7 Tp ph MILLER-LANIER Volume XXX Lanier Senior High School Macon, Georgia Tretton is a word representative of Lanier—its alumni and its students. Our 5 Lanier predecessors, sparked by such slogans aS We lead cnnlatePoetss and: :“Itwrprensie ‘ ee - _ Can Be Done,” have built an env of,accomplishment in school, state and — nationWe at Lanier, whether realizing it or not, are receiving one of the best prep- eS - arations available for life. We are learning how to preserve and build tradition. Everyone has his own set of memories, and it would be impossible to inclydg ’ Ser) CARSON them all. Therefore, the Annual attempts only to present the large events in hope that these will provide a means for recalling the more personal ones. In the following pages you will find Lanier and its activities—from the very ordinary to the unusual, from the scholarly to the sportsmanlike—all rewarding. IT ADMINISTRATION Page 8-11 I DEDICATION SAN ; es SUPERLATIVES VI MILITARY — a p 7h 04-129 — III CLASSES Pages 12-57 Bs ass ame IV ACTIVITIES Pages 58-81 _ . SELBY BUCK LEM CLARK The reputation of a school is built slowly, not instantaneously, and sports is one of the main ways through which it is achieved. Throughout Lanier’s history its name has symbolized athletic and academic leadership. We, the senior class of 1961, deem it only fitting that we dedicate this annual to the memory of two of its outstanding coaches—Selby Buck and Lem Clark. Selby Buck, a man respected and admired throughout Georgia for his athletic ability, left behind a coaching record surpassed or equaled by few.: During his thirty years at Lanier, his teams won five state championships in football, two in baseball, and eleven in basketball. Twice he served as president of the Georgia High School Coaches Association. He was chosen Georgia Coach of the Year in 1948 and was among the first to be elected to the Georgia Prep Hall of Fame. In 1955 Coach Buck retired from the Lanier coaching scene because of poor health. Until his death in January, 1961, he headed the Bibb County Athletic Department, con- tinually striving to improve sports facilities in the county public schools. In 1931 a player coached by Buck came to Lanier to aid him. Lem Clark, after a successful high school and college career, returned to his Alma Mater to become assistant grid coach and head baseball coach, positions he held until 1940 and from 1946 to 1950. While at Lanier, he led his baseball teams to two official state cham- pionships and six unofficial ones. After the Korean Conflict and three years at Brunswick’s Glynn Academy, Coach Clark resettled in Macon to begin his teaching duties at Lanier Junior High. Soon, however, he was forced to seek a leave of absence because of illness, an illness which ultimately resulted in death. Lemual Jay Clark, who radiated spirit and morale, was an asset to the school and to its boys. Had it not been for the records that their teams made and the later accomplish- ments of the boys that they coached, Lanier would not be so well-known today. These two men, Selby Buck and Lem Clark, exemplify the Lanier Spirit—that of sportsmanship, honor, and achievement. They have left an intangible mark on this school that will be cherished by its student body for years to come. This 1960-61 school annual is indeed a tribute to the ingenuity of its staff and advisors. The new arrangement of all pictures indicates initiative, imagination and skill, and the broad coverage of all school activities reveals careful thought and planning. My pride in your achievement is now, yours will be on some distant tomorrow when, as you review these pages, you recall memories of friendship and school events dimmed by passing years but never entirely forgotten. Only then can you sing with Walt Whitman — “Thanks in old age—thanks ere I go For precious, everlingering memories.” DR. H. GC. WEAVER MR. MALLORY C. MR. WALLACE MILLER, JR. MR. W. P. L. MILLER SENIOR HIGH FOR GIRLS Macon, Georgia 1961 Contents Dedication Administration Classes Organizations Sports Ads And this is Miller... . not a building of glass and stone, but nine hundred seventy-five girls. This is the Miller where tradition and culture constantly fight the crazes and fads of the younger generation, this is the Miller familiar to all, and this is the Miller we, the staff of the 1960-61 MILLER-LANIER, have portrayed in this, your annual. Yes, Miller is girls . . . girls overjoyed at the Beta Assembly when the new members were tapped . . . girls buried under avalanches of books . . . girls laboring over test tubes, foreign accents, and typewriters . . . girls squealing and laughing as they make good use of the GEA holiday by going to the fair . . . girls studying in classrooms, in halls, on the steps, and in cars .. . girls sketching on the campus in the crisp autumn weather . . . girls filled with youthful exuberance, reveling at the Sock-Hop . . . girls excited but envious as sponsors are chosen and buttons appear . . . girls loyal and true, entering into school projects and activities with cheerful enthusiasm To show Miller completely would be an impossible task. It would take an immeasurable amount of time, space, and copy. But here, between the covers of the MILLER-LANIER, we, the staff, have attempted to present Miller as we saw it during the year 1960-61. And this is Miller . And this is one whom we love For again Miller girls have ded- icated their annual to you, Miss Lucile Carswell. A proof of all that you have meant to those sen- iors, fortunate to have known you in class work or in activities in- side and outside the school. We learned from you things of worth-while value the study of English as a tool and a source of pleasure and enrichment. In you we have admired that sincere in- terest and concern you have for people. In you we have seen the meaning and depth of true friend- ship. From you we have learned the importance of being ourselves and developing ourselves to the full- est. We have seen the endless love and enthusiasm you have for your work, your church, your friends, your family, and your hobbies. And so, we the class of 1961, have appreciated and grown to love in you the qualities and char- acteristics as have so many of your other students. We have honored you by dedicating this book to you, Miss Carswell! And One whom we shall always remember— To Mr. H. S. Lasseter, principal, Miller means “his girls.” He was a teacher at Lanier High School, but when the new school for girls was completed in 1931, he became her first and has been her only principal. He taught many of the teachers now on his faculty and because of him—his teachings and his principles—and his faculty, the school has kept her traditions, rec- ord, and reputation set years ago. Her graduates have done well in college and in business and in their many varied professions; in every field they have brought honors to their school. They have learned well from lessons, teachings, and ideals given them at Miller, Ma- con’s oldest senior high school for girls. And those who Mrs. Julia Carver, Mrs. Lucille London, and Mrs. Jean Wilson enjoy the use of “George” in the science department. jmin ’ Miss Addie Funderburke, Miss Lucile Carswell, and Mrs. Ann Holmes teach Senior English, while Miss Yonah Hurt, Miss Catherine Jones, Mrs. Eliza- beth Miller, and Miss Mary Alfriend have Sophomores and Juniors, Mrs. Elizabeth Poe Clark, Mrs. Sue Moss, and Miss Geraldine Jackson tell Mrs. Jacque James, guidance counselor, helps a us all about Latin, French, and Spanish. Every girl dreams of being a senior—and every girl looks forward to senior privileges and honors. The seniors of ’61 honored Curry by electing her as president, Dale as vice-president, and Ginny as secre- tary-treasurer. These directors—Lynda, Judy, Regina, Mary Anne, and Phyllis have really worked with the officers in selecting invitations and rings, in planning class meetings, and in encouraging class spirit and com- petition.
