colors. If all these things sound foreign to you, get with it, but remember, you can never go wrong with a T-shirt and an old pair of Levis. The “silky look’ is well displayed by Valencia Lawrence with her over-sized earrings completing this ap’ ‘peeling’ look. Russell Johnson, Vernon Collins and Tony Thorpe show off their ap’ peel” with crewcut, flat-top and shaved design. GROWING PAINS art Teenage years appear most painful s time passes and Av: reflect upon our high school years, we smile and remember all of our good times. But as with anything else, we never stay the same. In our forty years at Central High School, we watch friends grow and friend- ships change; some become stronger while others simply fall apart. Sometimes we change so much that, at moments, we forget who we really are. So many things happen to us we wonder if we’re growing up too fast — or maybe if we're growing up at all. It's so hard for us be- cause we don’t know just how to act. Our parents want to coddle us, pro- tecting their children for- ever, but we’re dying to jump out on our own, standing on our own two feet and independent. Sometimes we wonder if there will ever be a day without the typical par- ent-teenage argument. We feel alone and de- pressed considering how much our parents care. Then, we all have our moments when we could just kill our best friends, or maybe even our boy- friend girlfriend. The pain can seem Over- whelming. We hate our friends for hurting us and our loved ones for be- traying our trust. Let’s not for- get about school. The Striving for good grades, making a cer- tain team, or pleasing our parents’ with achievements can be so frus- trating that we stop and think, ‘‘What’s life really all about?”’ When our years are completed and high school times are gone, we look back smiling re- alizing our pain is all about of growing up. Shawna Clendening and Sarah Hiscox prepare for fourth period’s quiz du ring their lunch break. Reviewing for 5th period’s quiz, Shawna Clendening and Sarah Hiscox compare notes. ——— Angela Eaton and Raymond Davis will remember CHS fondly for the friendships shared. Growing pains can be physical as well as mental; just ask Kacy McCrary, she knows as she receives some pep talk from Chris Dunn and Johnny Burrel before Physics class. Kimberly Randall, April Woolfolk, and Mia Andrews take some time to chat. BEHIND THE WHEEL = Chuck Isenburg and Chris Strain stroll through the parking lot. One can't help but notice Paul Knight's car, as he found a way to personalize his Beetle. Students take responsibilities of driving o drive or not to T sive: that is the question most teen- agers ask their parents when school begins. Driv- ing and having an automo- bile is a ‘“‘must’’ for most students at Central. This year the most popular auto- mobiles are Mustangs, Jeeps, trucks, and many dif- ferent small cars. Derick Maddox's car is quite odd. He owns a little red Subaru. Looking at the outside of his car it’s just another car, but it’s quite different when you look inside. The whole interior consists of rubber skulls and fake cobwebs. He says, ‘There’s no other car at Central that’s as unique as mine!” For the first six weeks of school, our parking lots are completely full. Once those progress reports go out, it seems as if the parking lots thin out. The ones who lose their car for six weeks are given a choice; they may ei- ther ride the bus, walk to school, or catch a ride with a friend. Most of them would rather ride with a friend! One thing is for sure; stu- dents at Central have good taste in cars, ranging from ‘75 Mavericks to ‘86 Honda Preludes. Needless to say, even our cars have ap ‘peel”’. Having someone parking in your place is something all driver's experience. Kit Andrews and Michelle Mayhew return to the school building after getting some book from their cars. EEE EY ES Ss AeTeHeLeEeTeleCeS ee Many students participate in the variety of sport programs offered her at Central. Our teams practice and work hard to be winners, putting their all into compe- tition. Athletics are a large part of Central and they create a special pride in being a Charger. Attend one of our games and you'll feel that certain ap“peel” in the air. From basketball to golf, we have a pride that is not present at any other high school. Take heed of this as you “take a peel”’ of our athletics. eee i Een—EeEeEeEeee City Champs ’86-’87 Chargers defeat Northeast, 51-0, and Southwest, 8-7 he Central Chargers claimed the 1986 - 87 football City Cham- pions title as they routed Northeast, 51 to 0, and slipped by Southwest in a season-ending thriller, 8 to 7. Getting off to a slow 0-3 start, the Chargers came back with a win over Hephzibah in the Homecoming game, thanks to an awe- some job by the defense, which had five sacks for a minus 45 yards. Staring a drive with an excellent punt return by Earl Sanders the Chargers took the lead, 7 to 0, and never looked back. The team went in at the half with a comfortable 21 to 0 lead, and added seven more in the