To lead us our first year we chose Harold Finley as president with able assistance to be given him by David Emory, vice-president, and Becky Slack, secretary-treasurer. At mid-term we found that through our diligent CPD. study f??J forthy-eight members in our class had been taken into the Junior Honor Society. Our Glee Club under the direction of Mrs. Elsie Thomas won a superior rating at the State Festival in Kingsport, meanwhile, the band, directed by Mr. O'Dell Willis, was off on a trip with the football team to Jackson- ville, Florida. Later in the year they were awarded an A-1 rating at the State Festival in Knoxville. Nancy Rogers represented our class in the queen's court on May Day. The end of the year was upon us, and awards were given out. Mariorie Black re- ceived the P. T. A. award for the highest aver- age in our class, and Sammie Lynn Scandlyn received the P. T. A. award for the second highest average. By Becky Slack's name were recorded the highest grades in English, so she was awarded the English cup. The algebra cup went to Dickie Layman. When we returned to Central for the second time, we had greater plans than ever. To head these plans we again chose Harold Fin- ley as our president. David Emory as vice- president, Bill Kiddwell as secretary, and Jeanne Dodson as treasurer helped us too. Adding her talents to the cheerleading squad was Nancy Rogers. The dramatics department presented the Broadway play The Man Who Came to Dinner, and those from our class who took part were Harold Dean Moore, Louis Bass, Johnny Temple, Don West, and Bob Axley. At T. I. L. L. the play A Gypsy Romance was presented, and it won first place in the district and third in the state. Marilyn Forbes, Harold Dean Moore, Sammie Lynn Scandlyn, and Becky Grove were in the cast. A four-day trip through Kentucky was taken by our band members, and they received an A-rating in both the region and the state. Under the direction of Mrs. Frances M. Yett, the Glee Club was rated as excellent when they attended the state festival in Chattanooga. On May Day, Sammie Lynn Scandlyn was crowned May Queen, and Shirley Hickey was one of the seven in her court. When awards were handed out, the P. T. A. award for the highest average in the sopho- more class went to Jennifer Tipton. Mickey McCord received the English cup, and Dickie Layman again captured the algebra cup. The Latin trophy was presented to Sammie Lynn Scandlyn, and Jerry Edwards, Louis Bass, and Jennifer Tipton were the recipients of the Lucy Templeton Bird Awards. In September, 1953, we became upperclass- men-better known as iuniors. As election time rolled by, we found we had chosen David Emory, president, Ray Jenkins, vice-president, Jeanne Dodson, secretary, and Eddie Town- send, treasurer. We chose John Ed Roberts to help Nancy cheer our athletes on. Mr. Willis again directed our band to an A-1 rating at the state festival in Johnson City. When examinations were over at mid- term, the Senior Honor Society invited 18 members of our class to join their ranks. Girl Shy was presented by the dramatics department, and Harold Dean Moore, Jennifer Tipton, and Beverly Bayless all had leading parts. Shirley Hickey, Sammie Lynn Scandlyn, Marian Felknor, and Nancy Rogers were our May Queen candidates, and Shirley and Marian were in the queen's court. We chose to send Brownie Barlow and Gene Gilley as our representatives at Boys' State, and Barbara Lee represented us at Girls' State. Winning the national title of Boy of the Year was John Ed Roberts. Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Monroe sponsored our all-day outing at Big Ridge to bring to a close our junior year. As our leaders for our most cherished year at Central, we chose Ray Jenkins as our presi- dent. By his side worked Eddie Townsend as vice-president, Jeanne Dodson as secretary, and Sara Warters as treasurer. Miss Hicks, Mrs. Wiles, and Mrs. Murray were chosen as sponsors. At all sports events we were led in our cheers by John Ed Roberts fhead cheerleaderj, Sammie Lynn Scandlyn, and Nancy Rogers. Our band smartly chose pretty Marian Felk- nor as their sponsor, and Betty Thress and Hazel Gaines added class as maiorettes to our outstanding performers. From all the high school bands in the State of Tennessee, our band was chosen to represent Tennessee at the Lions Club Convention in New York City. Bill Walters served as student director, Barney Edwards, as band captain, and Larry Craig, as concert master. A big attraction of the year was Cheaper By the Dozen which was presented by the dramatics department. in the leads were Sammie Lynn Scandlyn, Betty Smalley, and Harold Dean Moore. Ably supporting them were Marilyn Forbes, Emory Jo Williams, and Jennifer Tipton. In the spring the Broadway play Curious Savage was given. Martha Capps, Sue Hileman, Harold Dean Moore, Jennifer Tipton, Shirley Wallace, Betty Smalley, and Patsy' Cox were the actor and actresses. from our class. Ruth Cobble received the D. A. R. citizenship award. Carol Dysart edited our annual, and Mr. Cate sponsored the publication. Leading our football team to the Knox Prep League Championship was Captain Richard Craig and Co-captain Charlie Hansard. The mighty Bobcat team represented Knoxville at the Meninak Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida. David Emory was named to the All-State and All-Southern elevens. Gene Gilley led our basketball team through a most successful season, and Jimmy Dykes was his co-helper. Gene was named captain of the all-city team and was placed on the district all-tournament team. The girls' basketball team was led by Captain Jean Hensley, who was also placed on the all-tournament team. Class night was held May 28, 1954, at the school. On Sunday, May 30, 1954, Baccalaureate was held at Central Baptist Church. We received our diplomas at our graduation exercises which were held in the U. T. audi- torium on June 1, 1954. Jim Cole, Ruth Cobble, Jerry Edwards, Emory Jo Williams, Mary Lynn Nicely, Sammie Lynn Scandlyn, and Margery Black were class speakers. Though the close of this year parts us, to all the faculty who have worked so faithfully and diligently to make our high school days so worthwhile, the senior class of 1954 gives you a sincere Thank You. The knowledge and experiences that we have received under your guidance will, we are sure, enable us to climb nearer our goals in life. 39 mqf ...VW I i 4 L iii 120 --X ? - Ql- ,MQ . at 5 leff Io right: Curtiss Patty, presidenip Tommy Drinnen, vice-presidenff Carolyn Hile- man, secretaryp Walter Thigpen, treasurer. Among our most important socials in the past year were a Christmas Dance, Night Club Party, and Sweetheart Banquet. We also had a week- end House Party in Gatlinburg and are going to Daytona Beach, Florida, for two weeks in June. In addition to our good times, we also did charity work. For Thanksgiving and Christmas we gave three needy families clothes and food, and all the girls did their part in working for charity drives.
