DEDICATED T0 There is a great deal of difference between a pupil and a student. A pupil is one who comes to school when he wants to and does his work when he wants to . A student, how- ever, is one who attends school regularly, does all of his work to the best of his ability, and learns--for the pure enjoyment of learning. We would truly have to say that Vernon was a student and not a pupil. For instance, when Vernon represented Central in debate, there were a couple of topics that Vernon didn't really like. But, instead of doing a half Way job, he debated these topics with the same skill and determination that he would have used in debating a topic of his own choice . Vernon was a very intelligent young man, but more than that, he had learned to think critically for himself, and he had learned to reason--which is very important in our world of mass media . Of course, we at Central were not the only ones who recognized Vernon's ability--as evidenced by his being named a Presidential scholar, one of the highest honors a student in the United States can achieve . As all of you know, Vernon was very concerned about helping his own race . He be- lieved that to accomplish his goals, he should get the BEST education possible and should develope his analytical mind to its fullest potential. I think that Vernon would like to know that even though he can no longer be with you in person, that his beliefs, his ac- complishments, and his spirit will be a challenge to each of you to make the most of your lives . Mrs . Linda Berry CIVIC CONTRIBUTIONS IN RETROSPECT Vernon's participation in civic groups outside the school can be summed up in one word, involvement. For Vernon there were many types of involvement, for example: involvement in the things that he believed were right such as a committee working in conjunction with the Mayor's office in order to control violence at high school games during the 1970 Basketball State Championship tournament, involvement in trying to im- prove present conditions attested to by his untiring efforts in a recent conference which dealt with racism and its causes, involvement in making the Generation Gap just slightly smaller so that you and I can understand and be understood better, involvement in the church which he felt should be more relevant to the black man's everyday struggle, and involvement in the political system of our city through televised debates dealing with city problems and their solutions . Although we may not all be able to 'participate in as many activities as Vernon, we may all learn a lesson from him . Throughout Vernon's life he seemed to live a philosophy: Fight for what you believe and believe in that for which you fight. Louis Slaughter 6
