The defense showed consistency in allowing the Bears only one touchdown. David Taylor led in tackles with eight while Mack Guest conduced six. Quarterback Michael Jolly completed 7 of 14 passes for 91 yards and added an additional 64 yards on the ground. Junior tailback Curtis Wiley led the game in rushing, picking up 128 yards in fifteen carries. What A Way To Start! Central Breezes Past Douglas Co. Michael Jolly drops back to pass. Quarterb ack Michael Jolly did his thing in the home opener, completing 8 of 15 passes for 199 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Big Orange gained 386 yards total offense with Wendell Rutherford, the night’s leading rusher, account- ing for 73 yards. The Charger defense was as stubborn as usual allowing the Tigers of Douglas Co. only 109 yards total offense. Se ee. a on nat awe AF a ee ay —. What are ya'll looking for? The Game ends with pride. Jolly on the quarterback keeper. S.C. Team: Not Good Enough After struggling somewhat defensively, the Big Or- ange clung to a 28-14 score to defeat the Keenan Tigers of Columbia, South Carolina. It was the third straight victory in as many games for the Chargers. The South Carolinians came within one touchdown midway into the third quarter, but Buford Clowers cap- italized on a Keenan fumble inside their 40 yard line. Four plays later, Michael Jolly threw a 15 yard touch- down pass to Hodges Glover for the final score. Hodges Glover catches pass. s eS | eS ond = One side BOY One side. Look out, here | come. Central Stan Putnal sloshes out yardage. In the region opener for Central, the state’s 2 ranked power-house rolled over the Butler Bulldogs of Augusta, 42-0. The Chargers were penalized 90 yards but even that didn’t stop the Maconites as they showed the people of Augusta what football is all about Curtis Wiley stoled the show offensively, scoring three touchdowns and leading the running game with 273 yards. David Taylor was in good form, also, converting on all 7 attempted PAT’s. You better leave my buddy alone. Beginning and end of aclean sweep T.D. A Bitter Defeat Richmond Academy’s referees handed the Orange- men of Central a loss of 13-10 in Augusta. It was the first loss in a regular season game for the Chargers since November of 1971. The statistics showed that the Chargers outplayed Richmond, but was pushed back by 138 yards of penalties as compared to 15 for Rich- mond Academy. The team’s brilliant execution of plays proved to the fans of both Central and Richmond that the Chargers are truly a great team! Stan Putnal shows form. Going up! Curtis Wiley gains yardage. Precisioned Timing The Central Chargers managed to close the game with the Mustangs of Merritt Island, Florida, in a 14-14 tie. The Chargers didn’t get warmed up until the second quarter with the score being 14-0. Curtis Wiley broke loose with a 65 yard touchdown run, only to have it nulli- fied by a penalty. The half ended with Central trailing 14-3 after David Taylor kicked a 23-yard field goal. Halfway into the fourth quarter, the Mustangs were held at the five-yard line of Central when the Chargers began their first touchdown drive. The Big Orange drove 95 yards which was highlighted by a 29 yard pass to splint-end Stan Putnal for the score. Regaining possession of the ball, once again the Charg- ers drove to the Floridian’s 20 yard line. With only four seconds remaining, David Taylor kicked Central out of the blue with a 26 yard field goal. Big Orange: Not Short Of Juice In front of 9,500 fans, the Big Orange shattered South- west’s hopes of a 4-AAA championship by rolling over the cross-town rivals, 44-0. The defense was awesome the entire game, recovering 5 of 8 Patriot fumbles and allowing their opponents to cross midfield only twice. Allowing the rivals a total of 23 yards on offense and only one first down were important assets in winning. The Big Orange gained 297 yards total offense Curtis Wil- ey, the night’s leading rusher, accounting for 96 yards. Mi- chael Jolly scored four touchdowns and passed to Walter Hall for another. The only other scoring drive in the game was climaxed by a 33 yard counter pitch pass to Hodges Glover from fullback Wendell Rutherford. “Mooney” chips Chip. When the Chargers get together the spirit flows. Getting up the spirit. The Big “C”. If you liked my shirt, all you had to do was Teamwork The Central Big Orange Chargers captured the city championship by defeating the Northeast Raiders 48-0. The Homecoming game was joyous for both the offen- seive and defensive units. The Chargers took advantage of every Northeast mis- take, changing the errors into touchdowns. Mack Guest, Veotis Williams, Buford Clowers, David Taylor, and Alex Dumas spent most of the night in North- east’s backfield. They took turns dumping the Raider quarterback. Offensively , Mike Jolly, Walter Hall, Hodges Glover, Curtis Wiley, Windell Rutherford and Tom Poole showed brilliant preformances on the field with Rutherford and Poole pacing the Chargers. The main stand out of the game came midway in the third quarter as Rutherford tackled a Northeast player who fumbled to Alexander Dumas who then raced 15 yards for a defensive touchdown. Hey, Hey, Hey! Out a my way! Tom Poole Takes off. Oh So Close, Yet... In what started out as a slow moving game for the Charg- ers, the game ended in exciting efforts for both teams. The Chargers didn’t get rolling until the second half as they trailed, 13-0. The Big Orange made a dynamic comeback, leading at one point, 14-13. Late in the fourth quarter, however, Lucy Laney of Augusta once again scored on a touchdown pass. The two point conversion was good and the Wildcats again led in the scoring, 21-14. It seemed as though it was all over for the Chargers in ‘74. But the Chargers, not to be outplayed, cameback with a touchdown of their own as the scoreboard read: Home: 20 Visitors: 21. The Chargers were then faced with the most important play of the season; our own two point con- version. It failed as the pass was too high to bring down. With less than one minute left in the game, David Taylor kicked a well-executed on-side kick as the Chargers re- covered the ball inside Laney’s 35 yrd. line. However, it was nullified by a Central offside penalty and thoughts of a come-from-behind victory and a region championship were all over. Sto-o-op! That tickles! Bombs Away! You were just a wee-ee bit late. We Shall Rise In ‘75! In the closing game of the season for the Chargers, spirit- ed Northside High of Warner Robins came out on top witha 15-7 score. After leading 7-0 at the half, the Big Orange couldn't keep their momentum going as they were penalized 132 total yards. Even though the Charger’s record was 6-3-1, they were still considered among the tops in the state ... and rightly so. But for those who thought the Chargers had a disappoint- ing season, remember this . . . WE SHALL RISE IN ‘75! t n eg ty N, at oo a Ls ae Fou ag — i ate oe . The newly redone Lanier B gymnasium, christened “the Orange Crate”, gave the Chargers a home court where the Big Orange spirit is felt with strength, pride, and determination by both the players, the student body, and the visiting team. The Central Chargers started the season off with 4 consecutive wins. Their style and ability seemed to foreshadow the extra grey hair other coaches would obtain by their new found powerful competition. Johnny Owens After a terrific start at the beginning of the season, the chargers luck changed as they began loosing by 1 or 2 points mainly in over- time games. As the regular season ended, the Big Orange went into the state playoffs with an overall record of 9-11 and 1-5 in the region. Even though the Chargers may not win the region cham- pionship, they sure know how to spoil other competitor’s chances of being Number I. The Big Orange started off on the right foot but had several setbacks late in the year after some upset victories and impressive outings. Perhaps their most impressive one was early in the year when the Big Orange lost to the defending state cham- pions in a very tight and exciting game.