fourth to finish with a 28 to O win. After Hephzibah, the Chargers only managed to win one of their next four games, losing to Warner Robins, Northside, and Baldwin County. The one win, though, 51 to 0 over Northeast, put the squad in contention for the city title. The team only had one more obstacle: Southwest. Southwest, having also beaten Northeast earlier in the season, took a 7 to O lead in the first quarter. They held this lead until the fourth quarter when Charger quarterback Victor Griffin threw a fourth down, 22-yard pass to Bobby Ketchup who pulled down a spectacular, one- handed catch and fell in the end zone which, plus the extra point tied the game 7 to 7 with about eight minutes to go. The game ended at 7 to 7 deadlock thus sending the Chargers and Patriots into overtime. The rule of overtime is if a team doesn’t score in two overtimes, the one with the deepest penetration in the two overtimes wins. Thanks to a Lewis Huff interception and a Mark Davis 30-yard run to Southwest's 20-yard line in the second overtime the Chargers claimed the win, 8 to 7, along with the city championship. The year started out with senior selections, later on the choosing of senior superlatives. Throughout the year, seniors showed the younger students that they were best at pep rallies and football games. Being a senior isn’t all fun and games, however, for the pressure of choosing a college falls upon many seniors. Also, the closer graduation time gets, the more we begin to dread leaving high school. The last year of high school is for most the best and the class of ‘87 made this year a great one! Seniors Rock the House! Priviledges of the ‘87 Seniors Are Questionable of the best things a twelfth-grader could ask for. They are the dominant of the class and every- thing; for instance, they get first choice in the lunch- room. Isn't that great? In addition to that, seniors can pick which parking spaces they want (if the juniors don't try to steal them!) Next, they can show their true colors in the annual, unlike the underclassmen. Also, seniors do not have to wait for the second bell to ring in order to change classes. What a pleasure it must be for them. They have that ‘Super Senior’ spirit. Now, what more could you ask for? We only have...180 days of high school left. At times it seemed as if we wouldn't make it, but we did! Ever since entering high school in the ninth grade, we’ve looked forward to graduating, leaving high school in the past. Now it’s different. We want to stay young; they say your high school years are the best, and we believe that is true. Graduation also means leaving our friends and classmates. This perhaps is the hardest part of all. We’ve grown to know these faces that surrounded us in the hall, or in class. At first they were just faces, but over the course of years, they have become much more to us. These faces have names and personalities that we will miss when we leave We didn’t really take seriously our high school life. We go to school because we have to; we sleep, eat, and find other forms of entertainment outside of school, and even sometimes during school. It is hard to think of ourselves as growing up, and graduation is a part of growing up. Once we graduate, we must have a more serious outlook on life, and realize that it is up to us to create our own futures. To all those who are graduating, good luck, remember your high school years, and keep in touch! A s we Started this year, it seemed like any other year. But it’s not. As for the B advantages — well, as a freshman, you always have an excuse for getting lost during the first weeks of school. Also, there is the transition from middle school to senior high, which brings the opportunity of meeting new people and making new friendships. Freshmen must remember that they are now working to graduate and the grades they make this year will be on their college transcripts. As one may see, the “low man on the totem pole’ doesn’t have it too bad. The freshman class here at Central is the largest and some may say, the bigger, the best. In the following pages, we present our freshman class — and THEY’VE GOT AP Tee’. A tradition that has lasted for well over thirty years. Our Superla- tives are considered the elite of the Senior Class, and are selected as such by the teachers and students of Central High School. Each Superlative must have been nominated by a teacher. They were 1937 then given a point sheet in which each fills out all the school activi- ties they have been involved in since ninth grade. This field is nar- rowed down and then voted on by the Senior Class. All this proves that each must be respected by his peers and teachers, and an “‘all- around” students. As one can see below — our Su- perlatives are ‘‘picture-perfect’’ and have always been placed in the an- nual in this manner. But, this year we've decided to break tradition. Though, the Superlatives are in evening wear, they’re being pre- sented with a different look. One that brings out their true ap ‘peel”’.
