Mave Dahisis — AAA Back of the Year 42-20: What a Way to Start! The Central Big Orange Chargers opened up the 1973 cam- paign in grand fashion with a 42-20 shellacking of Clarke-Central High of Athens. The offense, led by Senior backs Steve Dennis, Ogden Hansford, and Jerome Johnson, moved relentlessly through Athens’ defensive ranks. Defensively the Chargers played tough, hard-nosed football until late in the fourth quarter when the heat and humidity took its toll on the players. It was Gene Brodie's first Head Coaching victory. Clarke Central Central The Big Orange Defense at work. Ogden Hansford shows his form. Mack Guest makes the stop. By Ogden Hansford corrals would be runner The offense rolled for 536 yards and the defense had their first shutout as Central made it 2-0 with a 58-0 annihilation of Westside High of Augusta at Porter Stadium. There was little doubt of the outcome of the contest. The Char- gers took a 44-0 lead into the dressing room at halftime. In the second half Gene Brodie emptied the bench to let all the orangemen in on the fun. Westside Central Curtis Wiley turns the corner Who turned out the lights? Faster than a speeding bullet. Get him! After being decked in the first half, Central got up off the floor and came back for a 41-17 knock out of Rich- mond Academy. The putty-like Central defense turned into cement in the second half and stopped the Muske- teers cold. With Curtis Wiley rushing for 118 yards the Big Orange offense continued to look impressive. This game gave Central an idea of the struggle they may be coming up against next Friday night. Jerome Johnson bulls his way. N Steve Dennis takes off. Richmond No Sweat 20-7 (Region Champs?) Steve Dennis takes off on TD jaunt. Southwest Central Patriot runner is seized by Michael Jolly. In what may prove to be the region 4-AAA championship Cen- tral scored a 20-7 victory over cross-town rival Southwest before a gathering of over 9,000 spectators at Porter Stadium. Tension mounted all during the week with both schools confident of victory. School pride was evident from the thunderous response from the crowd throughout the game. Central took the opening kickoff and mounted a 62-yard drive in 10 plays capped by a 14-yard run by Steve Dennis. Taylor's PAT made it 7-0 and the Charger fans were feeling pretty good. Not for long, however, as Southwest capital- ized on a Central fumble and a miscue in the defensive secondary to knot the score even at 7-7. The score remained this way until midway in the third quarter when Michael Jolly returned a punt 44 yards to set up Central's second touchdown of the evening. A later score in the fourth quarter put the game on ice. Central is now rest- ing comfortably on top of the region standings. 5 Down — 5 to Go Butler 0 |0 |0|0|0 Central 0) 13 | 6) 28)47 Augusta: Sure Was a Long Way to Go For a Victory. After a slow first half, the Central Big Orange Chargers tuned up their high-scoring offensive machine and rolled over Butler of Augusta 47-0. Once again Steve Dennis was the leading ground gainer in the game with 164 yards in 17 carrie s. He was amply supported by Michael Jolly and Jerome Johnson. Not to be out. done, the Charger defense finally played up to their expectation; and held the hard-rushing Bulldogs to minus 9 yards rushing. “Strong slot left, 23 kick right.’ Steve Dennis makes Hardaway a believer. The infantry went to war in Porter Stadium where Central High piled up 441 yards rushing — 278 of them by Steve Dennis who scored five touchdowns to give him a total of nine for the past two weeks — in a 49-23 Homecoming victory over Hardaway of Columbus. Number two-ranked Central proved Hardaway was out of place among the state powers. Hawk runner ‘‘flips ’ over A. C. Colbert. Sammy Marshall zeroes in on Hawk runner. Hardaway TT tk m= 4 “| have divided her qualifications into three categories, at least one of which should appeal to you. Roll On! 42-9 ay — , QNTRAL The ‘‘brothers,’’ A. C. Colbert and Harry Colbert in action. The Steve Dennis touchdown parade continued for its third straight week. The senior signal caller collected 4 TD's in a 42-9 romp over Glenn Hills of Augusta. Suffering from an obvious let down following last weeks Homecoming victory, the Chargers got off to a very slow start. But by the fourth quarter they showed Glenn Hills why they were ranked second in the state. Glenn Hills Central RBH SZ OO YD No T Michael Jolly A fired up band of Big Orange defenders held the Lucy Laney Wildcats to a microscopic 10 yards rushing in paving the way to a 21-6 victory. The Chargers went into the locker room trailing 0-6. But in the second half the offense, led by Michael Jolly, who rushed for 144 yards in 15 carries, removed all thoughts of upset that the L aney players and fans might have had. Central wound up with a total offense of 376 yards as compared to 108 yards for the bad guys. Central Coach McWilliams and Coach Brodie look on Northeast Central _ Ho-Hum 51-3 After two weeks on the road the Orangemen returned to Macon to crush Northeast 51-3 at Henderson Stadium. As a foreshadow. ing of things to come, A. C. Colbert took the opening kickoff back 88 yards and with less than 13 seconds gone the Chargers had a7. 0 lead. A combination of big plays by the stingy Central defense actually did more damage than the heralded offense of Roy McWilliams. The Chargers, determined to run Northeast out of Macon, never let up the entire game. Michael Jolly sprints after interception. Orange Warner Robins — Country KILL 1 Na aS Steve Dennis does his thing. Burned 14-13 Central advanced to the state semi-finals with a 14-13 squeaker over Warner Robi ns before a crowd of 12,500 onlookers. Central and Warner Robins entered this confron- tation with identical 10-0 records. The initial score of the game came on a one yard plunge by tailback A. C. Colbert capping a 16-play 79-yard drive. David Taylor's PAT was wide. Following a Central fumble, Warner Robins drove for the tying touchdown. The point after the touchdown gave the Demons a 7-6 halftime lead. After a short punt, Central drove 33 yards, highlighted by a crucial 28-yard fourth-down pass to A. C. Colbert from Steve Dennis for the go ahead score. Central went for the 2 point conversion and got it with a pass from Dennis to Ogden Hansford. The game became a stalemate until Warner Rob- ins recovered a Central bobble at the Orange 24. Seven plays later Warner Robins closed the gap to 14-13. The Demons, aware of Central's domination of penetra- tion standings, went for the 2-point conversion. The pass attempt fell to the turf incomplete. Central ran out the last 6 minutes and 45 seconds with a time consuming drive that ended on the Robins 11-yard line at the final buzzer. Now came the time for Central to find out what 1 is all about. Actionis... A foot denied the Chargers their second consecutive State AAA Championship berth as the Thomasville Bulldogs shutout the Big Orange 6-0 at Porter Stadium in front of 7,500 fans. The Chargers, who were averaging almost 41 points per game, were simply out-manned by the bigger Thomasville squad. The first half was a classic defensive battle with both teams failing to put points on the board. Both schools had a chance to have the lead before halftime. The Chargers failed to cash in on three field goal attempts while Thomasville was wide on one. eek Ogden Hansford and Sammy Marshall pursue Bulldog runner. Steve Dennis finds little running room in Thomasville game. In the third quarter Thomasville took advantage of a Central fumble and pushed 31 yards to gain a slim 6-0 lead. Central's last chance for victory came following a 42-yard pass interception by Ogden Hansford which set the Chargers up in business on the Bull dog 8. Three plays lost one yard and on fourth down Steve Dennis hit A. C. Colbert on a rollout. He was smothered at the one. It was a great season, almost a perfect one.
