For thirty-one years the old Ma- roon and White Dude Ranch has been under the capable direction of one of the best forernen this side of the Rio Grande! In 1912 a cowhand in a ten gallon hat and shiny boots passed through the gates of the ranch and has re- mained ever since. Some of the duties of Pop are training the new little colts, roping wild horses to tame them, rounding up strays, and branding the three year olds about to leave the ranch with the old Central Spirit brand. For thirty-eight years Pop Heit- man has given unfailing service to all of us. And now, Pop is going to hang up his cowboy hat and put away his boots. He is leaving Central High. And so to you, Pop Heitman, we loyal ranch hands give a cheer and say, Thank you. DEDICATION Aee ssn- 95: wow OJ ' 1.:Ww0'xU'N'l . 'U A ff! QWN, J 1' g . T ' - hs! P. Shedd 4 IN MEMCRIUM It is a time of great sorrow when a member of our ranch leaves us. All of us will remember Alwayne Paisley, who died December second of this year. Al- wayne was a sweet, generous girl whose patience and good spirit impressed us all during her long illness. Active in Friendship and Pep Club, Al- wayne's face will be long remembered around Cen- tral and her spirit will live forever. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! JOHNSON Mr. Johnson has gained popularity at the ranch as assistant foreman to Mr. Heitman. Besides his work at this job, Mr. Johnson is also advisor to Student Council. This takes much of his time and energy, and he is well liked by all members of Student Council for the aid and encouragement he has always given them. Mr. Johnson is usually good humored and friendly, but he objects to people using their voices in loud tones. His favorite meal consists of meat and po- tatoes, and, after this meal, he would like to settle down with a good book on philosophy. MR. HEITMAN The big boss of the old M, and W. is our principal, Mr. Heitman. On his shoulders he has carried the burdens and worries of the school for thirty-five years. His interest and participation in student affairs and his dilligence in Working for the school have long been noted by his students. Pop, as he is known to his pupils, is well liked for his cooperation in handling matters of controversy. No matter what the issue, Mr. Heitman could be counted on to present a fair decision. Everyone of us should realize that it is a big job to run a ranch the size of ours. Also, there are many strays and wild colts that have to be kept in hand. And no one has done the job any better than Foreman, t'Pop' Heit- man. MAUREEN BREYFOGLE- GRETCHEN FRATT-R6giS- Secretary. traf- MR. STEVENS Mr. Harold Stevens is the sheriff for the young cowboys on the ranch. As Dean of Boys, he advises and guides his boys concerning all walks of school life. So capable and fair is he, that he is admired by the whole school. Besides his job as Dean of Boys, Mr. Stevens has re- ceived all round applause as basketball coach, for he took his boys to state last year. Outside of school, his interests are quite varied. His greatest enjoyment is a big steak dinner with all the trimmings, and after dinner, his pastime is to settle down with his favorite magazine, Time. MISS FRY The sheriff for the girls is Miss Lenore Fry. As Dean of Girls, Miss Fry checks absences and writes admit slips, occasional-ly running across her pet peeve, girls who sign their mother's names to excuses. Besides working with the girls, Miss Fry serves as the capable advisor of Friendship. One of her favorite hobbies is woodshop which she is learning at night school. When not wield- ing hammer and saw, Miss Fry would like to eat a big T-bone steak. at -ff 'it 'fr 13 EVA DUTROW - Bool Manager 2- Bottoms up! Aren't you starting a little young? You're looking for the An- nual Editors, Colleen Murphy and Harold Falk? Of course, they're so busy running around planning the book or sticking their noses in the Department Head's business you can never find them-Who's the boy over there, furiously tacking up posters? You don't know HIM? Why that's Bob Doerr, our sales manager, He's the one who planned our Ranch assembly-you thought that was the best asembly you'd ever seen? We think so too, but then we're slightly prejudiced. I don't supose you know the technical editors either? They're Julie Bcrgeson, Curran Lamar, Marian Fischer, and Harriet Miller. Where are they? Oh, probably out in the back room arguing. Those camera crazy boys who are trying to snap your picture right now are Harold Falk and Bob Kaiman, photographers. In close league with them are the photography editors, Marlene Smith and Karen John- son, but they aren't around right now. Dablnling in the paints are the art- ists, Mary Anne Gohr and George Smithg and that girl furiously hacking away at the typewriter is our typist, Ruth Cox. The advertising managers are downtown getting ads. They're Jim Grueskin, Norma Levine, and George Jenkins. Over there in the corner, slaving over a hot list of bills, is Arlys St. Clair, and right here is Marianne Weil desperately writing copy to meet a deadline. Who am I? Why I'm Mary Sifford, copy editor, and I wrote this article after too many trials and tribulations to mention. Well, this is our Annual Staff. Getting deadlines in on time and snoop- ing around for news are the two things that the RECORD staff is constantly do- ing. This efficient staff puts out a paper which everyone enjoys reading. The REC- ORD includes interviews, editorials, sports, and, of course, a little bit of gossip. Every Friday at 3:05 someone comes into your room with the RECORD, and finally at 3:15 you may read it. The reporters really have to do a lot of work, but then we