We, the Class of 1929, have tried to uphold this high standard set for us. But we have kept before us another goal, a course of strictest economy, to the end that we might leave behind us not one book, but many. For it has been our high privilege to initiate a library fund, with the hope that succeed- ing classes will continue to contribute to this cause. We feel that we could leave no more lasting or imposing monument to our memory in Central High, nor could we bequeath a more priceless legacy to those who come after us, Be ours the joy of blazing a new trail, theirs the happiness of a dream soon realized. cgxyk 4, N ,' 'G is , W V ,V ,gras f N , T ' ' wlijxkfi, Q Q Eff- J k N31 i Q1 y c ff, f X ix, , e tx X4 ,if--' . CLASS POEM By Mildred V. Floyd Our Class is like an errant knight, Who in his hand does bear A banner 'broidered shining bright With these two words, Be square. This knight is ever wise and goody To truth he always swearsg To aid the helpless he does pause, And happiness he shares. Our knight has battled hard and long, And he has faltered ne'er, But waved his standard 'bove his head With maxim brave, Be square! Thus far and wide he wanders ye He all the danger dares. His armor white is shining bright: His charger, strong and fair. ti He strives ahead and struggles still Against all surging care, And calls aloud his battle cry In fearless tones, Be square ! And in his left hand tightly clasped A laurel wreath he bears, An emblem true of victory And triumph over cares. He labors on with upward gaze However he does fare, And puts his faith in heaven's aid And in his cry, Be square ! His friends admire him and his deeds, His grace and strength so fair. He raises ideals true on high, And strives on toward them e'er. ' ' A' Hark! we hear the beat of drums, And trumpets' lusty blare, And as the throng is greeting him There is a shout, Be square? At that time about fifty sturdy, eager and enthusiastic men reported for duty. It was with difficulty that Coach Banks selected from among these the first and second teams. Later in the season the squad was cut to twenty-five men. The same zeal, vim and enthusiasm which marked the beginning prevailed throughout the entire season. Under the able leadership of Captain Howard Bearden the team won much credit for itself and for the school. B. BANKS The past season proved no exception to the record established by Coach M. B. Banks during his two previous years as football mentor of Central High School. The Bobcat team produced by him went through the season undefeated by any Tennessee high school team, and with only one scoreless tie to mar an otherwise victorious year. Coach Banks believes that spring football practice, introduced at Central last spring had no small part in moulding the efficient gridiron machine. He is holding strenuous workouts again this spring, for which many boys have reported. For the first time in several years Central will have a track team. This team will compete in the County Track Meet organized by Coach Banks in his capacity as Director of Physical Education in Knox County. Assistant Coach Frank Wininger, who developed the Bobcat basketball team this year, has ably assisted Coach Banks during his years at Central. ,il 'SN ' j 1,5 4 ':::7JII1gj.
