Rrecision-like and brilliant was the Redmen grid machine as Central hligh School produced its First, lirst division team since 'l934, Coach Belliori and his aide, John Barth, lashioned a speedy, spirited, hard charging gridiron lorce which perlormed sensationally at times. lhe Redmen, in a highly contested conlerence race, tied lor second place with Qshkosh. l:or a warmup, the Redmen traveled Q90 miles to down the Antigo eleven, TQ-6. Vanden Avond, East, booted two lield goals to win 6fO. probably the hardest lought game ol the season ended on a rain soaked lield in a ill-ill tie with Qshkosh. Ml-lats ohf to the linemen in this battle!! Belore a Eondy Dads Night crowd, the Redmen, led by Bill loston, sky-rocketed to their First conler- ence win in live years, Qi-7. It was ugpeedyn Kurt Weber who put the Appleton game on ice, Kurt eluded his tacklers twice to make the Final score, Q8-19. lhe biggest upset ol the season was the outcome ol the Central-West game. Berry and loston each scored twice to topple West lrom the unbeaten column, Q8-7. Before the Homecoming crowd in the 'Ship- builder's City , Central sneaked by to win a close, hard Fought game, i4f7. Jim Schroom, cagey wingman, was outstanding on delense. Rlaying belore the largest crowd, 4500, ever to see a lootball game in Sheboygan, the Redmen walloped North, our intra-city rivals, 3477. It was that backtield ol Woelller, loston, Berry, and Weber who played Mheads-up ball which climaxed a very successlul season with a stirring win. , James Schroom James Schroom: Cherbourg Jim , used all of his 165 pounds to good advantage as he constantly broke through to stop the opponent's threats A good offensive and defensive end, with uncanny ability to snare long passes. . Played outstanding ball in the Manitowoc and Oshkosh games, scored a touchdown in each. Deane Woelffer William Hoell Donald Luft Deane Woelffer: A big, hard charging guard, describes Dizz . . . l-lis stiff resistance and persistency in holding the line made him an enviable threat to opposing linemen, .. A good man when the going was tough. Din , who tipped the scales at QOO, was also one of our fastest linemen. William Hoell: Junior center. The hustler and ball-hawk of the team was The White Owl , who won l-lonorable Mention on the All Conference team and was dreaded by conference foes, because of his rough, bruising play in every game. Bill turned in his best performance in the Oshkosh game, recovering three Oshkosh fumbles. Donald Luft: The tallest boy in the conference, standing 6'4 , and weighing 190 lbs., Donso also won l-lonorable Mention acclaim on the All-Conference selections. l-lis ability to play three different positions, when the time arose, proves Donso's versatility and athletic prowess. l-le will strengthen the line again next season. Gale Woelffer: The 'Arnold Tucker' of the l2edmen's backfield best describes Gale. l-lis smart decisions, and field judgment made him an excellent quarterback, and signal caller. One of the few juniors on the squad who showed some spirited and quick tempered play which will be seen on the gridiron again next fall. Kurt Weber: This 150 pound package of speed and might was the surprise threat of the season. Bones , a cagey, hard running half-back, surprised conference foes with his change of pace, which caught them always unprepared. . . Weighing only 148 pounds, and standing 5'9'f, Bill was one of the most dreaded baclEs,iXnTthE conference. . . l-le was selected All-Conference half-back and kicked 19 out of Q0 . . .I . Gale Woelffer Kurt Weber William Toston Rueben Erdmann James Kreuter Robert Kuhlmann Rueben Erdmann: 'll2ube , a fast charging, hard fighting guard won Honorable Mention acclaim on the All-Conference team, for fine all-around play ,. The lightest lineman on the team, weighing only 159 pounds, Rube did a splendid job, backing up the l?edmen's line on defense. l-lis tactful speed and power will be missed next season. James Kreuter: Big Jim , tipped the scales at 196 pounds, making him an ideal tackle. Playing in this position, he received the nod of many coaches as a rugged individual who could really dish it out. Jim will be one of those standouts who will strengthen the Redmen line next SCdSOr1. Robert Kuhlmann: Senior tackle, and a bulwark on offense and defense, The unmovable Kuhn, was a 'lbrick wall to opposing fullbacks, who tried the left side of the line in vain. Weighing about QOO pounds, Bob, was always ready for a full 48 minutes of hard play ..., l-le gained a berth on the All-State squad. Kenneth Hobolich: Although on the injured list toward the end of the season, l-lobbien, won l-lonorable Mention also. l-lis fine punting kept opponents constantly out of scoring position. .. l-lis passing ability from a half-back spot, was also an important link in Central's backfield combination, Ken also has that big senior year left. The Jayvees showed their First power by trounc- ing a wealc North eleven by a Q6-6 delicit. North was the only team to score against the Junior Redmen. ln the next games the Redmen smothered Fond du Lac Q6-O and then swamped Manitowoc 34-O. ln the Final game, they completely Hran overn the North boys once again, whipping them solidly this time, 44-O. Few .Junior Varsity teams have ever been Ustacltedl' with such lorcelul power as this team. An excellent bacldield consisting ol Dean Drott, Andy Morlcen, Tom l.ampe, and Keith Mc Clure usually beat at their opponents goal enough to allow the second string to see much action. Jim Timler, huslcy lelt guard who olten switched to the iullbaclc spot, moved along well during the earlier part ol the season and saw varsity action toward the end oi the grid campaign. l lugo Wimmer, right taclde for the Jayvees also saw action with the varsity. At the end positions Coach John Richter usually used Don Kraemer and l.a Vern Krause. The other tacltle was Stanley Kaat, and the other guard, Carlton Schultz, Ronald Rammer was over the ball. These were only the boys in the regular starting lineups, but there were many others who were just as willing to win as the Hstartersn, and showed it by their strong offensive power and concrete delense in games as well as in practice. ,SW ur liliorts l:ailed, But We Tried i'lard First Row: Robert Klarich, Robert Weimann, Melvin Kruis, Duane Lindow, Kenneth Foster, Daniel Oppeneer, Robert Markevitch. This year the musical organizations again played an important role in the life of Central students. The Concert Band, Concert Qrchestra, A Cappella Choir, and Advanced Girls, Glee Club participated in the traditional Midwinter and Spring Concerts. For the first time in six years, these four organiza- tions attended music festivals. The choir and glee clubs traveled to Kaulcauna and the band and orchestra, to Green Bay. Various musical groups such as the swing band, vocal trios, soloists, and a barbershop quartette were featured in the All- School Talent Show. Always on hand, the band plays an important part in every phase of school life. We can always depend on the band to add a dash of color on the football field or to lfeep up our spirit at the pep meetings and at our baslcetball games. The A Cappella Choir, too, talces part in as- sembly programs of a more serious nature, such as installation ofschool officers, and the Christmas and Easter programs. The purpose of the junior organizations is to acquire a clear understanding of the fundamentals of music. Several tests are given throughout the year and membership into the senior organizations is based on these tests. The directors for the year were Mr. Charles lVl. Faulhaber, Concert Band, Junior Band, Junior Girls' Glee Club, Junior Chorus, and Boys' Glee Club, Mr. Vito lntravaia, A Cappella Choir, and Advanced Girls' Culee Club- lV'lr. Donald R.
