Educational and seasonal programs are given here as well as plays and honor and pep assemblies for our students and teams. This year the student body and faculty initiated new seats and floors on the main floor and balcony of the auditor- ium. The change left us with fewer, but nicer, seats of which we can be proud. Here, students watch a skit presented at one of our pep assemblies. l v' fs . le ig gr ., -lgi,QY,gQa ' 'QM X5'wqf1. N 1 Q55 t , mug. ,cb , Q15 3? pf 'S' xx ff x . , in 1. The hallway outside the coaches' office is lined with pictures of our school's past and present athletes. Banners, hickory sticks, and trophy cases filled to the brim denote the many, many awards our athletes have garnered through the years. These symbols represent the strong tradition and spirit that have made Central High School teams continual cham ions in all fields of s ort. P P Central guides our steps toward enlightenment through classes. Kay Parker and Kathy Kaman are seen here hurrying to their sociology class. Over 2200 students walk through these halls daily on their way to classes ranging from algebra to world history. It would take many years for a student to take every course offered at Centralg there' fore, students choose electives to complete their own college preparatory or commercial program. Through these classes we learn the responsibilities of our lives as adult citi- zens. tif! I3 ,Av 417' '37 4 3 K Tick, tick, tick goes the clock above as time passes, but who hears? Everyone is too busy chatting. Meet me under the clock, has become a time-worn expression. The spot under the clock in the main hall has been known for many years as the most noted gathering place before and after school and between classes. The clock has changed in these many years, but the spot under it has remained as the meeting place of the students of Central. 1' 52. Q .Ml A, 3 ,fi if iiE'731f4f' r N It 1 .,., , , .. CLQ55 As the tremendous progress of the jet age continues to reduce the size of the world, more and more students recog- nize the increased need for a know- .3 K ledge of languages. Also students who plan to enter many professions have discovered that the door is closed for those without this training. As an aid in understanding German, Mr. Govern sometimes has his class sing in the foreign tongue. Performing in this pic- ture are, left to right, Phil Horton, Karen Stark, David Hempstead, Gwen Shaw, Douglas Kline, Heidi Haffer, and Gary Feldman. TOWARD ENLIGHTENMENT From freshmen to seniors, the bug of excitement bites us all on registration day. Do we have a class with our friends? Will the cute boy down the street be in our class? Did we get the right teacher for the right subject? As the days rolled by, these questions and many more were answered. We found that even if our friends weren't in class with us, we managed to pass the course. After an interest was taken in a cer- tain subject, the cute boy didn't matter so much. We also found that each teacher could present the subject in an interesting way, hence, the classes took on their import- ance in our everyday routine. . . . gccic, , H i i ACM 'TSQE One of several languages made available to Central students is that perennial fav- orite, Spanish. Part of its popularity stems from its use- fulness in this part of the world. Most Spanish students hope to journey to Mexico one day in order to test their prowess, but Miss Ceyak's students shown here seem to have much more interest in Brazil. There are Jerry Ottow- ski, Karen Blume, Mary Sue Zatarga, Larry Coddens, and Margie McKenzie. l The members of this freshman English class seem eager to answer the questions asked by their smiling teacher, Miss Bennett. Correct use of verbs, proper sentence structure, and placement of adiectives cmd adverbs are a few of the basic fundamentals learned in this first-year course of high-school English. Time spent in classes like this is invaluable, not only for those who face research work in college but also for those who must make their way in a modern world im- mediately after finishing high school. Gone are the days when most employers ignored the lack of a good command of the language. The re- sponse of these students shows their realization of this. Natalie Dowdell, Norma Winther and Jim Crain seem to have ci few questions for their English teacher, Miss Snyder. She generously obliges, for she knows that in a few years the information that she now gives may help her students pass a college theme or write a correct letter of application for a iob. Correct English plays a very important part in our future lives, therefore, classes such as this hold many valuable moments for all attending students. ff' QM, PQ 1.6. l lt has been said that people learn by their mistakes and these students believe that this saying holds true. Here, Bill Floring records his speech as Nancy Miller, Denny Bishop, Larry Morrison, Janet Tiedge, Vivian Gold, and our exchange student, Mitch Arita, listen attentively. After everyone has recorded his speech, Miss Frick will play the recording back to the class. Hearing tapes such as this one enables the students to hear and correct their mistakes so that they may better themselves in their speaking habits. A tn -emu .4t', ,7 ' 'tl ' ' fx A .1 f fiif ff, V , , Q,f'Q5Qw5,'. . , f J? , ,- It might be said that the Barrymores of tomorrow are pictured here in our school's Little Theater. These are the students of a dramatics class discus- sing a skit for dramatization. Often during the year their short programs are presented to the student body. 