Sophomore fullback Shannon Hall rushed for 138 yards on 24 carries while linebackers Vincent Carey and Dexter Booker and end C.L. Barnes kept the Washington quarterback to only 3 out of 24 attempted passes Coach Simonton was not sure how his team would fare but he was proud of the performance. Although he had wanted to pass more, he had a feeling about Hall; “‘He’s going to be tough. He just has a knack for running the football.’ Central roared through the fourth quarter scoring three touchdowns. Late in the game Javan Ross scooped up a Washington fumble and raced 78 yards to victory. After playing a defensive first half, the Central Chargers opened up in the second half and won the game with a 9-0 victory over the Columbus Blue Devils. Following a scoreless first half Central received the second half kick off but after picking up two first downs, was forced to punt. Three plays later came the first of two big plays for Central when Mark Jones intercepted a pass. Later a bad snap sent the ball soaring over the head of the Devils’ punter. It rolled into the end zone for a two point safety. The game’s only touchdown came fourth quarter as Dexter Booker scampered 7 yards to score. Oh, So Close! The Central Chargers dropped a 14-9 decision to the Douglass Astros Friday, September 5 at Lakewood Stadium in Atlanta. The Chargers’ nine points came in the first quarter when Kelvin Oliver kicked a 28-yard field goal to put the Chargers ahead 3-0 Then quarterback Greg Lockett scored on a one yard run near the end of the quarter to make it 9-0. Lockett completed 8 of 15 passes for 138 yards and rushed for 44 yards. Todd Jackson was Central's leading rusher with 76 yards on 15 carries. Although the Chargers lost the game, they amassed 275 total yards to the Astros’ 104 total yards. The loss evened the Chargers’ record at 4-4. By Fred Grisson, Sports’ Editor The Charger Pride Big Orange Blanks Baldwin Central Chargers had to scratch for the come-from behind win over the Baldwin Braves. Sophomore Shannon Hall was the night's leading rusher with 430 yards, consisting of a 90-yard touchdown. In the second half, John Hurst's interception early in the fourth quarter set up the series of downs that put the Chargers ahead. Four plays after the series began on Central's seven yard line, quarterback Greg Lockett connected with Terrell Simmons down the middle running the remaining 25 yards for a 53-yard scoring play. With this victory, Central is now 3-1 for the season. Carver 12-7 For the second straight week, Central proved to be as good an escape artist as a football team. Led by a superb defensive effort and an offense that performed well enough to squeeze by, the Chargers came from a 7-6 half-time deficit to beat Carver 12-7. Central-winning only three games last year raised its record to 4-4. Senior quarterback Greg Lockett fired two touchdown passes for the Central scoring. A 23-yard strike to Terrell Simmons in the first quarter gave the Chargers an early lead and a 12-yard toss to Tommy Wilder proved to be the game-winner in the third period. Ct ST EN A a, ne ae gee te oan —_ oe Gee 4a eee f Tree yx Northeast Ends Jinx For the last 10 years, Lady Luck has smiled on the Central Chargers whenever they butted heads with crosstown rival, the Northeast Raiders. But she finally smiled on the Raiders as they took a 21-15 decision over the Chargers on Friday night, October 10, at Porter Stadium in Region 2 AAAA East action. The loss broke the Chargers’ record to 4-2 overall. The Chargers made their first touchdown of the night using the strong running of fullback Shannon Hall. Hall marched to the Raider 17-yard line where Charger quarterback Greg Lockett found a wide open Terrell Simmons all alone in the end zone to put Central on the scoreboard. Later in the fourth quarter, Vincent Carey recovered a fumble that set the stage for a one-yard run by Lockett that next capped a pass from Lockett to Dexter Booker on a fake extra point to make it 21-15, the final score. by Fred Grisson, Sports Editor, The Charger Pride Southwest Bites The Dust! It’s been many a year since Macon prep football fans packed Porter Stadium shoulder to shoulder but 40,000 students, parents, and boosters jammed the old stadium to witness the 1980 version of the Central-Southwest city championship. And the two teams didn’t let them down, playing an exciting brand of football. Eleven turnovers highlighted play, two of which the Chargers capitalized on, including a 75-yard interception return by John Troutman for the winning score, to take a 14-7 victory over the Patriots. “Southwest moved the ball on us, they are a very good team, but we got the good plays when we had to have them,” said Coach Tom Simonton of the Chargers. “We had confidence in both our offense and defense.” The Northside Eagles of Warner Robins rose to the occasion when they defeated the Central Chargers on October 31 with a final score of 34-14 Eagles This loss eliminated the 5-4 Chargers from the playoffs in sub-region 2AAAA East. Northside got on the board first with a safety. The Eagles kicked off to the Rise To Chargers, but held them to an 8-yard gain in three plays. On fourth down, Central punter Mo Leverett saw the ball sal over his head Leverett retrieved the ball inside the five yard line and ran out of the end Occasion zone, avoiding a possible Eagle touchdown by giving Northside the two- point safety. Central scored again in the fourth quarter and the final score was 34-14 for the Eagles. i Shaw Stops The Chargers 28-14 Central's final game of the season was a heartbreaker after losing to a 14 point comeback to the Columbus Shaw Raiders. The final score, 28- 44 in favor of the Raiders, gave Central a tie season record of 5-5. This made Coach Simonton’s second year as Central's head coach better than his first. Last year’s record was 3-6-1. Central fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter when Shaw quarterback Vince Allen hit Danny Chambers on a 45 yard touchdown and then scored a two yard touchdown himself. The Chargers narrowed Shaw's lead to 14-8 at half time when Shannon Hall, who had 142 yards on 48 carries, scored from the three and quarterback Greg Lockett hit Dexter Booker on a two point conversion pass. Central tied the score 14-14 on the opening drive of the second half on a 14 yard run by Lockett. Shaw blocked a Central punt at the 9 to set the stage for a 14-yard run by Allen and Terry Hall's 66 yard run put the game out of reach for Central.
