SCIENCE COURSES REFLECT SPACE AGE With the world advancing rapidly into the space age, the importance of science is constantly increas ing. Lanier students are fortunate in having access to an adequate science curriculum which begins pre- paring them for the demands of this competitive age. A course in biology offers the sophomore a chance to study life itself. Through projects, models, film- ustrips, dissections of plants and animals and various other aids, a student becomes familiar with life pro- cesses, Having studied life, students are taught the com- position and changes of materials of life and its en- vironment through the study of chemistry. Labora- tory experiments, projects, workbooks, and class- room discussions are used in teaching principles of chemistry. As biology and chemistry concern life in some form, physics deals with the inanimate side of science. In physics the student delves into motion, force, electricity, light reflections and other sub- jects dealing with material laws and processes. Clements MATHEMATICS, ESSENTIAL IN ALL WALKS OF LIFE At Lanier, students are offered a well-rounded curriculum of mathematics ranging from business arithmetic to special mathematics. Students enrolled in business arithmetic advance from bank pro- cedures to other problems of the business world; whereas algebra covers the fundamental principles of mathematics. Students extend such basic facts to include quadratics, equations and graphs. Some students elect to take plane geometry, which covers surfaces and lines, while others finish the plane geometry text and advance to matrices and vectors. Seniors are offered solid geometry or trigonom- etry in which they master theorems and use sines, cosines and tangents. High school mathematics is a basis for solving some of the problems that lie ahead for each student. Middlebrooks

SOCIAL STUDIES TRAIN LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS Now as never before the youth of America must be educated in history and world affairs, because politics and culture of nations live as a result of yesterday. The twentieth century has brought with it a vast advance in the field of science, a progression which seriously outstrips man’s understanding of man- kind. Where man once used bows and arrows, today he uses mechanical brains and nuclear weapons which can ruin whole nations in a few minutes. Pos- sibly the answer for the future lies in the past. History courses give leaders and followers of to- morrow insight into problems of today through the study of yesterday. In combined courses, students learn to understand people of other nations. Hence, social studies are a start toward better relations among nations, a significant element of peace. Brannen STUDENTS PREPARE FOR FUTURE VOCATIONS IN BUSINESS WORLD Daviston Tomorrow's business leaders must be trained to- day. This thought is closely related to Lanier’s Com- mercial Courses which include a variety of subjects. Lanier offers Typing I and II, which give stu- dents knowledge of typing methods, letter forms and secretarial work; and Bookkeeping I and II, which instructs students in the technique of keeping office files and ledgers. STUDENTS CHOOSE FROM BROAD ENGLISH CURRICULUM June 7—Graduation Day for seniors and the com- pletion of a five-year study of their country’s lang- uage, English. Entering Lanier with ninth grade English behind them, sophomores are faced with ex- tensive grammar and composition study, climaxed by the writing of a short research paper. In litera- ture they analyze short stories. When students reach their junior year, they are encouraged to try creative writing. Each student is required to write a short story. Juniors also look deeper into the works of American authors such as, Whitman, Thoreau, Benet, and Frost. Senior English deals with writing a detailed re- search paper using footnotes, and further practice in composition. Literature deals with a representa- tive study of the literature of England from Beo- wulf to T. S. Eliot. Business English is offered for people who have decided to enter the business world. Through a study of the English language and lit- erature and their development, students can better atthew Matthews understand the past and prepare for the future. a ) Jessup McCullough LANGUAGE LABORATORY BEGINS NEW STUDY APPROACH Communicating with the peoples of other nations has become vitally important in this shrinking world where Europe, South America and all other continents are only a few hours away. Aware of this fact, curriculum planners offer a student two for- eign languages—French and Spanish. Chansons Spanish students listen to taped dialogues, drama- tizations of stories, and pattern drills spoken by a number of native speakers. Taking dictation, memo- rizing dialogues, and answering questions in near- native accents, they add a new and exciting di- mension to their understanding of the culture and language of our neighbors to the South. Students of the modern languages have the ad- vantage of hearing their subject spoken in the new language laboratory. Through the use of tape-re- corders, microphones and earphones, they are able to improve accents, comprehension and speed of conversation. Esta es Brasilia
