End LANIER VS APPLING 45-0 In the season opener, Lanier stopped every offensive try by the Appling Wildcats, and combined with a great offensive push by star fullback Isaac Jackson, routed Appling 48-0. Jackson ran for four touchdowns with Robbie Smith, Ralph Clark, and Ronnie Payton scoring one T. D. apiece. Mike Faulk started quarterbacking this game and continued for the rest of the season It was a good game, but LANIER VS MARK SMITH A tremendous defense plus the deadly passing (10 out of 17 completions) of Mike Faulk added up to the complete distruc- tion of the Mark Smith Bulldogs, 36-6. Scoring against the Dogs were Isaac Jackson, Robbie Smith, Ralph Clark, Alonzo Wade, and Charles Haugabrooks. The Big Orange walloped Mark Smith in all statistics, particularly yards rushing 157-26, and yards passing, 152-93. “UP, UPANDAWAY™ LANIER VS BAKER Charles Haugabrooks led the Poets by scoring two touch- downs against Baker, defeating th em 48-6. Also scoring one T. D. each were Clark, Summers, Jackson, (who was hampered by an ankle injury) Faulk, and Willis. The Lions scored early in the game, running a touchdown from the kickoff in eleven plays, making the score, 6-0. Lanier came back and completely demolished Baker’s offense and defense for the rest of the game. Maybe now everyone will say about Lanier “EMA BELIEVER LANIER VS NORTHSIDE 42-6 “ITKEEPS ON A'HURTING .. .. So says Isaac Jackson who was sidelined after 2 plays against the Northside Eagles; but Robbie Smith and Ralph Clark led the Poet offen- sive move to a 42-6 victory. Summers and Haugabrooks scored one T. D. a piece and Ricky Dennis booted perfectly except for one miss during the game in conver- sion attempts STO ROQ™ AR B® HMO Ss ey 34-0 Charles Haugabrooks, still subbing for star fullback Isaac Jackson, played a terrific game, scoring twice, while the Big Orange defeated the Ballad Hudson Wildcats, 34-0. Clark made a fantastic interception, for which he is now becoming well known, and ran for a 58 yard T. D. Also scoring was Andy Summers, and Alonzo Wade. And as George Jones was saying afterwards “I GET A KICK OUT OF YOU!” L A N [ g R V By B A L L A R D H U D S O IN 21-O LANIER VS WARNER ROBINS Fullback Andy Summers ran for a fabulous 72 yard T. D. against Warner Robins in the beginning of the first in the most explosive game of the year for Lanier. Both the Demons and the Big Orange went into the game undefeated, but Lanier came out on top, 21-0. Isaac Jackson and Mike Faulk each scored on good runs and Ricky Dennis was successful on all three conversion attempts. William Harden was a defensive star of the game, pouncing on a fumble to end a big Demon threat. We realize that “Al LASi- LANIER VS MOULTRIE 14-0 For the first time in many years, Lanier defeated thé Moultrie Packers, outclassing them in offensive rushing, 262 yards to 118. The Big Orange ran on to an impressive 14-0 victory over the Packers Bob Giddens, scoring on a 19 yard pass from Mike Faulk, Andy Summers, running 5 yards to strike paydirt, and Charles Haugabrooks, scoring a two-point conversion from Faulk, led the Poets to glory. Robbie Smith ran for 54 yards, and Ralph Clark picked up 11 yards during the game. LANIER VS COLUMBUS 16-14 With 46 seconds left to play, Lanier’s Ricky Dennis kicked a fantastic 27 yard field goal to see beat the Columbus Blue Devil’s 16—14. The Big oFy nse gees © yj ©Orange’s Summers scored twice within 4 min- ——— — utes in the first half to put up a 13—0 lead. In the last minutes of the half the Devils scored bringing the score to 13—7. Columbus scored once again in the second half, leading Lanier 14—13. It was then that Dennis won the game for the Big Orange, keeping our perfect season record. It was really “SPOOKY” LANIER VS JORDAN 47-6 Charles Haugabrooks again ran wild for Lanier before 4,500 Homecoming fans, leading the Poets to a great 47—6 victory over the Jordan Red Jackets. The Big Orange’s 353 yards rushing made the Red Jackets 42 yards look terrible. Andy Summers ran for two T. D.’s with Ralph Clark catching a pass in the end zone and Tim Hinson recovering a fumble in the end zone. Robbie Smith caught a two-point conversion. Big George Jones stopped a final Jordan field goal attempt in the final seconds of the game. Between the beautiful homecoming queen and candidates and the glory after the game we could call it “THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES” LANIER VS WILLINGHAM 18-7 Lanier ended it’s regular season with a perfect record, demolishing the Willingham Rams 18—7 before 7,500 shivering’ Jans in sub-freezing, windy weather. Andy Summers led the scoring with 50 and 39 yard runs. Ralph Clark scored on a tremendous pass from Faulk. Making great defensive moves for the night were Joel Willis, Gil Schenks, Robert Bost, and William Hardin. So we can very well say that — “In Every Way” 2— AAA-CHAMP LANIER VS COLUMBUS 21-14 Andy Summers broke a deadlock with the Columbus Blue Devils in the Region 2—AAA championship with a terrific plunge over the goal line in a hard fought 21—14 victory. The game was keyed to defense in that neither team could penetrate the other on many occasions Ralph Clark scored the first T. D. on a 48 yard run and Alonzo Wade struck paydirt after a 45 yard run after a fantastic interception. Great defensive moves were terrific blocking by Dennis, Schenks, and Reggie Jackson “YOUR GOOD THING'S ABOUT TO Star fullback Issac Jackson was injured again in the second id quarter and did not return to action. And it was about this d yi a ae time that Valdosta was thinking a 3 Se PS ie ae ae | LANIER VS VALDOSTA 0-23 Vaidosta’s powerful Wildcats, stymied for the first quarter erupted for two second quarter T. D.’s and went on to completely overwhelm Lanier’s Big Orange, 23—0, on November 28, 1969, in the class AAA South Georgia semi-finals. Valdosta manhandled the Poets offensively and defensively. The Big Orange did not even make a first down until 2:21 remained in the third quarter and had only three all night. In fact their total offense was 97 yards w ith the majority coming in one play. The Big Orange had its chances, intercepting two passes (Joel Willis and Alonzo Wade) and recovering one fumble, but just could not go against the Valdosta defense. All the Big Orange players put up a brave battle, but were laid to shambles by mighty Valdosta. At Lanier, students completed the first full year in the new building. Miller saw her thirty-second birth- day. Coeducation saw the most definite steps taken towards it since 1924. The Lanier football team captured a hard- fought region championship for the second year in a row. And the date “February |”’ and the numbers “60 — 40” will have a new significance for the rest of our lives. The staff has tried to capture these and other events the best we know how. Our thanks goes out to Charlie Dorsey, our annual consultant, and to Joe DeGrandis, our photographer. Our thanks and respect go to Miss Long and Mr. McElroy for the tremendous part they played in this annual. As we write this, we don’t know if the Sabers and Sashes will exist next year. No one can even predict whether “Lanier” and “ Miller”’ will exist next year. The only thing we can be sure of is that 1970 is the end 07 AN C49... The Editors Debra Emerick and Mike Rainwater
