SCHOOL DAYS 9:11 1941 -42 'NS , f. M ,aff sl' 3 Q 'xx llISTOBY 0F THE CLASS 0F 1950 Looking back to the fall of I946, we see ourselves as freshmen wander- ing meekly through the halls of Central. This was to be our h-ome for the next four wonderful years. As soon as we had become accustomed to our new friends and sur- roundings we elected officers. We chose Charles Black, president, Jack Hind, vice-president, Betty Sue Wade, secretary, Barbara Lack, treasurer. We were very proud of our band, which won an A-l rating at the Regional Contest held in Johnson City. Mr. Lillard Luttrell was the director who led us to this victory. Before we realized it the last day of school was upon us and it was time for the awarding of the scholarship cups. Mary Ann Wright received the P.T.A. award for the highest average in the freshman class, and Carlene Ryder was awarded the freshman algebra cup. Our sophomere year we returned with great ambition to further our education. We elected the following officers to guide us through the year: Charles Black, president, Clyde Lamarr, vice-president, Nancy Houser, secre- tary, Barbara Lack, treasurer. To help build up the morale of our team we chose as cheerleaders Nancy Houser and Betty Morris. The dramatics department, under the direction of Miss Ahler, presented the three act comedy, Ready Made Family. Ann Hurst and Walter Brown held major rolls. This year the band went to Chattanooga for the Regional Contest. Once again their hard work was rewarded with an A-l rating. ln the state contest they received an A-2 rating. The glee club received an A rating at the festival held at U. T. The end of school rolled around again. ln the tide of all the awards, it seems that Jimmy Blankenship monopolized the sophomore awards. He won the P.T.A. English award, the award for the highest average, and tied with Frances Riffey for the Thomas E. Ford mathematics cup. Returning in the Fall of '48 we knew everybody and everything. We chose for our junior officers, Wendell Smith, President, Jim Locher, vice- presidentg Jean Dobbins, secretary, Tommy Hensley, treasurer. Betty Morris and Nancy Houser were re-elected as cheerleaders from the Junior Class. Miss Ahler's students presented the 3 act play, Aunt Tillie Goes To Town. in which Ann Hurst and Fred Tedder took leading parts. ln the T.l.L.L. Ann Hurst placed first with her dramatic reading, Rebecca, Walter Brown placed first in the Original Oratory for Boys, and Barri Burrage was on the winning debating team. History was repeated when the band took superior ratings in both the regional and state contests. Al Bundren was Central's representative to Boys' State at Castle Heights and Carolyn Stern was the representative to Girls' State at Bethany Hills. On last day of school we saw Mary Evelyn Stoffell walk away with the P.T.A. award for the highest average in the junior class, and Nancy Naylor received the Honor Society Award for the second highest average. For the last time we approached the steps of Central. We had made many plans for this, our most exciting year at Central. We were to be the leaders of the school. We elected the following officers to guide us through our most im- portant year: Wendell Smith, president, Tommy Hensley, vice president, Jean Dobbins, secretary, and Harry Secrist, treasurer. Betty Morris and Nancy Houser were once again re-elected cheerleaders, and Betsy Harrington was elected to serve with them. Tommy Davis was drum major and pretty Barbara Crippen served with him as sponsor. Betty Tindell and Wanda Flannigan were our two vivacious drum majorettes. The Dramatics Department proved their ability by presenting the three act play, Papa ls All. Leading roles were played by L. D. Strader, Betty Creswell, Ann Hurst, Walter Brown, and Evelyn Wilson. Louis Warwick held a minor role in the play. ln the T. l. L. L. Fred Tedder won top honors in the declamation class and Barri Burrage was on the winning affirmative debating team. A Captain John Bohannon and alternate captain Tommy Hensley led our football team. Howard Hines served as manager for four years. The positions of captain and alternate captain of the basketball team were held by Charlie Taylor and Earl Currington respectively. The Regular Centralite was published by Mary Ann Wright, editor and Carolyn Stern, associate editor. Mr. Paul Cate served as- advisor for both the Regular and the Annual. Jean Dobbins was elected DAR representative from Central. For