Mrs. Leslie R. Page In presenting The Leavenworth Casev on March 10. the Class of '53 did something unique. lt presented a mystery. the first one produeed by Central High students. Mrs. Page. our marvelous direetor. ehose the east. the stage managers. and all the others who helped with the play. No one will ever forget our patient Mrs. Page saying, Ann. slow downg Tom Leader. leave your sweater alone. and it's gforgeti not 'forgitlg Kose. speak louder. and it's 'polieei not lpulieef Bob Colvin. don't forget your eaneg Yera. keep your aer-ent: 'liom Hose. stand straight: Dolores. sereamg Hob Riley. don't point: Marilyn. yellg Sid. grab the inspeetorg Lorraine. don't forget your servantsg Mary Jane. be extra sweetg and Lita. be more limp. Another thing we ean not forget is how Betty Donohue and Shirley Cermano. our wonderful stage managers. were eonstantly being called and kept on the go by both Mrs. Page and the east. Then when opening night arrived, the big. never-to-be-forgotten suspense back stage was. Can we. or ean we not, hold the audience? If at the end of the first aet they are still being held. ours will be a good show throughoutf' will anyone ever be able to forget the clever and well-acted lovers' quarrel between Thomas and Kate. the humor of Molly, the dignity of Truman Harwell and the surprise of his being the murderer. and the way lnspeetor Cryee carried on the interrogation with the helpfulness of his assistant. Sally? llow thrilling it was to feel the shock of the audienee when out of nowhere liverett asked Eleanor to marry himg to hear them sigh when Mary greeted her husband. Henry Claveringg to observe their curiosity about Hrs. Each student had to meet certain requirements before being admitted to it. The Little Symphony is intended to help its members to play more advanced music than would be possible for the whole orchestra and also to give them an opportunity for more musical enjoyment, since they may play with both the Orchestra and the Little Symphony. Mr. Harold Henderson is a very inspiring director, and we have learned much under his direction. The following are the Central High members of the Little Symphony: Jane Carden - viola Tina Homick - violin Marion Carroll - violin Robert Riley - trombone Phyllis Curtis - violin Thomas Rose - trombone Christine Haight - oboe Samuel Scozzari - trombone MARION CARROLL il 37 1... The staff is composed of girls in the grades nine through twelve. Each girl in those grades who wishes to be on the library staff signs her name on a paper that Miss Bertha A. Ellis. the librarian, sends around, then Miss Ellis schedules each girl to a period in the library. Some girls are fortunate enough to help a class. By that. I mean. a few of the girls are in the library when the seventh and eighth grades are taught the proper uses of the books and the library. We had a social meeting with refreshments. to select the library olllcers. All of the staff members participate, and any one of them can be chosen as an officer. Miss Ellis presided and we all had fun. A special interest is the Korean Doll. which is in our library. It was one of several dolls that were given to the children of America by the children of Korea, in exchange for American dolls. She was given to the Auburn Academic High School many years ago. She stands in a glass covered box, so she won't get dusty. Her dress is made of flowered crepe silk, and two petticoats are made of silk. The dress is lined just as the Korean clothes are lined. Her hair is short and straight. with bangs across her forehead. The hair of the doll is real hair. The head. arms. legs and feet are made from bisque, a type of pottery, and she has a cloth body. It was an all-Central show presented hy both boys and girls. The first act was girls' relays ss a melee of raeing. yelling players. They concluded their activities with a Skin the Snakeu relay. The second aet was a series of junior high hoys' all-sports relays. Elements of diffeernt sports were ineluded - - every- thing from hasketliall to golf and even swimming. Next eame stunts and tumhling lay the girls - a head twist. erieket walks. handstands. and monkey rolls. The seventh and eighth grade girls and lioys joined forees to demonstrate their skill in a series of three square dam-es. the first time for this aetiyity together in a sports program here. Then the hoys took over. Two handhall semi-hnals. two ping pong champion- ship games. and an exhihition game of shuttlehoop were played simultaneously. Senior SOCCPT emor Dodgeball GIRLS' SPORTS The many girls who participate in and enjoy the varied sports program wel- comed another return of the physical education season. The first sport, in class and in intramurals, was soccer. Some of the teams had a chance to experience the thrill of playing in the wideopen spaces of the boys' field. Next on the agenda was dodgeball. Many games were quickly and well played in both the Junior and the Senior Leagues. Then the volleyball season came, with many exciting and close games played in both divisions. The battle-cry was heard, Let's go, team! Set ,em up! In gym class we received instruction in dancing fboth social and squarel, ping pong, tumbling, and archery, as well as in the major team sports. All the intramurals were played after school because of the one-session school program, which allowed no other time. These games were suspended briefly while intensive practice for Sports Night was in progress. As for other athletic events, Central was well represented by sixteen girls at a Play Day in Oswego. llt is said that these girls were the noisiest ones on the busil Two basketball games, ping pong doubles and singles games, and bowling contests were played with the Oswego girls, but not in competition with them. Finally arrived the best season of the year, according to the basketball fiends. Eighteen teams battled for top position in that sport. It is planned to have a series of softball games to conclude this season of en- joyable intramural contests and gym classes. Last on the pro- grain was an exhibition on the parallel bars by Bill Coleman, Louie Lombardi and 'liom Leader. 'lihis actixitv is not a part of the school program because there is not a set of bars belonging to the high schools. Each boy perlorined expertly a diftieult routine on them, including backward and forward rolls, hand stands, shoulder stands, and various dismounts. So that the audience could get into the act, the evening was concluded with dancing by ext-ryone who wished to prolong a Sports Night of fun and excellent entertainment.
