MILLER SENIOR LANIER SENIOR MACON, GEORGIA [he leisurely days of summer are a half-remembered dream once again we return to the frenetic pace of autumn ... ginkgo trees make iden carpet and the air is fresh and tingling As nature prepares for her winter’s sleep, Miller and Lanier come alive with the urgency of youth, exhilarated with life with the anxiety of football games, the happiness of Homecoming, Sponsors’ Day, bonfires, pep rallies, superlatives the doubt and uncertainty of the first report card, of “being accepted,” of grasping high school’s new challenge All of these are autumn at Miller and Lanier it is a time when 2,000 youth embark upon a journey, amid the heritage of two schools, aged in years, nevertheless perpetually young because of youth in them a journey which leaves childhood behind and maturity just around the corne1 with each traveler rarely look- ing back an Odyssey called education Sp = a) s CO a: = Ss sD = A Winter 1s Repose and Actwity ' he t y { c Fr As fall fades into the gray Somberness of winter, the tran- quil world takes its repose |). the days seem shorter and assignments longer .. . Winter is many things to many people ... walking in the hippy air, lost in thought |). 0a light, magic layer of snow a cold hand On a colderrifie ... college board exams the wild frenzy of basketball games ... defeating Wil- lingham .. the joy and warmth of Christmas . .. the thrill of wearing new clothes for the first time ... the gala atmosphere and hilarity of New Year’s Eve Winter is a time when nature slows its pace and youth accelerates its quest for identity in a society which places tremendous pressure on the young ... when the earnest- ness of youth is balanced against the wisdom of the age. Spring 1s End and Beginning The incessant activity and vitality of the world grips Miller and Lanier in the spring as nature zestfully be- gins its year, the year of school ends on an equally ringing note Spring signals the advent of Competitiv ght Sports Day baseball games Recognition Day . the Military Ball choosing cheerleaders meeting dead- lines Graduation and for some, the wonder of love rhis is spring, the grand finale of a year that has passed too rapidly to remember, and yet, too slowly to forget a year which will melt irretrievably into the past . and when Miller and Lanier have changed and we, older in years, in a moment of sentimental evaluation reminisce about youth perhaps we too shall say, “Ah, this younger generation” because Miller and Lanier will have left upon us the indelible imprint of success and failures, heart- aches and happiness which will remain with us for- ever more. BOARD OF EDUCATION ai or A mS + Only one man may claim the unique distinction of being the first Lanier principal to have graduated from Lanier this man is Elton Wall For a great portion of his life, Elton Wall was associated with Lanier in the capacity of student, teacher, and coac h. Through his past service and his present position as prin- cipal, Mr. Wall has always exemplified those exacting qualities which Lanier continually strives to instill into its students. In his short tenure at Lanier, he has revolutionized the functions of an old institution. Better teacher working conditions, more intense and more numerous courses, and general administration efficiency have marked Lanier un- der Mr. Wall. To head the operations of a school of one thousand boys, a remarkable man is the order of the day, and our principal is this man. The Lanier Annual staff proudly salutes Elton L. Wall. The Miller Annual staff wishes to recognize our prin- cipal, Miss Clara Nell Hargrove. for the quality of the achievements which have marked her work at Miller Senior High. She constantly strives to improve; the results are obvious. Every member of the student body is aware of our school’s reputation for academic excellence and high standards. Miss Hargrove has organized the school so well that we seldom realize how much administrative work is involved in the daily functioning of a school of this size. Finally, we would note the support and cooperation which she gives us in our projects and extra-curricular activities. We proudly salute for het superior leadership, Miss Clara Nell Hargrove. aS ae pee: WwrepAaLt — 2 Wess: i 1 ; : } TTT nl Rae a ae ofle anh et eh hin Se Ny iran one tl LANIER FACULTY— BEST IN YEARS The vigor and spirit of a crop of new, youthful teachers, combined with the unflagging steadiness and wisdom of the more seasoned, gave Lanier its most out- standing faculty in many years. A unique breed of teacher is required to instruct teenage boys—a teacher with deep dedication, and exemplary moral character, patience, and a sense of humor. While commanding the respect of boys, the faculty has also gained their admiration. No amount of eloquence could express our gratitude to and love for the faculty. The teachers and administrators of Lanier have abided by the simple but exacting claim, “We Lead.” Henry Middlebrooks Assistant Principal Bobby N. Each teacher gives her pupils a chance to involve themselves in an experi- ence which may never come again, the learning experience. These adults have a grave responsibility—one of providing students with a foundation for general culture, of broadening their viewpoints, and of developing sound thinking. It is with respect and awe that we at Miller realize how well this responsibility is met. Since competition among companies for honor points in other phases of the military was quite keen, the additional points offered by basketball, track, softball, football, and volleyball champion- ships were alluring and sparked an unprecedented rivalry. Carter, Infantry Professor of Military Science, Lanier Senior High School Although a personal tribute is in order for Captain Carter, the most appropriate accolade would be a de- scription of the lives that he has influenced. While other professional military men are defending their country in combat, Captain Carter has accomplished perhaps more for his country’s defense in four years than any other soldier has with a lethal weapon in a whole career. He and his military staff have produced hundreds of Lanier graduates who have a sense of pride in themselves and their country. Captain Carter has never demanded respect without deserving it; he has never ordered a subordinate to do a task which he himself could not do; he has exacted honesty from his cadets and he has given it to them in return; his duties have required that he be a firm disci- plinarian, but he has never abused his authority. Under his direction, the Lanier ROTC has become a model, admired and imitated by other high school and college ROTC units. His most significant attribute is that, in every sense, he is a man. The United States need not fear if all its fighting men rank in Captain Carter’s category.
