With only six minutes of the first quarter gone, the Castlemen had scored both of their touch- downs. Although held scoreless thereafter, Central outplayed the visiting team all the rest of the game. After stopping the Eagle offense, the Maroons took over. On the first down, Jim Horan set up a touchdown with a 48 yard gallopg then Chuck Daniels scored from the eight yard line. Later, after again forcing Aberdeen to punt, Central scored on a 60 yard run by Horan. Outstanding in defensive work was Paul Kirkegaard, Central's center. fl apt 'JN Jim Hindman-Center Q.. The Maroons out- played the Warhawks the final two peroids, but the deficit of the 7 A-Hg ,R first half was too great to overcome. Waterloo :cored on its first play after recovering a blocked , kick, and six minutes later had countered again on a sprint around left end. Trailing 13-0 the Maroons retaliated with a 56 yard run by Chuck Daniels. Then the Warhawks marched 78 yards for another touchdown, which completed the scoring in the first half. Q . In the last half Central scored once in each quarter to a single tally by Waterloo in the fourth quarter. Daniels raced for one and Arlen Taakinson accounted for the other. The win sent the Links hot on the trail of the conference championship. It seemed that Central had the jitters in the first stanza, fumbling twice. An alert Lincoln defensive and a fast offense capitalized on these fumbles and scored early in the second quar- ter. The extra point was good and the Links led 7-0. The Maroons' best offensive threat came in the first of the third period. The Castlemen drove deep into Lincoln territory, where another Central fumble stopped cold the scoring threat one yard short of pay dirt, Lincoln again scored in the third to end the scoring and see a hard fighting Maroon team taste its second defeat of the season. Al Bill Weisenberger-Guard LeRoy Favors-Back CENTRAL 27 OMAHA CENTRAL 7 An aroused Central squad exploded for three touchdowns in the last half to defeat Omaha Central 27-7. It was the first Mis- souri Valley Conference win for the Maroons. Both teams scored once during the first period. In the second quarter the Centralites scored on a Favors to Dan- iels pass, putting Central into a lead which was not to be relin- quished. In the middle of the final period Horan scored on an end sweep covering 31 yards, and four minutes later he again coun- tered from the three yard line. Central came from behind to spell defeat to the visitors. After a scoreless first quarter, Omaha countered early in the second. A poor kickoff and the Daniels-Horan combination quickly retaliated for the Centralites, with Daniels driving across from the one yard line. Haak converted, making the score read 7-7. It was all Central and no Omaha in the third period, as every- thing seemed to work. A 30 yard run plus a Favors to Horan pass moved the ball to the three. It was Daniels and Haakinson for seven more. The Packers scored again in the fourth, but fleet Chuck Daniels broke up the try for one, and the Little Maroons again emerged victorious in the annual encounter. David Holtze-End Game Captain After an uneventful first half in which neither team was able to score, Central finally countered on a pass in the flat from Favors to Daniels. It came on fourth down after the Crusaders had stopped Central on the first three downs. The touchdown climaxed a drive which started deep in Central territory. The game still had not been won and Central had to withstand a fourth period drive by Heelan to win. A recovered fumble by the Maroons put an end to the threat of the Crusaders. ,, Q? J' it l Fred Hoffman-Tackle Pete Bovis-Guard CENTRAL 19 Sioux Falls 27 The Central High Little Maroons finished their 1951 season by losing to a powerful Sioux Falls squad. The Sioux Cityans watched as Central's first quarter lead of 13 points dwindled to a 13 to 13 tie at halftime, and then to a 19 to 27 deficit in the final period. Central opened the scoring in the first 3 minutes of play when Chuck Daniels rambled around end for 24 yards, and Haakinson made good the conversion to lead T-0. A recovered fumble and a 38 yard sprint by Haakinson led to the second touchdown for Central. Sioux Falls then scored on a pass from the eight yard line and later tied the game on a 90 yard run by their fullback. In the final period the Warriors scored twice on two sustained marchs, with Central scoring once on a brilliant 69 yard run by Daniels. The big Warrior line and their 220 pound fullback were just too much for the Maroons.
