ERODELPHIAN Delph, which is the youngest literary club at Central, has as its chief aim the promotion of literary knowledge among its members. One important tradition of Delph is the passing down of the same gold locket to each president. The big event of Delph's year is the chosing of the Delph Darling. Elected by popular vote, she is revealed at an impressive ceremony. Each member participates in at least one program. In this manner each girl is given a chance to become an active member. Our opener had been delayed three weeks because of Sioux City's serious polio epidemic. The Eagles, having scored in the second period, led 6-0 until, with five minutes gone in the fourth quarter, veteran Sonny Favors flipped a 6-yard pass to end Marty Blackstone, who stepped into the end zone to tie the score, Roger Normann then kicked what proved to be the deciding point. Although Central led in first downs 10 to 8, the Omahans outgained the Little fvlaroons in passing and rushing but were in turn hurt by several long penalties. Twice the Castlemen failed to take full advantage of their breaks as they penetrated the visitors five yard line but failed to score. 99 Marty scores first T. Quarterback Leroy Sonny Favors showed a large homecoming crowd some brilliant passing as his teammates came from behind to gain an impressive win. Central scored two touchdowns in a little more than two minutes to overcome a lf3 to 6 deficit. NYith less than one minute remaining in the third period, Favors pitched a touch- down pass to end Marty Blackstone in a play covering forty-eight yards. On the first series of plays following the touchdown, guard Bill XVt-isenburger recovered a Tech fumble on the Omahans twenty-two yard line and on the next play Bob XVhite scored. An insurance touch- down came later in the fourth period when Favors again hit Blackstone. This was Sonny's third scoring pass of the game-as he had thrown to Flappy', Daniels for Central's first-and his fourth of the season. The Ililltoppers trailed Omaha in rushing 163 to 196 but 7 out of ll Central passes gained 151 yards to none for the boys from Tech. 100 f:- Bob White-Back Game Co-captain Duke Wrenn-Guard my , is.- ' Q T in-.nur ,A 'aa Colin Jensen-Tackle Game Co-captain Jim Diegnan-Back -4 any . if iw g.. ,,.4q f 'N WA Gallopin' Bob is off again CENTRAL 3'l SIOUX FALLS CATHEDRAL 6 The Little Maroons unleashed a vicious five- touehdown attack in trouncing Sioux Falls Cathedral, 31 to 6, at Sioux Falls. SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL 1953 Summary Coach 'lim Perkins' 1952-53 sophomore team went through a tough 14-game schedule, winning 4 and los- ing l0. The high point of the season was the 72 to 58 shellacking of a Heelan team that had earlier beaten the Sophs by 58 to 29. This 72-point game total was the most scored by any sophomore squad. Although the team won only four games, Coach Perkins turned out a lot of good varsity material. The top prospect was Cary Hanlon, a 6-foot forward who led the scoring with a 9.3 average. Other impressive players with two full years of varsity competition remaining were: Dick Krommenhoek, 6-2 center, who after a weak start ended with a 7 point aver- age, including a 26-point effort in one game, 5-10 Ken Baker, a speedy guard with a 23.6 average, Bob Minor, 5-9, and Aloe Biesbrock, 6-1. Four players were very im- pressive but will be hampered because they graduate dur- ing the middle of a season. These are: 6-1 Berland Smith, a very fast forward with a 7.2 average, Bob Pinky Peter- son, 5-11 guard, who also averaged 7.2, including one 30-point output, 6-0 Pete Christopher and 5-11 Dean Burroughs, who averaged 4.6 and 3.0, respectively. GQ 9 MID-YEAR CLASS PLAY lane Eyre is the story of an 18 year old gover- ness whose first position is at Thornfield hall, owned by Mr. Rochester. Her job is to be a teacher to young Adele, his ward, and a Com- punion to Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper. The plot centers around Iane's love for Mr. Rochester. When their wedding ceremony is interrupted by Rochester's brother-in-law, who announces that Mr. Rochester is already mar- ried, lane leaves Thornfield. The climax comes when Rochester's mad wife sets fire to the east wing of the house, which act not only kills her, but also causes Mr. Rochester to go blind trying to save her. In the final act of the play, lane retums to Thornfield and Mr. Rochester. ,ggi ,. eloris Dlsch, Georgia Klouda W 'l N X I Q' 4 Q f 3 s Harriet Martha Michael Carolyn Miller, Rosemary Ducommun, Miss Miller, Baker, Pat Ellis. MIKADO The Mikado, a popular Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, was presented by the choir in the Fall. Merlene Soren- son, Bob Griffith, Georgia Klouda, Dennis Hart, Dick Bailin, Nancy Conway, Carol M, Davis, and Emmanuel Bikakis had the leading roles. Nanki-Pou, who has fled from the court of his father, the Mikado of Iapan, has disguised himself as a wander- ing minstrel. Nanki-Pou falls in love with Yum-Yum, the ward of Ko-Ko, who is about to marry her himself. Many little escapades happen, which makes the Mikado an exciting and wonderful production to watch.
