He climbed, for days We watched him. For years he climbed, We watched . . . And laughed. Centuries later, He neared the top, The laughing stopped. We imagined him Smiling, laughing back. Then he fell, at ouxifeet, Still smiling. The next day, The village began to climb P. W. P age 146 I f X 1, v 4 A A Letter From Mr. Harper June 1970 Dear Fellow Centralites , This has been a great yearn- great in many respects. It marks our last year as a group entity. This is our last graduating class. I am reminded of the French story of La Derniere Classen be- fore'Germany once took over Alsace and Lorraine. That story was on a sad note. Ours is on a happy note, for we have a proud past. This location was the first to provide academic education in tlfe city of Auburn when it was yet a village. This will be a last location within the city, for our academic future is in Fleming. This year is also a commencement. Many of us will look forward to wider horizons in the new school with greater advantages. We will look back upon a family individualityw as a pleasant re- membrance propelling us. into a greater future. This is our shining hour - our finest yearbook - a time of pride. Like an astronomical nova our school no longer will be seen as such, but also like the n'ova will still be present in an eternal orbit with a past filled with bright memories, pride of accomplishments and springboard to the future. For me, as for you, this has been one of the great things in life. Goodbye, Central, and may God be with your futures so that you may always face the sunrise with the gentle wind to your back. Your sincere friend, ' MKMMZ Millard R. Harter Principal Time is such an integral part of our daily living. We rush about, so concerned with a minute by minute timetable that we fail to appreciate some of the most important events in our lives. When we finally pause for a breath, the moment is past, the magic has gone. We may reminisce for an in- stant, but in looking back, all that is left is a fleeting shadow and a faint whisper . . . Eventually this memory dies. ln the torrential flood of events the past slips into virtual oblivion. We say, We must live for the present - what's past is past and what's to come will come. But, alas, all too soon the present is past and the future present . . And we go on this way into infinity. In dedicating a yearbook the time element must be considered, for a yearbook is nothing more than a record of events associated with our youth, and a whole lifetime stretches before youth . . . a lifetime of todays, tomorrows and yesterdays. Therefore, it is with due respect to all that we, the editors, dedicate this final edition of Mercury to the past, present and future - the infinite passage of time. Her ex- perience and counsel have helped many senior projects reach their goals success- fully. A memorial is a commemoration serving to keep alive the memory of a person. Al- , though Sandy has been dead for three years, her memory still lingers in the minds and hearts of those who knew her. Sandy had a subtle air of wit and humor that surpassed that of many. Thus, we find it fitting to re- print a section of William Wordsworth's Ode On The Intimations of Immortality From Recollections of Early Childhood as our tribute to Sandy Scharra. Then sing, ye Birds, sing, sing a joyous song! And let the young Lambs bound As to the tabor's sound! We in thought will join your throng, Ye that pipe and ye that play, Ye that through your hearts to-day Feel the gladness of the May! What though the radi ance which was once so bright Be now for ever taken from my sight, Though nothing can bring back the hour Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flowerg We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind, In the primal sympathy Which having been must ever beg In the soothing thoughts that spring Out of human suffering, In the faith that looks through death, In years that bring the philosophic mind. v. 'ii RETRCJ SPECT Histor The Class of 1970 is the last class to graduate from Central High School and as this is the last issue of the Mercury year- book, the staff felt it appropriate to incorporate a special section concerning the history of the schools on this site. This retrospect section is a pictorial chronical of such aspects of school life as classes, organizations and athletics, and includes pictures of the buildings, principals, and some faculty members. The first building to occupy the site was the Auburn Academy, which opened in 1812. The land had been do- nated by one Robert Dill, and private funds were used to finance the construction. ,Of white-painted brick, the structure measured sixty by twenty feet, and consisted of the main three-story building with a two-story west wing. The entrance was on the south, and the third story en- closed living quarters and the assembly roomg above that was a cupola with a bell. Discipline was strict, and pun- ishment often consisted of shutting up the disobedient in a closet or solitary confinement in a deep hole in the wall left by the builders. The fn'st floor housed the primary department. Be- sides the grades, there were the standard academic cours- es, such as Latin and Creek. Science, modern languages and mathematics were also taught. During the 19th cen- tury, considerable emphasis was placed on the study of the classics and mathematics. In 1816, the building was burned, and for the next decade the school was held in makeshift accommoda- tions. A new building was constructed on the original site in 1827. ln 1850 and 1866, the public school system was or- ganized more fully, and city superintendents were put in charge. The High School