Brehm, Acting President of University of Tennessee a i le arg Ae Lo Reg es es Bere o enn HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF ‘48 One fall day of early September in 1944, we boys and girls who hed never been here before swarmed the halls of Central High School. As freshmen we elected the following stu- denis to serve cs cur cfficers: President, Fred Foxzariy; Vice-President, Charles Secrecy; Secre- tory Re'ty Jo Lamkdin; and Treasurer, Bill Fos'er. Following the mid-term exams, about 60 freshmen were elected to membership in the Junior Honor Society. Jo Ann Cawood was chosen president of the group. When May Day rolled around we selected Jo Ann Cawood, Nancy Keesling, Dorothy Bridges, and Betty Lou Hansard as our comely candidates. At the chapel exercises on the last day of school, the freshmen held their own when the awards were given out. Charles Brite took the L. H. Brickey cup with a 97.5 average. Norma Hale was given the Senior Honor Society Award and Jean Hunter the mathematics award. Again in 1945 we trudged up the familiar hill, this time feeling more secure in our steps. Following the usual procedure we elected Fred Fogarty as class president; Bill Hendrix as vice-pres:deni; Jim Black as secretary; and Bill Foster as treasurer. The dramatic production, “Elmer”, was staged that year with Jo Ann Cawood in one of the starring roles. On Peter Block Day, Juanita Petree and Katherine Blackburn tied for the sophomore scholarship award and Brickey Cup, with Lillian Lennon running a close second. The P. T. A. English cup was given to Juanita Petree and the algebra cup to Lillian Lennon. Charles Brite brought honor to the Latin department by ranking high in national competition. The Glee Club award for advancement was given to Fred Fogarty, who, we found, was both musical and athletic. The next fall, 1946, we, cs great big juniors, and feeling our rating as upperclassmen, elected Fred Fogarty to head the class. Bill Hendrix supported him as vice-president. Taking the stand as secretary was Earl Bohannon and as treasurer, Jim Black. The dramatic department started off its yar by presenting two one-act plays— She’s a Neat Job” and “Never Trust a Man.” Taking leading parts were Jimmy Lovelace, Charles Miller, Ethel Hendrix, and Bob Goddard. Ann Morris and Jo Ann Cawood added color at the football games by leading cheers. Jimmie Leinart and Lois Reighard were the lively drum majorettes leading the band. Later on in the yeor the comedy, ‘’Hillbilly Courtship” starring Bob Goddards, Joan Hubbs, and Phylles Matthews was presented. At the Tennessee Interscholastic Literary League Con- tests Bobby Peek and Helen Goins won honors in extemporaneous speaking and Bob God- dard won an oration contest. Gilbert Trythall won second place in debating and Bobby Peek took first place in the original oratory for boys. When the awards were presented on the last day of school, Juanita Petree won the Brick- ey Cup with the highest average—97.8. The Senior Honor Society presented their award to Ruby Arms. We started our senior year with the realization of how little we knew, a feeling far dif ferent from our very first at Central. This year the traditions of our school are being carried out by our very able new princi- pal, Mr. L. H. Brickey, and our new assistant principal, Mr. H. G. Loy. To lead them in their senior functions, the class elected Charles Searcy as president. serving with him are vice-president Jim Black, secretary Earl Bohanan, and treasurer Hazen Kreis, Jr. The football team was led to victory by their captain, Jim Black and the alternate, Hazen Kreis, Jr. The team experienced one of its most glorious seasons with Paul Rouse carrying off All Southern honors. Also sharing the glory of the season were Jack Adams, Charles Searcy, Earl Bohanan, and Fred Fogarty. Not to be forgotten is Bob Temple who won recognition for his basketball playing, as well as football. Cheering their team on to victory were Ann Morris, head cheerleader, Jo Ann Cawood, Carolyn Evans, Johnny Story, and Jack Mynaitt. Bill Hendrix, as drum major, led the band with Patsy Morriss at his side as the lovely sponsor. Jimmie Leinart and Lois Reghard again lent their charms as majorettes. Katherine Blackburn took double honors—vzarving as editor in-c’-ief cf the Centralite and winning the D. A. R. Citizenship award. Serving as the editor of the Regular Centralite was Charles Weed. So our career as Central High students is drawing to the end and we are now looking into the future. We hope our contacts will coniinue to be as profitable and enjoyable through the rest of our lives as those at Central have been.
