This could be done by removing the causes which lead a child to endanger his well-being and that of others. Lack of satisfactory recreational facilities is a leading cause of juvenile delin- quency. Youths are thus encouraged to roam the streets looking for something to do. Because they are alone and bored, they form street gangs, and these gangs turn to crime for excitement. Law officials become their hated enlemies. ln contempt of the law, these youths continue their offenses. If there were more and better recreational sites where young persons could learn to become respect- able citizens, numbers of these children would be omitted from the list of the nation's lawless youths. Another major cause of delinquency is objectionable literature, and leading all other types as the most harmful is the comic book. Every month about 20,000,000 comic books which are devoted strictly to crime, horror, or murder are published. From these so-called comics, which present ways to harm people, to conceal evidence, and to evade detection, youths often obtain ideas for committing crimes. The stories and the characters pictured in these comics may not be fully understood by the readers. Thus, instead of the readers' realizing that Crime does not pay, they may feel that, unlike the fiction characters, they can succeed in committing criminal offenses without being detected. If the harmful comic books were removed from the market, delinquency could be reduced to a mini- mum. Since the teenagers would not constantly face these cheap books of crime, they would be encouraged to turn to books of better standing. In many parts of juvenile delinquency. who tries them just further delinquency. which he has fallen is not possible for health and make it does not have the life will be destroye d because he has become a victim of narcotics prevent the sale of drugs Narcotics Drug Act which of existing laws are delinquency caused by the the United States, narcotics have become a major cause for Because narcotics are habit forming, many a young person, to see what they are like becomes an addict and turns to Why? Because, in order to secure the powerful drug to prey, the victim must pay high prices to dope peddlers. It him to pay these high prices, since narcotics affect his impossible for him to have steady employment. Since he necessary money, the addict turns to stealing. His whole . ln order to the Uniform enforcement a decline of to youngsters by peddlers, more laws, like regulates the use of narcotics, and stricter needed. Then and then only will there be use of narcotics. both lt is very important to realize, however, that just because a young person faces many causes which can lead to juvenile delinquency, he does not have to become involved. He can build up strong enough will power to resist evil by knowing the causes which lead to trouble and therefore what to avoid and by constantly practicing what he has been taught is right. lf he builds this strong moral character, he can be sure of keeping his name from the list of juvenile delinquents. It is therefore necessary for us all to know the causes of delinquency and their cure. The causes must be recognized and challenged and the remedies applied. If we fail today, two million boys and girls will come into conflict with the authorities by l960. With the help of the already established agencies and with the cooperation of all, delinquency can be reduced to such an extent that it will be known only as a danger of the past and not as a threat to the future of this great nation. Today is the two-hundreth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and it is also the twentieth reunion of that fabulous Class of 1956 of Central High School, Auburn, New York. The members of this world- renowned class are gathered on the roof of the new Central High School, where they will blast off for celestial Mercury. You Are There. Ladies and Gentlemen, you lucky, lucky people, I now turn you over to Donna Williams and Cynthia Saphara, our star reporters, also on the roof of the school, who will introduce to you the participants in this spectacular trip that is about to be made by the Class of '56 in the rocket ship, Hot Mercury. The ship is to be piloted by that famous aviator, Peter Chennault Borza. He is here on the roof of the newly-built Auburn Central High, which was designed by the master architect, Peter Michaelangelo Sikora in his inimitable style. It was com- pleted only two years ago and has since been dedicated to this incomparable Class of 1956. Their record of successful achievements has yet to be equaled. Come in, Donna and Cynthia. Cynthia: Hi, Everybody! lt's a beautiful morning up here on the roof top. Zero hour will be at 8:00 a.m., and we are expected to reach the planet Mercury by 12:00 noon today. Every one of the Class of '56 will be going to Mercury for the celebration of the twentieth reunion. The plot revolves around movie-mad Cindy Collins convincingly portrayed by Joanna Tokarz, who comes to visit her cousin Jane Cutler, vividly characterized by Patricia Kachurak, from Deucyville, Iowa. Neither Jane nor her friend, Sally, pertly played by Ann Ryan, has a date for the J-S dance, and Cindy convinces them that she can trap the boys Jim and George, ably enacted by Fritz Homick and John Zamniak, into an invitation by pretending that Jane is ill, and that Sally has a secret admirer. She persuades the girls that her schemes will work because the same situations occur in the movies. But all her plans go awry when Sally's cousin, Marcia, whose sophisticated portrayal is smartly dramatized by Marion Kowatch, from New York, arrives and immediately tries to annex all the eligible boy friends. Poor Cindy's wild schemes fail miserably, and she almost loses her own boy friend Elroy, enviably enacted by