can't forget the ones that put the RECORD to press and make sure the type is set right. The entire staff should be congratulated on the Great Job they do all year, and thanks to them we know what is buzzin' around Good Old Cen- tral. Y '1 Qi Q s u 4 u H if fa. MY? I , - ' wa- s. Through its representatives, new projects are begun, old ones are improved and controversies are settled. The first semester, Student Coun- cil helped back Pep Club by put- ting up the money for the Central pennants, putting a pencil machine in the office, and finally obtaining Central's beautiful flag. Also Stu- dent Council worked on the im- pressive Homecoming assembly, parade and gaily decorated dance. A vote of thanks should certainly go to the Student Council for their many weeks of work on the Home- coming. Row 1: Janis Carlson, Margaret Engstrand, Roberta Maurer, Connie Riaff, Julie Bergeson. Its next job was working to secure a telephone booth to be placed in the school for the convenience of the students. Probably the main project of the Council was the large paper drive it sponsored and the wonderful paper dance it gave to in- fluence contributions. FRIENDSHIP-7mm ' Friendship is a club open to all high school girls and is governed by a smaller group of girls known as the Inner Circle. This year Friendship completed many interesting projects. It sponsored a Junior Ten Mixer to acquaint the new girls with the club. Refreshments were root beer and doughnuts. This mixer proved very successful and started Friendship off with a bang. Probably its biggest undertaking this year was Friendshipls beautiful Homecoming float, which was fortunate enough to win first prize. The float was a large rainbow stuffed with many pieces of different colored crepe paper, beneath the rainbow sat girls in formals. It was agreed by all that the float was truly beautiful and that a great deal of work had been put on lt' Also on the agenda was a style show and the Senior farewell, which is al- ways impressive. '660t4 Much was learned by the Y-Teens this year by attending various conferences. One conference was held at Grinnell College during the summer, and there the girls learned about other religions, new dances, and other valuable information. This year the Y-Teen program consisted of various speakers, dances, parties, and educational panels. During the first few weeks of school a small group of Y-Teens went to Lake City to a conference, where they learned more about other clubs and what they do to make an interesting club. The girls had a panic on the trip. The club meets every first and third Wednesdays, the cabinet has its meetings every other Tuesday. The advisers are Miss Sperry, Miss Fry, Miss Buckingham, and Miss Miller. The officers are Pres- ident, Ruth Agard, Vice-President, Molly McCauley, Secretary, Mari- anne Weil. IAQ N-vnu T.: A.A.C. A. A. C. is a club started for the purpose of furthering ath- letic interest in the school. Elig- ible members are all major letter winners of basketball, football, and track, service letter winners and cheerleaders. Some of the projects of the year were a party for all new members given by the old ones at the closed shelter house at Stonepark, a plan for selling programs at all the foot- ball games, and a large Christmas party. The officers who capably directed A. A. C. this year were Bill Rawlings, Presidentg Gordon Newman, Vice-Presidentg Sharon Batcheller, Secretaryg Jolene Seifert, Treas- urerg and Arlen Haakinson, Seageant-of-Arms. PEP Whaddaya say? Pep Club, under the capable direction of Julie Bergeson as President, was begun anew this year and was espe- cially successful because of a new D-merit system. Some of the accom- plishments Of the club have been obtain- ing Central pennants for the school, work- ing on a Homecoming float, and presenting a very amusing skit at the half-time at the East-Central game. This describes the beginning of Dramatics C1ub's biggest project, Pride and Prejudice, a play given to raise money for the lighting on the stage. Dramatics Club is a new club or- ganized to further interest in dra- matics and to obtain improvements for the stage. Last year, Dramatics Club became famous because of its ef- fort in obtaining the beautiful Cy- clorama, which now hangs on the stage. This year, through the pro- duction of Pride and Prejudice, the club obtained ninety dollars to buy spotlights for the stage. After the play, meetings were held weekly, during which skits, readings, and talks were presented. One of the largest features of the year was the Christmas party, with a reading, a Christmas skit, and refreshments. A Christmas tree and gaily wrapped presents completed the effect. The club met every Monday in room 214 under the capable direction of Miss Miller. In the Speech I class, beginning students learned the fundamentals and pur- poses of good speaking and audience analysis. They handled local club re- quests for five minute speeches, and also broadcasted on KCOM for a speaking contest on Tuberculosis. The advanced speech classes worked primarily on contest work this year, with such types of speeches as mem- orized ten minute orations, dramatic and character interpretations and especially extemporaneous speaking, in which a person picks a subject out of a box and is given one hour to pre- pare a ten minute speech on his sub- ject. They have also done work on humorous readings, original oratories and radio speaking. In Debate this year, the question was: Resolved that the American people should reject the Welfare State. The debate team made many trips to towns near Sioux City, among them Omaha, Vermillion, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City.
