The friendly and considerate teachers and students impressed Estela greatly, and she was especially proud of Central's triumphs in such fields as sports, debate, and music. When asked what she would remember most about Central, Estela replied, The friendly students and very helpful teachers. Under the guidance of their advisor, Mr. Tom Par- nell, club members initiated grade school pro- grams whereby young fans were guests at varsity games. Hard working athletes also served as hosts and provided refreshments for visiting athletic squads, assisted in ushering at local contests, and sponsored the lettermen's father-son banquet in May. Under the influence of the 57-58 S Club, new luster was added to Central's high tradi- tions of sportsmanship and school spirit. CRCDSS COUNTRY This was the biggest and most successful year in C'entral's cross country history. Un- der the guidance of Coach Earl Jaeger, Cen- tral's harriers worked hard and reached their peak in the middle of the season Winning the Hartford Invitational and the Lakeshore Meet. The season got under way on September 20 with Central defeating their rivals from Mani- towoc. Manitowoc returned to Sheboygan along with Port Washington for another meet held on the Kiwanis Park Course. Central beat Mani- towoc, but lost to Port. After the two home meets, the Redmen trav- eled to Ripon to take a first place by defeat- ing three other Wisconsin schools. The Hartford Invitational was the next meet on the roster. Central captured the first place trophy by defeating fifteen other schools and had three Harriers among the top ten to re- ceive medals. Central returned home to play host for the Lakeshore Meet to be held on the Kiwanis Park course, and Coach Jaeger got his boys into top condition. Competing against seven other schools, Central won possession of the traveling trophy and had four medalists in the first seven runners to cross the finish line. A fiu epidemic inactivated many of the top harriers and resulted in a fourth place finish it the Northshore Invitational at Whitefish ay. Central harriers then traveled to Washing- ton Park in Milwaukee to compete against Mar- quette and West Bend High. An outstanding perlformance resulted in a first place for Cen- tra . The Cross Country season ended with the State Meet held at Hartford on November 2. Central received a 10th place in a field of eighteen schools. Harriers who worked hard and turned in excellent performances this year were Herb Paulson, Ralph Wagner, Herb Weber, Jerry Erzen, Jim Heling, Lyn Lienhard, Bill Block, John Schultz, and Bob Moran. Letter winners were Herb Paulson, Ralph Wagner, Herb Web- er, Jerry Erzen, Jim Heling, and Lyn Lienhard. Jim Schramm was this year's manager. Row 1. H. Weber, J. Erzen, R. Wagner, H. Paulson, J. Although Cen- tral had some tough breaks during the grid iron season, they were a better ball club than their record of 2-3-1 indicates. With the amount of material we had returning, the boys displayed a terrific desire to perform like good football players, said Coach Zimmerman. In the only non-conference game this season, Central played Rockford West. Central gained 120 yards with their strong rushing attack, but it wasn't enough to defeat powerful Rock- ford. The game ended with Rockford having 19 points to Central's 6. The conference sea- son opened when Central's squad, with Coaches Earl Zimmerman, Thomas Parnell, and Fred Goettel, travelled to Oshkosh to be defeated, 14-2. When the Indian center snapped the ball over the punter's head, Central received two points on a safety. Central boys showed their parents that Cen- tral had what it takes to win when they de- feated Fond du Lac, 19-14 on Parents' Day. Enthusiastic parents saw three long gaining plays, two runs by John Paurich, and a beau- tiful 25-yard pass from Dave Garton to Leon Schuchardt clinch the victory. The roughest game this season was against powerful Green Bay West when Dave Garton and Augie Stempihar were forced out of ac- tion with injuries. Before the eyes of a home crowd, Central went down fighting by a 10-0 score. Appleton took Central's fourth conference game away with a 13-6 score. Central took to the air with Paurich completing nine out of sixteen passes for a total of 73 yards. A pass to Dave Kasten accounted for Central's six points. Central rocked the Fox River Valley by up- setting Green Bay East, 7-0, for the first time since 1949. Determined players such as Leon Schuchardt, Augie Stempihar, Lee Kernen, and Dare Simenz made the thrilling victory pos- sib e. Dave Simenz was named as one of the four backs on the offensive team while Augie Stempihar was named as one of the most valu- able linemen. The points were made on a touchdown pass from Al