'Ist row: Donalee Dorhauer, Juli Christ- man, Sheryn Kaylor, Bonnie Banfi. 2nd row: Dallas Baker, Henry Prebys, Dav- id Evns, Pat Hartman, Rex Baker, Irene Johnston. 3rd row: Sue Woof- worth, Marvin White, Shirley Tobler, Gerald Holasz, Thom Sholly. Many of us may ask, What is that strange object? and what are those boys doing with it? The strange obiect is used for the determination of a boiling point, and the boys Kfrom left to right, David Mead, Duane Voitel, and Joe Pap- ail are studying it as a physics assignment. The members of Mr. Cripe's physics classes ore well acquainted with such scientific apparatus, for many of these devices are often used in class discussions and experiments. Unfortunately, this course is often termed difficult, and many are hesitant to elect it. Those that do choose to enroll, however, find that many of their simple, every-day questions are easily answered, and the relationship between the course and problems that often confront the average individual makes the course interesting and stimulating. Girls, as well as boys, are found in the physics class- room, for they, too, are interested in what makes our world go round. This physics lab- oratory at our school guides the steps of the scientists, engineers, and physicists of tomor- row. ,Cf 1' ,Q 'I K., 2 3. kj 1 'A 1 ,J me ,xtilxa T 1 'l s K How is a bill passed? How is the court system operated? How are the Presi- dents and other government workers elected? These are iust a few of the questions answered in government class. Mary Hustead CSL Mary's stud- ent teacherl, Jane Wilburn, Linda Bix- ler, Phil Martin, and Toby Nagy are looking on as Mr. Kuhn shows them the large chart which tells about our government and its Constitution and laws. It also has illustrations of the courts and how they are set up. This government course is required of all students in order that they learn more about the laws and functions of the American Government. One of the many responsibilities of a student teacher is the iob of fre- quently taking over the class, such as Miss Bowling of St. Mary's is doing in Miss Hatt's World History Il class. She and Joe Wesley, Bob Jerzok, Betty Garrison, and Millie Evans step into the past as they study the history of this ancient world. Books, maps, and globes are a few of the things which oid them in their work. At present, locating different countries on the globe seems to be holding their interest. Judy Hurley, Brenda Rousk, and Bob Jones. Trig is used in many occupations, in- cluding mechanics, navigation, and surveying. It is also taken for the prac- tice of thinking soundly. A., 9 ,unrrt ' 3' ':l A v-N 1 ,....-1 6,1 S 5 l l What have we here? It looks like a group of confused mathematicians in Miss Pfaffman's Algebra Ill class. It seems that their assignments are some- times rather difficult, but after a little thought, and many times with the help of Miss Pfaffman, the problems seem to be much easier to solve. What is the purpose of taking advanced math? This is what many of us wonder when de- ciding what subiects to take next se- mester. Making a person think and reason systematically is one good rea- son. Also, in later years it will help us work out numerous problems con- cerning math which will confront us daily. Stuck again! And it always has to happen while I'm taking a speed test! This is the disgusted cry which can be heard by many typing students dur- ing class. lt seems that whenever a person is taking a speed test or hurry- ing to get an assignment done before the dismissal bell rings, the keys al- ways stick. Here, Sue O'Malley has experienced this situation, and Mr. Rowe is showing her how to avoid it. Even though typing class is very annoy- ing at times, it is very worthwhile to take it. Typing can be extremely help- ful in other classes. If students type notebooks or assignments, their work appears neater, and by doing this, they often acquire better grades. if -- Q 1. ,. 'C Assets and liabilities, debits and cre- dits, and many of the other funda- mental business terms are discussed in bookkeeping classes. Here, Judy Pinkerton explains what she has learn- ed to the class. Workbooks that con- tain actual blank pages of a book- keeper's iournal are used in this course in order that the student may put his knowledge directly to use and, there- by, gain much valuable experience. Applicants for jobs in business find that a background in bookkeeping aids them when seeking employment. Also, those students planning to enter col- lege for a career such as accounting find that the direct instruction taken here is of much help. , .J lllli .gin--1 .2 .4 il- What is this? Boys in a home economics class? Yes, they are Bob Barnhart and Emil Barcevic. Of course the girls, Sharon