SELBY BUCK LEM CLARK The reputation of a school is built slowly, not instantaneously, and sports is one of the main ways through which it is achieved. Throughout Lanier’s history its name has symbolized athletic and academic leadership. We, the senior class of 1961, deem it only fitting that we dedicate this annual to the memory of two of its outstanding coaches—Selby Buck and Lem Clark. Selby Buck, a man respected and admired throughout Georgia for his athletic ability, left behind a coaching record surpassed or equaled by few.: During his thirty years at Lanier, his teams won five state championships in football, two in baseball, and eleven in basketball. Twice he served as president of the Georgia High School Coaches Association. He was chosen Georgia Coach of the Year in 1948 and was among the first to be elected to the Georgia Prep Hall of Fame. In 1955 Coach Buck retired from the Lanier coaching scene because of poor health. Until his death in January, 1961, he headed the Bibb County Athletic Department, con- tinually striving to improve sports facilities in the county public schools. In 1931 a player coached by Buck came to Lanier to aid him. Lem Clark, after a successful high school and college career, returned to his Alma Mater to become assistant grid coach and head baseball coach, positions he held until 1940 and from 1946 to 1950. While at Lanier, he led his baseball teams to two official state cham- pionships and six unofficial ones. After the Korean Conflict and three years at Brunswick’s Glynn Academy, Coach Clark resettled in Macon to begin his teaching duties at Lanier Junior High. Soon, however, he was forced to seek a leave of absence because of illness, an illness which ultimately resulted in death. Lemual Jay Clark, who radiated spirit and morale, was an asset to the school and to its boys. Had it not been for the records that their teams made and the later accomplish- ments of the boys that they coached, Lanier would not be so well-known today. These two men, Selby Buck and Lem Clark, exemplify the Lanier Spirit—that of sportsmanship, honor, and achievement. They have left an intangible mark on this school that will be cherished by its student body for years to come.

This 1960-61 school annual is indeed a tribute to the ingenuity of its staff and advisors. The new arrangement of all pictures indicates initiative, imagination and skill, and the broad coverage of all school activities reveals careful thought and planning. My pride in your achievement is now, yours will be on some distant tomorrow when, as you review these pages, you recall memories of friendship and school events dimmed by passing years but never entirely forgotten. Only then can you sing with Walt Whitman — “Thanks in old age—thanks ere I go For precious, everlingering memories.”
