CLASS SONG To the Melody of Auld Lang Syne Oh, Central High, we bid adieu To you with heads held highg Our voices swell in fond farewell To school days passing by. Oh, we the Class of Fifty-Four, Now joyously proclaim The friendships made that will not fade But in our hearts remain. Throughout the play, the attention of the audience was held by the surprising plot and splendid performance of the cast. Dorothy Wylie, as Lcxie, portrayed a young teen-ager who, like most young people, had troubles with her love life. lieally serious about a boy for the hrst time, she found many obstacles to prevent her from getting acquainted with her soldier pen pal, Bill Henderson Hon Whalenj, who had come for a weekend visit. Lexie's attractive girl friend, Arden Daly, played by Joy Buonocore, did her best to win Bill away from Lexie. Nola Fleming tHelen Zamniakl, Lexie's beautiful actress mother, further compli- cated her daughteris life by announcing that Lexie would have to play the part of a nine-year-old child called Bunny. Mrs. Holden, a movie producer, played by Geraldine Odrzywolski, was coming to the Fleming home. Nola couldn't admit that she had three grown children, for she'd never get a new contract if she did. Muriel, played by the poised Mary ,lane Caruana, was excellent in her role as the older sister and then as the maid during Mrs. Holden's visit. Making the situation more humorous was a portrayal of the handyman by Matt Fleming tBill Solomonj, the older brother. Mary Jo, the girl next door, was played by Joan Kuter. Assisted by Matt, she tried to stop Arden from taking Bill away from Lexie. This also added to the humor when Mary Jo came in as HSusie Smith, Bunny's little playmate. Complicated situations in the play were smoothed over and settled with the aid of the understanding Aunt Lydia lMargarct Peasej, who had taken care of the Flem- ing children while Kola furthered her movie career. tTurn to Page 31-2 -I 32 1- Av we il L' LET ME GROW UP CAST OF CHARACTERS Lexlc I-11-mmg .,,,..,,,,.,,,.,.,,,,.,,,,.,,.,.,...., ,, DOROTHY WYYLIE Murivl Fl:-ming .,,... Both were extremely angry at being deceived and prepared to leave. Nolais timely entrance with a delicious cake that she had baked stopped them. Nola, who had finally realized that she was sacrificing her childrenis happiness, turned to the role of mother instead of that of actress. Everything turned out for the best, and Lexie finally won the love of her soldier pen pal, Bill. Because of Mrs. Page's tireless efforts and the hard work of the cast, stage man- agers, and other assistants, Let Me Crow Upv, as all who saw it will agree, was a huge success. --1 34 1- JEANETTE MOSLEY D 0 sf vt . PAT FARRINGTON The library staff is made up of girls from the ninth through the twelfth grades. Since Miss Ellis choses girls who are busy with many other activities, the staff has not had any formal meetings or social activities. Some people may wonder what a library staff is and why we have one. A library staff is a group of girls who spend at least one period a week in the library. Their duties are varied: sometimes checking books in and out, sometimes shelving books, and sometimes reading shelves tinspecting the shelves one after another to make sure that each book is in its proper placej, sometimes filing catalog cards, pasting pockets. yes, even dusting. Sometimes Miss Ellis leaves a girl in charge of the library while she goes on necessary errands about the building. At other times, we do the errands for her. Our library is on the third floor, miles away from the large study hall in 119. Even though it is so far away, the seniors have made use of it for research work on their term papers. Mrs. Oliver's Family Relations class have frequently borrowed books on personality development and good modern social manners, a subject which is also the basis for an English book report in one class. Needless to say, pupils in many other subjects find in the library the answers to their questions. Miss Ellis ordered a variety of interesting books for both the .lunior and Senior High this year. The students have been making good use of these additions. Barbara Malenich Carol Jenner ...I 39 1, MERCURY MURMURSH STAFF CO-EDITORS .................. The Maroons have taken a permanent Central Interscholastic Conference Trophy in basketball by adding another Central Interscholastic Conference title. The first string was composed of three Central High players, Stan Fritz, Fddie Fagan. and Jerry Secaur. Fritz was the high scorer for the maroons. The basketball team also went to the sectionals, where they met and defeated a strong Central Square team. In the second round the Maroons met a strong Fayetteville Manlius team and lost a heart- breaker by four points. The basketball season ended with Basketball Sports Night where Mike Antonik, a freshman from Central High, placed second in a City-wide Foul Shooting Contest. The winter sports season ended with the annual Sports Night. The Central High students showed a great variety of skills. The junior high boys put on a very interest- ing performance with about twenty boys skipping rope to music. As an added attrac- tion. a group of girls, who began tumbling this year, showed advanced skill in doing rolls and flips. The ever popular square dancing ended the show with the boys and the girls swinging partners and having plenty of fun. JERRY SECAIQR STAN FRITZ -I 49 1- CHEERLEADERS Buck row: P. Kane, J. Pfeifer, J.