was first organized in 1866, in No. 4-, North Street School, with Warren Higley as prin- cipal and a registration of seventy-three pupils. Mean- while, the trustees of the Academy transferred the prop- erty to the Board of Educationg the High School was moved there in January of 1867, and was thereafter called the Auburn Academic High School. The first class to graduate after the new High School was organized was the Class of 1868, which consisted of two members. A crying need for more space resulted in construction of a much larger brick and sandstone building just west of the old 1927 building. The new Auburn Academic High School building was first occupied in 1888, with William P. Thompson as principal and a registration of 358. The first class graduating from the building was that of 1889, and numbered 32. The 1888 building was a three-story structure stand- ing well back from Garden Street, the central entrance being adorned with heavy columns of red sandstone. The boys' entrance was on the eastg the girls' on the west. The basement housed the physics and chemistry laboratories. The ground floor held classrooms, the second floor con- tained the boys' and girls' study halls and the small li- brary, while the third floor had the assembly room. Prior to the fire of 1903, the platform of the assembly room was located on the north side of the room, afterwards, on the south side. Starting in 1898, various classes began to contribute memorial stained-glass windows. Later on a pipe organ was installed, the money being raised by stu- dent gifts. With the construction of the 1888 building, the old Academy building was used as a Grammar School. The new institution was a step in the progression toward the Junior High to come later on. The High School as then organized included the four upper grades, and about 1895 had an enrollment of about 4400. 1912 COACH DOC REID From the beginning of the AAHS the societies were very popular. For many years, societies such as the K.A. and the A.R. were the center of all the social and literary activities of the school. Other lesser societies were in ex- istence, and it is interesting to note that the colors of the Mu Alpha Sigma fM.A.S.J society, founded in, 1874, were maroon and white. Previous to 1897, athletics did not receive encourage- ment and! or support from the Board or the faculty of the school. ln the early 20th century, however, athletics be- came an important part of the school curriculum. THE MANDOLIN CLUB - 1907 On July 17, 1903, a fire which originated in the Bar- ber Shoe Factory on the south side of Garden Street spread to the High School roof and demolished the As- sembly Room. ln 1908 an addition was made at the rear, this change involving new fireproof stairways both inside and out. The 1908 addition stands today as the old building of Central High School. The curriculum' began to see changes. Greek was dropped and Latin lost some of its former position. Mod- ern languages found increased interest, more time was devoted to English, drawing and domestic science were introduced, and gradually commercial courses came in to meet the needs of those entering business. ln 1920, an organizational change was made. The eighth grade and the freshman year were united into the Junior High, which was held in the former Grammar School building. About 1930 the peak of some 1800 High School stu- dents was reached, owing to the state requirement of age limit, this maximum resulting in a very crowded build- ing. For some time plans had been considered for a more comprehensive system of high schools, beginning with the Senior, now East, High School. This building was completed and opened in the fall of 1932. The 1888 building was used for a time as a junior high school. The old Grammar School Building was torn down about 1932, it had served as a school building for over 100 years. Two other high schools were planned, and to make room for the new Central High School the old 1888 building was torn down. The new building was ar- ranged to form a unit with the retained 1908 building. The Board of Education in the meantime had bought ad- ditional land on Garden. and North Streets which provid- ed more room for a playground. Both West and Central were financed in part by WPA funds, as was the East High stadium. Central High School was dedicated on October 8, 19440, with West being dedicated the fol- lowing day. In Central's thirty years as a high school, both curricu- lum and extra-curricular activities have expanded considerably. More and more clubs have been organized, athletics have become highly specialized, and curriculum has changed to meet the needs of a changing world. With the closing of the doors this June, Central High will no longer exist. The future of the buildings, of the site itself, is at this point uncertain. Perhaps the 1940 building will be retained as a grade school, or perhaps the site of the 159 year educational tradition will be abandoned, left to sleep between the leaves of yellowing books and aging memories. ACADEMY Historical references have it that this is the 1927 Academy - Academy II. However, some contend that this is a sketch of Academy I. The tree-covered edifice at right furnishes little evidence pro or con. Evidence supporting the lat- ter theory lies in the cupola fbell towerj on the building in the sketch. Academy II apparently had no cupola, at least not like the one in the sketch. uildings In the 158-9 years that a school building has occupied this site, there has been a total of five different buildings. The first Auburn Academy was built in 1812 and destroyed by fire in 1816. For the next 11 years school was held at the Theological