Edstrom and Mary Ann Haringer are right at home. These boys are not the first to elect such a course to their schedule of classes, many have gone before them. They usually are able to hold their own against the girls in the class, and the results of thei' efforts are often surprising! Because a good home is the basis for a good life, courses in home economics are important to us. Through these classes and laboratory periods girls and boys alike le-:rn the fundzrnentzls of a successful home. Besides learning to cook various foods, stud- ents learn the importance of vitamin and color coordination in meal planning, How to control a stubbord child is a problem that is often discussed. Here again, Central guides our steps to a sound home life for our future families. Henry Prebys, who plays Brisemouche, Nancy Opelt, por- traying Mlle. Suzanne De Ruseville, and Paul Shimer, as Prosper Couramont, are featured in this scene from A Scrap of Paper. In this play Louise De La Glaciere, played by Juli Christman, writes a letter to her lover, Prosper Couramont. She later marries Brisemouche and on returning to her former home, finds the letter, which causes a great deal of trouble with her present husband. A Scrap of Paper was staged within three outstanding sets designed by Donn Willman and his committee. These sets brought applause at each opening of the curtains. The play, under the direction of James Lewis Casaday, had many minor roles which were prominent for their bright comical style. The entire cast should be commended for its fine presentation of this comedy. The varsity drag and flapperS were both important in the production of Good News. The musical depicting life on a college campus was entwined with a love conflict. The show was directed by James Lewis Casady. ln this picture, the college students sing Happy Days while cavorting on the campus. With seven of the returning lettermen in the starting eleven, the Bears beat Hammond Noll, 40 to O After a week of practice and running through plays, the team was ready to meet the Mishawaka Cavemen. The squad ran up a score of 32 to 0, an- other impressive victory for the Bears. Following this triumph, Central beat Michigan City, 33 to 6, and completely outclassed the St. Joe Indians, 56 to 7. Our players then met the Washing- ton Panthers and defeated them, 14 to 6. Next, they took on Elkhart and won again, 38 to 7. Then came the only setback of the regular, scheduled season for the N.l.H.S.C. Eastern Division Conference Champs. These four years really sped by, didn't they? Each of us has changed somewhat since we began our careers here at Central. How different it seems from our first year when we were not exactly sure what high school was! As a great many have said before us, we will now be able to say, l am a graduate of South Bend Central. We can all share the same feeling about what we learned from this school through 'classrooms and halls, through people and experiences. How many memories we share - our first day in this school that then seemed so massive and cold, the strangers in our freshman classes that have since grown to be our warmest friends. Exchanging senior pictures, ordering commencement announcements, going to the senior party, taking the senior trip, and attending the senior prom are things we will always remember There were also the pep assemblies and the never dying spirit we carried to all our games through victory and defeat the splendor of queens courts and proms and dances Then too how can we ever forget last year and the final game of the state basketball championship? or the student council elections with the heated discussions about Representative Pioneer, and Student Action? We worked actively for the school through the Student Council and the Booster Club Now as we look back we also look ahead We feel a loss as we turn the pages of our final year book and see our own pictures placed in the senior section, but we also feel a gain a gain of four wonderful years As we part from our friends we go into new worlds worlds of college for some 'obs for others However in our future years we will often pause for memories of Central High School the school which guided our steps 'X Y' H 'L-if Y 4 rl!! Bye, Central: we love ya! 1 x HX' if -vin ai f X, at Li The iunior class officers are seen here on their way to school one morning. Gene Anderson, president, Aleda Hering, secretary: Dale Matthews, vice-president: and Carolyn Horak, trasurer, hurry through the cold to begin their classes. JUNIORS We iuniors were upperclassmen at last. Because of our elevated position we gained such things as better seats at assemblies, candidates in student council elections, and significant positions in various student organizations. Our first big high-school dance, the Junior Prom was held especially for us. For a few hours one morning we gathered together for aptftude tests. Also, we recently obtained our class rings. -This past year we were more accustomed to the classes and activities of high school, and now we look forward to our next and final year. We have completed a major part of our high school course, and our final steps are drawing near.
