Participating          in          the          impressive          program          were          Cadet          Colonel          Bill          George,          Colonel          Vernon          “Catfish”         Smith,          Lanier          graduate          and          All-American          football          star,          Miss          Miller,          Mr.          Swann,          and          George          Hart,          Student          Council         president.         Lanter          receives          “Frances         Dr.          William          F.          Quillian,          distinguished          graduate          of          1931,          Presi-          Guests          from          near          and          far          were          representatives          of          schools          receiving         dent          of          Randolph          Macon          College,          addressed          Lanierians          and          Lanier          the          Bellamy          Award          in          other          years:          C.          L.          Gordon,          Tulsa,          Okla-         alumni          and          friends          homa;          Nancy          Pritchard,          Portsmouth,          Virginia;          Lynn          Hunter,         Indianapolis,          Indiana;          Owen          A.          Basil,          Annapolis,          Maryland;          and         Wanda          Rose,          Pantego,          North          Carolina         Senior          High          School         October          13,          1958         Lanier          received          this         honor          because          of          out-         standing          alumni,          com-         munity          relations,          and         R.O.T.C          and          aca-         demic          programs          and         is          the          only          Georgia         recipient          of          the         j         award         ‘         Sas          FQ         Members          of          the          Lanier          High          School          Auxiliary          entertained          at          a          reception          in          the          school          lobby,          Above          are          Mrs.         C. Johnson,          one          of          the          hostesses,          and          Lanierians          Gary          Purdy,          David          Geiger,          Jere          Smith,          and          Tommy         Richardson         Gecllamy          Flag          pAAward         Everyone          joined          in          congratulating          Lanier.          In          a          huge          scrapbook          were          displayed          congratulatory          letters          from          dignitaries         all          over          the          nation. MARK          A.          SMITH         1893-1958         Dr.          Mark          Smith,          superintendent          of          Bibb          County          Schools          from          1941          to          1958,          was          truly          outstanding—a          man          to          be          re-         membered          and          respected.          As          an          administrator          and          educator,          he          was          recognized          and          honored          by          those          who          had          known         him          and          worked          with          him.          As          one          vitally          interested          in          civic          activities,          he          was          admired          and          loved.          People          knew          Mark         Smith.         He          was          a          man          of          deep          convictions          and          a          man          of          courage          who          dared          to          be          true          to          what          he          believed          possible          and          best.         He          was          far-sighted          in          his          vision,          but          immediate          and          demanding          in          his          expectations          and          actions.          His          appearance          was          strik-         ing;          his          manner,          gracious          and          friendly;          his          personality,          definite          and          dominant.         Varied          and          sincere          were          his          interests.          To          those          interests          he          gave          of          himself          unselfishly          and          worked,          not          only          for          boys          and         girls          in          schools          and          clubs,          but          also          with          adults          in          his          church          and          in          his          civic          clubs.          Surely          the          memory          of          a          life          well-         spent          and          useful          will          never          die.