Seminary and a warehouse. In 1827, a second Academy was com- pleted. This building was later used as the Grammar School and then the Junior High. It was demolished in 1932. In 1888 the AAHS building was opened. It served as Auhurn's only high school until the construction of the Senior fEastj High School in 1932. It served for a while as a Junior High School, then was torn down to make way for the new Central High building. An addition to the AAHS was made in 1908, and it was retained to be joined with the 194-0 building. ACADEMY II-GRAMMAR SCHOOL The caption for this photo said The Old Academy - I878. ' ASSEMBLY ROOM AFTER THE FIRE - 1903 On the night of July 17, 1903, a fire which started in the Barber Shoe Factory on Garden Street com- pletely destroyed the roof and Assembly Room of the High School. The records, library pictures and appa- ratus were saved, but all the memorial windows were destroyed. 'T-EF ASSEMBLY ROOM IN 1888 The Assembly Room was located on the third floor of AAHS. Here every morning the opening ex- ercises were held, prominent speakers lectured and performances were given. L- REBUILT ASSEMBLY ROOM - 1904 The Assembly Room was greatly improved while it was being restored. The class memorial windows were replaced by the Board and a new piano was in- stalled and dedicated. CLASS MEMORIAL WINDOWS For a few years, the Senior Classes made a practice of designing and purchasing me- morial windows for the Assembly Room. These windows were stained glass, and were inscribed with such things as class mottoes and dates. All of the windows prior to 1904 were destroyed in the fire, but were re- placed by the Board of Education. The win- dows shown here were those omenases' of 1909 and 1910. When the AAHS was tom down, the windows were saved and can be seen in the main foyer of Central High today. Later on, the classes switched to con- tributing to an organ fund. -1-ia LAB - 1932 MAIN FOYER OF CHS STAGE This was the chemistry and physics Looking t0wai??7gymnaSium En 1932 h - lab offhe AAHS' It was fePuted to have trances to the Auditorium are at left, bl R S Of of the Stage m the Assam' been ln the basement of the building. DANCING CLUB - 1947 The dancing club was organized to instruct the students in the art of dancing, for dances were one of the prime sources of entertainment for them. LIBRARY CLUB - 1931 Members of the library club were given specific jobs in the library, such as sorting and cataloguing materials. STUDENT COUNCIL - 1954- The student council has concerned itself with the interests of the student body, and has had a lot of success in bettering the students' plight. SCIENCECLUB - 1965 The science club was formed for those who were interested in exploring the field of science outside the classroom. 9I TRACK - 1889 The first track team was started in the late 1880,s. Field days were held and those who made the best records entered the Inter-Academic Field Days of New York State. Interest in this department lagged during the 1890's but was revived again about 1900. Sports Prior to 1897, athletics received little support or encouragement from the Board or Faculty of the school. In fact, the teams there were not composed strictly of High School boys. Sports were played in a rough and unorganized manner, and often the necessary equipment had to be appropriated from whatever was avail- able. ln 1897, one of the teachers assumed the direction of athletics, and from then on athletics was an integral part of school life. One of the chief problems facing the early athletic organizations was the lack of facilities. The AAHS had no gym and no suitable outdoor facilities. Therefore, the gift of the YMCA field by the Misses Willard was gratefully accepted. FOOTBALL - 1895 The frst team was organized in the High School in September, 1889. Forma- tion of the team received considerable opposition and discouragement, but the sport was most popular with the students. The old time brutality went out with the introduction of strict rules and regulations. During the first years, only a couple of games were played per season. HOCKEY - 1903 ' A hockey team was organized in 1897, but as the field of operation was un- certain, the existence of the team was not stable. 92 X 1 BASEBALL - 1911 Baseball had an intermittent existence but no steady orga- nization was effected until l897, since which time the game has held a steady growth. in TENNIS - 1928 Nine competitive games were played in 1928. Only one was lost, to CBA, and there was one no-score game. Although not one of the most popular sports, tennis has held its own over the years. GIRLS'S BASKETBALL - 1921 The girl's first basketball team was formed in 1920, but got off to a poor start. In 1921, however, the turnout was betterg two leagues of four teams each were formed. GOLF - 1930 The existence of a golf team was touch and go over the years, but it had its fol- lowing. BASKETBALL - 1947 Basketball has long been one of the most popular sports, its competition has been avidly followed by the public as well as the. students. -' K. ' 93 ,. Q V 51' ,N- 1. In particular, the staff wishes to thank Mr. Harter for his unending patience and continued moral support. The successful completion of the retrospect section owes much to the staff at Seymour Library, Mrs. Ruth Wilson, Miss Gertrude Cora, Mr. Leslie Luther, and Mrs. Evelyn Burlew. Mr. John Cavanaugh, our photographer, and Mr. Richard lre- land, our publisher representative, have given us much needed technical advice for which we are very grateful. We also wish to offer special thanks to our advisors and parents without whom this yearbook would not exist. -X. -'.X , -L' :,:,X,X- X .