Bennin to Tom Posewitz. In the second game of the Jayvee schedule, Central defeated Fondy 7-0. The touchdown came on a run by Tom Posewitz. Tom Hardy played an outstanding defensive game block- ing two passes and intercepting one. The Jayvees dropped their first game of the season to Green Bay West, 13-20. All of Central's points were made in the second half. Central's Jayvees lost a close game to Ap- pleton, 6-7. After Appleton made an early touchdown, no more points were scored until late in the fourth quarter, when Posewitz scored on a 50-yard run. The only tie for the Jayvees this season was with Green Bay East. The game was a battle of defenses with a final score of 0-0. The Jayvees closed their season by tromp- ing crosstown-rival, North, 34-0, to make a 3-2-1 season record. Coach Erickson played all 32 Jayvees plus eight freshmen during the game. Many of the boys made an excellent showing during the season and will be good material for the varsity team in the years to come. The first game of the season for the Fresh- men was a thrilling contest with North. After both teams had fought through the first half without scoring, Pete Vercouteren squeezed across the line for six points. Central's other six points came near the end of the game when Ken Meyer fought his way over the line for a touchdown. After their first 12-0 victory over North, Central went on to defeat South Side Junior High School, 19-0. Frank Reuter was the first to score for Central with a 25-yard run in the first quarter. In the second quarter Ron Grosh took the ball 70-yards down the field on a kick-off return for a touchdown. Still battling in the fourth quarter, Reuter again put the ball across for a touchdown. The Freshmen dropped their third game of the season to Sheboygan Falls, 8-0. Falls scored a touchdown in the second quarter and a safety in the fourth against Central. In the last Fresh- man game, Plymouth proved to be too much for Central as they walked away with a 25-0 victory. VARSITY ror lead in the last seven seconds. First Coach Huebner came off the bench to successfully protest a recent Appleton basket, then rugged Kon Testwuide dropped in two gift shots, and finally Jon Paurich turned Jerry Arenz's last-second steal into a winning basket never to be forgotten by Central fans. Du- Wayne Prinsen performed gallantly as he dropped in 23 points, 10 of them in the hectic fourth quarter. The Central Redmen lengthened their winning streak to five by successfully defeating Fond du Lac, 62-57. Playing average ball, Central was in complete control of the game ex- cept for a short period late in the second half. Paurich was top scorer with 21 points. During the Christmas recess the Redmen continued in their winning ways by defeating the Alumni and Racine Horlick. In a slowly developing Alumni game which turned into a see- saw contest, Central finished out in front by a 53-47 score. DuWayne Prinsen's 26 points led the way as the Redmen walked over Racine Horlick, 61-46. Central cagers repeated their brilliant performances of pre- vious games when they defeated North High, 66-59, in their first meeting this season. Coach Huebner was holding back a real surprise in Dick Horness, who came off the bench to tally a total of 17 markers. Other back court artists made good showings by pulling this one out of the fire in Flashes of brilliance were combined with moments of despair as Central's up and down Redmen compiled an 11-10 record over a de- manding schedule. Their fifth place finish in the Fox River Valley Conference was just what sportswriters had predicted. Coach Carl l-luebner's able cagers were the talk of the Valley as they opened the sea- son by winning their first eight games and attaining a ranking of 9th in the State's Big Sixteen. They then proceeded to drop nine out of the next 10 contests, playing beautiful ball against tough opponents and doing noth- ing right against lesser foes. In that fatal stretch they lost four of their games by .a total of six points. Closing the season in a blaze of glory, the Redmen played outstanding tourna- ment ball, losing only to Manitowoc who went on to win State Consolation Championship. Central's basketeers opened the season by playing pre-conference games with two Mil- waukee high schools. In the initial contests Central displayed good scoring potential, out- standing defensive capabilities, and unusually strong depth by defeating Milwaukee River- side, 74-45, and West Allis Central, 58-49. Opening Conference play, Central proved their ability under extreme pressure as they out-fought highly regarded West to a 63-52 upset. The speed of John Paurich helped shat- ter a fourth quarter press while Testwuide's rugged rebounding and Arenz's determined de- fensive efforts made the victory possible. Appleton's home court was the scene of one of the most thrilling Central cage battles in many years as the pressing Redmen came back from a 16 point second quarter deficit to up- set the strong title-favorites, 54-52. The cour- ageous team battle was climaxed when the Y- 1 W W-..