David Bishop. It is only when she realizes that her own brains and honesty are better weapons than make-believe plots that she is able to solve her own and her friends' problems. The adults had their problems, too. Mr. Cutler, distinguishedly played by Tom Stopyra, and his neighbor, Mr. Ahern, humorously brought to life by William Kufs, both aspired to win the grand prize for their peonies. Mrs. Cutler, maturely dramatized by Donna Williams, was constantly striving to keep peace between her explosive husband and her teenage daughter, Agnes, comically characterized by Blandyna Pelc, sides with the teenagers while she tries out endless recipes for the million-dollar baking contest. Mrs. Tilton, dominantly played by Marie Jones, and her daughters, Rose, appeal- ingly presented by Donna Komanecky, and Josie, devilishly enacted by Helena Maye, add to the general confusion, and Marilyn, vivaciously dramatized by Marilyn McCarthy, finally has to give up her chase for Elroy. Everyone goes to the dance, thanks to the appearance of a very charming Air Force Lieutenant, Clifford Northup. Our student managers, Angie Lolocano and Cynthia Saphara, did a wonderful iob in checking all the details that are necessary in a three-act play. We will forget our history, grow rusty at the typewriter, grow old and gray, but we'll never forget our Senior play, Strictly Formal. iff,-Aera Barbara Bommersbach Judith Gratton Helen Georges Sandra Gernak Winitred Keogan Roberta Killian Barbara Kowalczyk Patricia Lodor Rosemary McGrath Beverly O'Connor Josephine Penna Judith Regets Louise Ruetsch Eleanor Tkacz Shirley Wellington 756' uly C 110112112 lffee Mrs. Leslie R. A few times each year the Student Council sponsors competitive entertainment through seventh bell games between certain grades. These games are supported by the students, who cheer for their special idols, and by the teachers who consider them a wholesome means of competitive sportsmanship as well as a good means of raising money for other school activities. The main social event is the annual Sno-Ball Dance. Princes and princesses representing each grade from seventh to eleventh make up the royal court. The main attraction is the crowning of the king and queen, elected by the people at the dance from among three girls and three boys previously nominated by the senior class. This year a long desired dream of the Council has been fulfilled. For years each president of the Council has striven to obtain a school store for the students. This dream finally materialized through the special efforts of Tom McNabb, last year's president, and John Zamniak, this year's president. This important business venture, capably managed by Patricia Scott and Joan Westcott, has eliminated student unpreparedness in school supplies. Typing paper, hand notebooks, notebook paper, reinforcements, ball point pens, rulers, pencils, and erasers are but a few of the varied articles kept in stock at this store. The Student Council, guided by Mr. Hilbert, its advisor, supported by other members of the faculty, and made effective through student participation in its activities, continues to be a most effective means of school government. The chorus presented both a Thanksgiving and a Christmas program. One thing that everyone will remember specially is the procession. The members ot the chorus, wearing white blouses and dark skirts, walked slowly down the two aisles of the auditorium. Each member carried a lighted candle which she placed in a candlelabra on the stage. Then on the platform, the group formed a broken semicircle around the manger scene of the play. Eleven senior girls making up a selected choral group sang the sacred number Christmas Star. They were Joan Lombardo, Joan Schlegel, Sandra Gernak, Barbara Bommersbach, Blandyna Pelc, Marion Kowatch, Rosemary McGrath, Louise Reutsch, Lucille Talbot, Rita Major, and Donna Komanecky. Donna Komanecky also sang as a solo Bach-Gounod's Ave Maria. After the chorus had sung several other appropriate selections, they, continuing to sing, led the whole student body in a quiet and impressive recessional from the auditorium. It was a beautiful conclusion to an assembly that the school will long remember. ln May there is to be an All-School Spring Concert in East High School. A boys' chorus is being organized, and already the Ninth Grade Girls' Chorus is preparing Where In the World But America and Lollytoodum, both Fred Waring arrange- ments. The Senior High Girls' Chorus is preparing He's Got the Whole World ln His Hands, I Wish I Wuz, Were You There, and You'll Never Walk Alone. g .mx 1 ,M Q5 'FV bs 'yy Ea sk.. :S-'- '1 .-5-ii igzgrazy CSXJ President ,....,... .,,,,.,,., B LANDYNA PELC Vice President ,,... .... This change is appreciated by the entire student body who can thus gain access to the library more easily. With the sun streaming in through its win- dows, the library has a cheerful air which encourages study and aids in the appreciation of good literature. We were all very happy to welcome our new librarian, Miss Blackmar. The students have found her help immeasurable. Under Miss Blackmar's able instruc- tion, a group of girls have helped in the library, learning thus the many pleasant aspects of working in a school library. Any girl from the ninth to the twelfth grade is eligible for membership on the library staff. The staff performs such tasks as checking books in and out of the library, shelving books, doing assistant librarian work with the library classes, and doing the other iobs that need to be done in the library. The girls enioy working in the library and are gaining valuable experience in library work. , unzbr JYQIQOI' CSOCHQQ Front row, left to right: Richard Hodder, Virginia Dekoschak, Walda Rogers, Theodore Tarby, Joseph Solon, Neila Hunter, Patricia Sennett.
