FUOTBALL HI TORY-1971 The last three years, the Central Yellowjackets football team was made up with young men of championship caliber. The 1971 season saw Central compile a record of 6-4, the best in several seasons, and one-half game better than 1970 5-4-1 ledger. This team was rated among the states top five all season by the Courier-Journal. The team was hurt very badly by graduation, so Coach William Griffith and his assistants had to do a complete rebuilding job. This team held its own with all opponents, beating Dayton Roth, Shawnee, and a very tough Iroquois, and tying both Manual and lVlale, and another very tough team in Atherton. We were very proud that our Yellowjackets could manage a 3-3-3 record, and looked forward to 1973 to be the Year of the Yellowjackets . lndeed 1973 was set aside to be the Year of the Yellowjackets. Central beat all arch-rivals and lost only to the three toughest team in the city or county, St. Xavier, Bishop David, and Trinity. The game with Bishop David was Homecoming '73, but more important the chance to take the City Championship. This was something that had been looked upon by Central teams for a very long time. But this time unlike others the title chances were very real. However, Bishop David had something to say about that. Central lost that game 27-0 , but worse the titles that had been long awaited was once again gone. This our final season here at Central ended with a 7-3 record, the best in the last 10 years. Sen- iors Kim Dudley, Larry Pruitt, Geary IVlorton, Roscoe Jenkins, Charless Douglas, Garfield Sewell, Leonard Little, and Robert lVlcClain helped the offense to score over 200 points to finish second in the city scoring race. Keith Talley, lVlilton Robards, Barry Cotrell, David King, and William Harris helped the defensive unit to score five shotouts for the season. Tragedy also struck us this year. We lost a good friend and teammate in Joseph lVlcPherson who gave his all for us in '72, and we dedicated this last year to him. He will be long remembered here at Central, by all those who knew him, teachers and friends alike, for his dedication to Central High.
