On the other hand to help pep us up and lead us in cheers at games were our cheerleaders. These lively young ladies were Terri Grundy, Roxanne Starling and Dianne'Williams. James Montgomery and Gail Kelcy represented Central at Red Cross leadership camp for one week. At long last, the time we had awaited, the school year 73-74 arrived, we 358 seniors now looked upon our new school year as a step closer to reaching our dreams and goals. We also found a new leader as principal, Mr. Joseph McPherson. He was a man who helped us and understood our needs. Our assistant principals were now Mr. Willie Lewis and Mr. John Rhodes. Always keeping up with the news and happenings at Central was the Current Newspaper staff. Those on the spot staff members were lssacBrown, Rita Brown, Teresa Dunson, William Harris, Linda Jones, Gail Kelcy, Michael Miles, Patricia Petty, Renee Smith CAsst. Editorl, Keith Talley CEditorD, and Kathy Eskridge. Another great achiever in our class was Cynthia Lusco . Cynthia was a National Merit finalist, one of 19 in Kentucky and 1400 nationally. For the first time ever at Central, James Montgomery was named a Kentucky Colonel. Our leaders for the senior class were Keith Talley president, Charlene Nash vice-presi- dent, Wanda Smith sect. , and James Montgomery treas. Alfred Johnson was the Student Council president with Kathy Eskridge as vice-president. The title of Miss Central was given to Khoda Stone. Her attendant was Victoria Robey. Our senior sweetheart was Myrna White. Leading our C.H .S . marching band were our high stepping, baton twirling, majorettes. They also made history by being the first majorettes to twirl at Central. These ladies were Linda Walker, Elena Towns, Veronica Gordon, Rosalind Thornton, Shebell Peak, and head majorette, Gail Kelcy. Among the many activities for Homecoming was the choice of a Homecoming Queen. The second runner-up was Gail Bottoms, and first runner-up was Juanita Taylor. Crowned Homecoming Queen 1974 was Gail Kelcy. Many things were accomplished in the three years we attended Central. Our accomplish- ments must not end here. We must move on and achieve mush more in our future. The things we accomplished were the result of all of our efforts. Our journal of athletic ex- periences will follow. We are proud to have been with Central in it's finest hour as the only all Black school in Louisville. Our class was part of it's great culture and heritage. As we leave Central we shall always hold in our hearts, those things it taught us. 107

CLASS HI TURY 4 BY- GAIL KELCY There are always certain goals and dreams that every student in his life time reaches for. He strives to reach them in many different ways. As we, 769 sophomores, walked through the main entrance of Central High School in September 1971 , we were thrilled at the new experiences of high school and adulthood that we would soon encounter. We were to face incidents, both frustrating and rewarding, good times and bad times. Yet we walked on always looking ahead. During our three years at Central we were the only class to have three different principals to lead us. In our sophomore year, Mr. J. W. Hackett was our principal, truly a good leader. The man to guide us on our way was Mr. A. Frazier Curry our counselor. This was Mr. Curry's first year as a counselor at Central. Those of us who needed other help found oulrselves facing Mr. Arthur L. Roberts, and Mr. Joseph McPherson, our assistant prmcipa s. Then we were able to see that there was more to school than just going to class. We found interest in different organizations such as, Red Cross, Student Council, Youth Speaks, FBLA, FHA, Boosters Club, Drama, Year Book and Band. Representing our sophomore class as Miss CentraI's attendant was Gail Kelcy. September 1972 represented a new year and a new experience for our class. With 714 juniors, we moved on, this time with a new principal to lead us, Dr. Joseph A. Orr, a scholar with an earned Ph. D. from Florida State University . Our new assistant principal was Mr. Robert Butler. Realizing that progress was the name of the game Jacqueline Petty, Maria Pyles, Charlene Nash, William Harris, Alfred Johnson, Keith Talley, James Montgomery, Annette Dix, Antoinette Green and Clarissa Griffin were inducted into the National Honor Society. A new program, funded by, the General Electric Foundation was started to enable participants to take career education courses preparing them for immediate entry into technical and ap- prenticeship programs. The pioneers for this new program were Clyde Hall, George Ruff, Shebell Peak, Robert Halsell and George Greenhill. Keith Talley attended Northwestern University for five weeks . Keith was sent there by the COURIER JOURNAL and LOUISVILLE TIMES for journalism. Joan Stringer received a scholarship from Western University to attend summer school in a Junior Honors Pro- gram. She earned seven college hours. Representing another first for Central, our band attended band camp at Kentucky State University. Carolyn Robinson and Khoda Stone were Miss CentraI's junior attendants. Marla Boyd was attendant to the Homecoming Queen. 106