the first time in the history of Central High, the senior class spon- sored a dance in the gym. Bill Dexter's orchestra furnished the music, and the faculty served as chaperones. Class night was presented in the school auditorium Friday, May 26, l950. Miss Hassie K. Gresham presided over the traditional candlelight service. Baccalaureate Sermon was held Sunday, May 28, l95O, at the Central Baptist Church of Fountain City. Rev. Ned Wylie of the First Methodist Church of Maryville was the speaker. The University of Tennessee Alumni Auditorium was the scene of the commencement exercises. They were held Tuesday, May 30, at 8 p.m. The class speakers were Jimmy Lynn Blankenship and Jean McPhetridge. The guest speaker was Congressman Albert Gore of the Fourth Congressional District of Tennessee. Thus our four years at Central ended. ,We are deeply indebted to all of the faculty and students who have worked diligently to make these years the most memorable of our lives. We want to express our sincere thanks to them. CLASS SONG words by music by Barbara Jones LaMar Embry Farewell to you old Central High, We leaye our love behind, And take with us our memories, The best that one can find. We wish to you our dear old school The best through all the years, To you who've been our dearest friend Through all our joys and tears. You hold the light for future years to be, Oh, lift it high that all who come might see: To thee, our alma mater, We will pledge anew, And in our memories, hold the thoughts Of thee so dear and true. They never gave up, and when the odds were against them, they kept on fighting with that old Central spirit. Captain John Bohanan, All-City Tackle, with the help of Tommy Hensley, alternate-captain, led the Bobcats. Coach Ed Osborne took over the job of head coach at the first of the season. With the aid of Coaches O. C. Lloyd and N. B. Eubank, Coach Osborne did an ex- cellent job Bob Lund was in charge of the B team. Bad breaks and blocked kicks caused the team's loss to our cross town rival, Young. The score board could never show the hard work put into that game by Central. Another heartbreaking game was when Central played Flaget, Kentucky's number two team. The Bobcats held Flaget to a 7-7 tie until the fourth quarter when the opponents scored two touchdowns. ln the annual Turkey Day game against the Troians, the Bobcats gave Knoxville a hard fight and unexpectedly held them to fourteen points. These three games prove that Central had the stuff that makes a good team. At the end of a hard fought season, the Fountain City Lions Club honored the team with a banquet at Whittles. Paul Monger was elected captain for l95O, and Andy Castleberry was named alternate-captain. Thus the i949 season ended. CENTRAL IIN THE llABDWO0D The l949-50 basketball team has had a very successful season. Under the expert guidance of Coach O. C. Lloyd, they won fifteen games and lost ten games during regular season play. The Bobcats were led by captain Charles Taylor, All-City forward, and alternate captain Earl Currington. One of the most exciting games of the year was when Central had little trouble defeating Knoxville High 52-3l. Another thriller took place when Central played Catholic the second time. The Bobcats were out to revenge the earlier loss, and Catholic was determined to keep victory. The final score was 45-36. The Bob- cats' claim to fame came when they defeated Happy Valley, the present state champions, by a score of 43-39 Central was one of three teams that was able to defeat Happy Valley. Of course, the score didn't always come out right for Central, but the team showed great sport smanship in defeat as well as in victory. During the Second District Tournament at Chilhowee, Central defeated Bearden 53-30 and Catholic 32-27 to reach the finals. This game was played against Knoxville High. In the game the team proved they were one of the outstanding teams of this section. The score was nip and tuck all the way, but a basket in the last seconds of play gave Knoxville their hard fought for victory. Both teams were evenly matched and both played their best. ln the Second Regional Tournament, Central was defeated by Alcoa by a score of 43-3l The B team had an excellent season, winning l9 and losing only 2. They had one of the best records for a B team in this area. Mr. Frank Winegar was t heir coach, At the end of the season the team was honored with a banquet at the S 81 W Cafeteria.
