This team will long be remembered as the team that overcame the seven year jinx of Wil- lingham. The team was paced throughout t he season by strong play from several sophomores and juniors. Even though the Poets finished with a 5 — 5 region 1-AAA record, every team who went up against Lanier came out knowing they had played a truly great, hard-hitting team that would never give up. Shirley Harrison, Cathy Green; STANDING— Bo Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Buddy Doyle, Shirley Coleman In Lanier Sugar Bear Band After a rigorous week of work in North Geor- gia ' s Camp Wasega, this year ' s Sugarbears returned to Macon and presented an outstanding season of half-time shows ranging from Tiajuana Brass to Batman. About mid-season the march- ing band appeared in their new British style uni- forms. At Homecoming the Lanier and Mark Smith Bands performed in a joint half-time show saluting the United Nations and furnishing background music for the crowning of the Home- oming Queen. Football season was only the beginning of the band ' s activities. A trip to the University of Geor- gia ' s Band Day, a Christmas Concert with the Mabel White Baptist Choir, the State Music Festival, a spring concert, and a concert tour through South Georgia cities highlighted the year ' s many events. The funds necessary to conduct these activities were raised by the band members, majorettes, and flag girls during numerous candy and cake sales. The enthusiasm shown by the band wher- ever it performed, whether at a pep rally or a concert, best exemplified the true Sugarbear spirit. Mr. Bob Barnette — Director Holy massacres. Batman. Terry Harris— Drum Major Sugar Bear Band in action w CfM il X rA f.ik mi Basketball Possibly the most balanced team that Lanier has ever produced faced the toughest region 1- AAA competition ever. This year ' s squad, under the guidance of Coach Henry Middlebrooks, al- ways exerted pressure when pressure was needed and presented a most exciting season. After an excellent record of 22-5, the Poets journeyed to the region tournament with hopes of playing in the state tournament in Albany. Every team that faced the Poet Five knew that they had played a team with spirit plus. With eight players return- ing, next year ' s expectations are truly high. At the critical moment the swimmer cannot count on luck or the wisdom of a coach or the strength of a teammate to sustain him. However good his team may be, in every race and on every relay leg, the individual competi- tor must settle the issue solely on the basis of his own merits. As he matches his rivals stroke for stroke and as he tumbles in the silver fury of a turn, he can count only on his own wits and strength and determination. Good hitting and improved fielding are expected to enable the team to defeat strong competition. Steve Arrington, Billy Taylor, Bobby Kimsey, Gary Veal, Cliff Bowers, Dan Riley and C. A. Stillwell return to form the nucleus of this year ' s team. Outstanding track stars will repre- sent Lanier in regional and state competition. Increased interest and participation will be a great asset to the team. Determination and agility are the out- standing qualities of this year ' s team. With the proven ability of Har- ris Hines and the potential talent of newer mem- bers, Lanier ' s team should develop into a group capable of upholding the Poet tradition. ' 66 A tense week began with the selection of ten lovely candidates for Homecoming Queen. On two occasions these candidates were introduced to the Lanier student body. Anticipation and sus- pense made the day of the big game with Mark Smith pass slowly for these few, but finally night fell and the long-awaited half-time arrived. On the basis of her poise, personality, and charm, Miss Monnie Agnew was honored with the title of Homecoming Queen for 1966-67. Her court consisted of Miss Mary McGaughey, Miss Shir- ley Coleman, and Miss Carolyn Clancy. ' Miss Carolyn Clancy 4 MONNIE AGNEW— Most notable for her endeavors to promote solidarity among the students. An intuitive leader and capable diplomat. BOB ANDERSON— A cheerful, pleasant disposition is Bob An- derson ' s most outstanding characteristic. This friendliness coupled with his excellence in military, scholastics, and sports caused him to rank as a Lanier superlative. BRANNON BONIFAY— Modest and unpretentious, Brannon Bonifay won the devotion of his classmates as a loyal Lanierian who was a standout not only in athletics, but in the classroom, and as a Christian gentleman in the most literal sense. CAROLYN CLANCY -Her spriteliness and refreshing good looks coupled with a disarming naivete make her a favorite with everyone. The paragon of femininity. y SHIRLEY COLEMAN — An effervescent good humor, unpre- dictable wit. and indomitable spirit make her not only an appeal- ing but also an amusing young lady. STEVE CARREKER- Outstanding qualities of leadership, aca- demic excellence, a dynamic personality and an uncompromising dedication to Christian ideals earned for Steve Carreker the re- spect and esteem of his associates. CARL ELLINGTON— The epitome of spirit and capability, Carl Ellington has proved to be an outstanding athlete and scholar. His sense of responsibility and amiable manner were prime factors in his being elected a superlative. LYNN JOINER--A girl in whom may be found the poise, man- ner, and modesty of a lady com bined with the determination and drive of an entrepreneur. KAREN LEWIS — Truly an idealist, yet imbued with a romantic quality. A zealous worker possessed of illimitable energy and en- thusiasm. JERRY GOLDBAUGH— Relaxed, likable, moving at an easy pace in school, Jerry Goldbaugh became dynamite on the basket- ball court. His deceptively easy-going manner masked strong drive and purpose which resulted in both athletic and academic success. JOHN REEVES- John Reeves used his exceptional abilities to the fullest in serving Lanier. His keen mind and quiet good humor brought him positions of leadership in all phases of school life. This contest is sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The girl selected should have the following qualities: patriotism, dependability, leadership, personality, civic re- sponsibility, consideration of others, and interest in family, school, community, and nation. Star Students are chosen from every high school in the state on the basis of the December College Boards and academic record. Only one out of this group is selected to represent the en- tire state. Congratulations and good luck to our Star Students, Brena Gibson and Horace Mc- Swain. An unusual and outstanding honor is to be se- lected to participate in the Senate Youth Pro- gram in Washington, D.C. Mary Kathryn Za- chary was one of two students from Georgia who had this opportunity. She won an exciting week- long trip to Washington. Seven students from Miller and Lanier parti- cipated in the Governor ' s Honors Program, a stimulating program held at Wesleyan College each summer for 400 of Georgia ' s high school students. Stillwell, Science omB Miller Clubs 80 Lanier Clubs 108 STUDENT COUNCIL Monnie Agnew, President Student Council Seeks Pathways to Prosperity Miller ' s Student Council works with the teach- ers and clubs to promote the general welfare of the school and community and to facilitate good student-teacher relationships. The Student Coun- cil takes suggestions from the students and keeps them informed through representatives in each supervision. Some highlights of an activity-filled year are the Thanksgiving and Christmas pro- jects, Honor Week, Spirit Week, a trip to Rich ' s, and the sale of address books. We could never forget the expression on Miss Kellum ' s face as she looked at her foamy white desk ... or the dis- tinguished faculty volleyball team losing a tough battle (played mostly from the floor) to the spiri- ted Junior champions who could not forget that last year, when they were sophomores, the facul- ty beat them. Also never to be forgotten were the screams of joy which engulfed Lasseter ' s gym after Miller won the volleyball trophy. Gym ac- tivities added variety and fun to a year of hard work.
