STUDENTS CHOOSE FROM BROAD ENGLISH CURRICULUM June 7—Graduation Day for seniors and the com- pletion of a five-year study of their country’s lang- uage, English. Entering Lanier with ninth grade English behind them, sophomores are faced with ex- tensive grammar and composition study, climaxed by the writing of a short research paper. In litera- ture they analyze short stories. When students reach their junior year, they are encouraged to try creative writing. Each student is required to write a short story. Juniors also look deeper into the works of American authors such as, Whitman, Thoreau, Benet, and Frost. Senior English deals with writing a detailed re- search paper using footnotes, and further practice in composition. Literature deals with a representa- tive study of the literature of England from Beo- wulf to T. S. Eliot. Business English is offered for people who have decided to enter the business world. Through a study of the English language and lit- erature and their development, students can better atthew Matthews understand the past and prepare for the future. a ) Jessup McCullough LANGUAGE LABORATORY BEGINS NEW STUDY APPROACH Communicating with the peoples of other nations has become vitally important in this shrinking world where Europe, South America and all other continents are only a few hours away. Aware of this fact, curriculum planners offer a student two for- eign languages—French and Spanish. Chansons Spanish students listen to taped dialogues, drama- tizations of stories, and pattern drills spoken by a number of native speakers. Taking dictation, memo- rizing dialogues, and answering questions in near- native accents, they add a new and exciting di- mension to their understanding of the culture and language of our neighbors to the South. Students of the modern languages have the ad- vantage of hearing their subject spoken in the new language laboratory. Through the use of tape-re- corders, microphones and earphones, they are able to improve accents, comprehension and speed of conversation. Esta es Brasilia
