HOLT Guest ,Spe er Executive Secretary of the Tennessee Educational Association V .yhlmfbry oflffre Cfcm of 7 94 9 Let us look back: how green we were: how feeble and faltering our steps! What collisions there were in the halls! What divings into Wrong doors! For we had been catapulted from various grammar schools in Knox County into-what looked to us, at any rate-the giant mill of the Freshman Class of Central High School, there to be ground into scholastic meal suitable to be concreted in time into the good bread of graduates. It was alarming! Until now We had been surrounded by the boys and girls of our respective neighborhoods. Now we were lucky if we en- countered a familiar face. But presently the conditions that seemed so strange became familiar and our nevertheless timid advances to strangers, equally timid, met with friendly response and we settled down. Of the things that our Freshman Class of 1945-46 accomplished we particularly remember: We chose Elizabeth Freels, president, Ramsey Pollard, vice-president: Tom Murrian, secretary: and Dan Baird, treasurer. As we became more accustomed to the surroundings, we began to fit into the various activities of the school. This year the glee club gave an operetta, "Melinka of Astrakanf' We absolutely popped with pride when our band went to Nashville and carried off the high honor of first place in the State Contest. The Dramatics Department staged four one-act plays-"Rich Man, Poor Man," in which Dan Baird took a minor part, "Elmer," "She's a Neat Iob," in which Fran Waugh and Delores Noe held minor roles, and "Happy Iourney," starring Bill Taylor. These many activities did not seem to hinder us, for after mid-term exams, thirty-four girls and fourteen boys were taken into the Iunior Honor Society. Spring brought May Day and our thoughts turned to selecting our fairest ladies. Frances Robbins, Caroline Bailey, Elizabeth Freels, and Marie Kreis were our freshman candidates. Marie Kreis was crowned queen and Ramsey Pollard was chosen as her king. Elizabeth Freels and Frances Robbins were elected to her court. On the last day of school the following awards were given to members of our class: highest freshman scholarship award to Sue Swaggerty, the second award to Betty Chamberlain, and the Freshman Algebra Cup to Gay- nell W'harey. As sophomores we climbed the hill with a little more certainty in our steps, not quite as green as before, but with a slight rose tint to our cheeks. To lead our class for our second year in high school we chose Charles Crews, president: lohn Tumblin, vice-president: Tom Murrian, secretary: and Io Ann Fogarty, treasurer. Our heads were beginning to swell a little like balloons as our band was awarded first place in the Regional Contest and again took first place in the State Contest under the able direction of Mr. Lillard Luttrell, a Central alumnus. The Dramatics Department staged a three-act play, "Hillbilly Court ship," in which. Inez johnson and Ramsey Pollard held major roles and Betty Berry a minor part. Ioyce Bray won first place in the district for her girls' Origi- nal Oratory in the T. I. L. L. Anne Curtis was chosen by the National Girl Scout Council as Tennessee's representative to the International Girl Scout Camp at Barree, Pennsylvania. Again we found ourselves awaiting the momentous occasion of the last day of school and the awards. Patricia Mann won the highest sophomore award and Gaynell Wharey won second place. Gaynell again received the Algebra Cup. By fall when we returned as juniors we were beginning to feel very much at home in the academic grooves of Central and just a little bit im- portant, too, for many of our number won various awards. As worthy leaders we selected Tom Murrian, president: Ed Irwin, vice-president: Dottie Cobble, secretary: and Scott Collins, treasurer. We were deeply affected by Miss Gresham's leaving us. She had been identified with Central for so many years and had given it such a fine reputation. As her able successors we have Mr. L. H. Brickey, principal, and Mr. H. G. Loy, assistant principal. To help cheer cur Bobcat team Marie Kreis and Norman Wininger were ready and willing to take on the job. Cute little Norma Iohnson took over the prancing as majorette. We were proud of our glee club which took an A rating at the festival at U. T. and our band which won the Regional Contest and took second place at the State Contest. In the field of dramatics "Ready Made Family" was given in which Inez johnson and Delores Noe took leading parts. The T. I. L. L. was almost cleaned of its awards by Central students. David Yarnell won scond place in the district for Boys' Original Oratoryz loe Levitt took first place in Extern- poraneous Speaking: Delores Noe received second place for Poetry Interpre- tationg Inez johnson won third place for her Dramatic Reading. On Peter Block Day, Barbara Etherton took the junior scholarship award and Patricia Mann won the second award. Anne Curtis was presented the first place award for her essay on "The Value of Birds" and an award for her poem, "l:'riendship." lim Lett was chosen as the representative from Central to Boys' State at Castle Heights and Gaynell Wharey was chosen to represent us at Girls' State at Bethany Hills. Seniors at last and on top of the world, or, at any rate, on top of the hill, adomed by what is generally recognized as the most beautiful high school campus in the South. In many ways the senior year in high school is the happiest year of the four. Yet it began to be tinged with sadness as spring opened and everything around us looked lovelier and lovlier and we realized that Iune would soon be here when we would scatter and never again be together as a class. I This, our most important year, we elected Tom Murrian, president: Bob Iohnson, vice-president, Bill McCoy, secretary: and Ed Idwin, treasurer. Our lively cheerleaders were Marie Kreis, Norman Wininger, and Ramsey Pollard. Colbert Petree was drum major with pretty Julia Haun at his side as band sponsor. Norma Iohnson was again strutting for the band, and to com- plete the twosome, petite Ieanette Weaver came along. Our band gave us all a pleasant surprise by coming out in new handsome grey and red uniforms. Other band officers include Calvin Wallace, band captain: lack Bannister, student directory and Dan Baird, concertmaster. Our glee club gave a beautiful Christmas concert and "The Nut- cracker Suite." Accompanists included Frances Nell Robbins. The Dramatics Department also showed ability this year in presenting "Aunt Tillie Goes to Town" starring Inez Iohnson, Ramsey Pollard, and David Yarnell. Delores Noe won first place in the district and third place in the state for her essay, "I Speak for Democracy." Our football team was headed by Captain Bob Livengood and Alternate Captain Luke Householder. Eddie Irwin served as manager for four years. Bob Wyrick and Don Ballenger held the positions of captain and alternate captain of the basketball team. The Regular CENTRALITE was ably published by Editor Ioe Levitt. Mr. Paul Cate acted as adviser for both the Regular and the Annual. Elizabeth Freels was awarded the D. A. R. Citizenship Award. We feel very fortunate to have so many who started with us four years ago. We are happy, too, to have welcomed those who joined us later. We wish to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of the teachers and principals for their guidance these past years. We feel that Without their interest, deep understanding, and patient sympathy we could not have accomplished these many things of which we are so very proud and which we will forever hold so dear to our hearts. 1 f :K ' fi I 'E T fm- X nfrC wifi?