--.-M .... a...M.A.-.A+ ram. ..,.:..+ fm... the wild fourth quarter. Central's undefeated record was tossed out of the window when a fast scoring Red Devil squad stomped out any possibility for a Red- men victory. With everything going wrong- faulty shooting and passing-Central was able to score only 57 points to East's 91. Prinsen seemed to be the only Redman hitting with a total of 18 points. Knocked into a five game losing streak by East, Central took on the Manitowoc Ship- builders to be defeated, 66-64, before the grief- stricken eyes of a home crowd. The Redmen played a terrific game only to have all hopes for a victory vanish when Manitowoc guard, Bill Nelson, swished one from half court in the last seconds of the game. Before the final buzzer however, Manty fans flocked upon the floor making it impossible to finish the game. When the court was finally cleared, the re- maining two seconds of play weren't enough for the Redmen to launch a retaliation. Although Oshkosh was definitely tagged as the underdog, she steamed steadily ahead to defeat the Redmen when they faltered in the second half. As a result of the heartbreaking 72-66 loss, the Central Redmen were dropped into a fourth place tie with Green Bay West. Starting the second round of games for the Conference season, Central received a 1-2 punch from Green Bay West and Appleton which dropped her into the second division. Central picked the wrong night to invade West as the Wildcats were having one of their hottest nights--sinking every basket in sight. The final buzzer found Central hiding behind a 77-50 score. The Terrors handed Central their fifth loss of the season by using a full court, fourth quarter press which completely stymied Hmm lm-nl flavors ln the last RIA minutes. AD- VARSITY BASKETBALL Row 1. Central was able to purchase one more ride on the victory wagon by completely overpower- ing Fond du Lac, 72-53. Fondy never had a chance with big Kon Testwuide garnering a tremendous 27 points, followed by Prinsen with 21. The Golden Raiders of North High put the Huebnermen on ice in the gruesome fourth quarter of their second meeting. With 45 sec- onds to go Central pulled ahead 49-48, only to give the Raiders four gift points. Between the free tosses, Central's Kon Testwuide managed to drop one through the hoop to end the game at 52-51. A deficiency of accuracy on the part of both Central and East kept a low scoring 49-43 game under the heading of a close one. Paurich dropped in a total of 16 points to share high scoring honors with By Prentice of East. Our finest game of the season, said Coach Huebner in referring to Central's 67-61 loss in Manty's crackerbox gym. Good Redmen re- bounding helped offset fine Manty shooting as spectators remained on the edge of their seats right up to the final buzzer. The conference champs again took full 'advantage of every break to win the classic contest. Central cagers followed their best effort with their poorest as Oshkosh became the third team to take two games from the Redmen this sea- son. The 52-51 game came to a halt as Osh- kosh edged past the final buzzer one point ahead of Central. DuWayne Prinsen and Kon Testwuide were high scorers with 19 and 18 points respectively. Because basketball has a longer season than any other sport, many teams find it hard to be interested in post season tournament games unless they have been enthusiastic about a winning streak near the end of the season. This was not so of Central. Some of the sea- son's most brilliant moments came in the ex- citing, heart-stopping tournament games. After winning their two games in the re- gional tournament, Central was toppled from Championship honors by the Fox River Valley Champs, Manitowoc. In the first game Central tromped on New Holstein, 70-57. Earning an- other crack at Central by defeating Plymouth, North again found Central's big five too tough for them and went down fighting to a 66-52 defeat. The regionals were topped off when Manitowoc invaded the Armory to defeat bat- tling Central, 76-66, in spite of the Redmen's fantastic 5024 shooting average. gi .X O 4 XM H 41 ' x T 'P' K 3X 7 ,5 M' U u K. Davies, B. Wright, B. Miller, T. Posewitz, D. Cinealis, Coach Walt Anderson. Coach Walt Anderson's -Jayvee team had a tremendous season, ending on top of the Fox River Valley Conference by defeating every team in the Valley. Throughout the season the Jayvees won sixteen games and lost one non- conference game. The Jayvees opened their cage season by splitting their non-conference games with two Milwaukee high schools. The first team to meet the powerful Jayvees, Milwaukee Riverside, was defeated 30-58. In the other non-conference game, Central fought hard right down to the iinal buzzer, but skillful West Allis High proved to be a little too powerful as the 38-35 score indicates. After their loss to West Allis, Central's Jay- vees opened the Fox River Valley Conference play by defeating Green Bay West 49-38 and every team they met thereafter. The West game was quite close until the third quarter when Central started a steady and sure march for victory. In their second meeting with West, Central fought to a close 59-56 victory. Gary Azukas and Tom Posewitz played outstanding games. Traveling to Appleton for the first meeting between the schools this season, Central man- aged to take a close one from Appleton High's Jayvees. In the 37-34 game Posewitz scored 15 points. In their second game Appleton had lost some of its pep and drive and Central plowed over them 42-29. In the first meeting with Fond du Lac, the Jayvees came across with another win for Cen- tral's home fans. The final score was 43-36. Fond du Lac fans saw an exciting and tense game when Central took a close one from them 43-40. On January 3 the Jayvees went with the Var- sity squad to Racine for a mid season, non- conference game. The Rebels of Horlick High found our Jayvee team to be just as powerful as our Varsity when Central defeated them 53-41. In the annual North-Central games, Central's Jayvees proved to be too much for her cross- town rivals. Excellent defense, ball handling, and backboard work enabled Central to clob- ber North 71-29 in the first meeting and 47-31 in the second. Green Bay East was another school that found Central too powerful for them. Central ran away with the first game in the first canto and East was unable to catch up as the 45-24 score indicates. East didn't receive quite as severe a beating in the second game, but she found that Central hadn't lost any of her zip. The final score was 47-30. The Jayvees showed hard fighting Manitowoc who was boss by defeating them 52-37 and 53-45. Dick Cinealis, Dan Davies, Tom Pose- witz, and Gary Azukas played fine games. The Jayvee cage season ended with Oshkosh invading the Armory. Our Jayvees were ready and waiting for them when they defeated them 52-41 and 51-24. Posewitz was high man, gar- nering a tremendous 20 points. The outstanding season the Jayvees had and the type of ball they played can only make us look forward to next year's varsity squad. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL Row 1. P. Vercouteren, R. LaPean, W. Hermann, B. Kaiser, D. Weimann, D. Meyer, B. Schmidt, E. Hall. Row 2. Coach Diamond, D. Miley, J. Gernlein, R. Ognacevic, B. Scheele, F. Reuter, R. Grosh, J. Hoppe, P. Held. Under the guidance of James Diamond, Cen- tral's new Freshman coachfthe Junior Red- men ended the Lakeshore League with a 6-6 record. Bruce Kaiser scored 14 of Central's 29 points when the cagers took the season opener against Port Washington, 29-21. In the second meet with Port, Central just couldn't find the mark and came out on the short end of a 24-23 score. The Freshman's first encounter with Ply- mouth proved to be fatal as Central went down fighting in a 44-40 defeat. The next game with Plymouth, although closer, had a happier ending as Central just skimmed over them, 34-33. Skillful ball handling by Frank Reuter and Ron Grosh contributed to Central's victory. Central split with North this season taking the first game 37-23 and losing the second 63-24. A good offense enabled Central to cap- ture the first game, but hard luck was with them in the second. Frank Reuter and Bruce Kaiser, each scor- ing nine points, combined to lead the Fresh- men in a victory drive over Kohler. The final score'was 46-34. With three players out with injuries, Kohler got revenge in the second con- test as the game ended at 25-24. Although Central held South to a meek nine points in the first half, South came back in the last half to take the game 31-30. Poor rebound- ing and failure to take advantage of oppor- tunities cost the Freshmen their second game with South. At the final buzzer the scoreboard read 49-43. After Central took the lead in the first quar- ter, they held it all the way to defeat Falls. 44-29. In their second meeting Central more than doubled Falls feeble 19 points with a 43-19 victory. Such players as Bruce Kaiser, Frank Reuter, Peter Vercouteren, and Burton Scheele should be good material for next year's JayVees. Bowling Row 1. Carol Schuette, Rhoda Reiss, and Janet Gross. Row 2.
