Restaurant . . . When appetizing aromas drift through our city at noon, Centrahtes know that tlie cafeteria is the place to head for good food. It is the restaurant of our city. Behind the scenes our able cooks work swiftly and surely to get Tom Turkey ready for our annual Thanksgiving feast. Town Hall . . . Come rain or shink the path is well worn to Zimmcr ' s. CA ' tUral ' s citizens can always be seen lirinking cort ' ee anti discussing the latest exams. Most cities have public meeting jilaces where the [icople congregate to talk with one another. In our city, that place is Zimmcr ' s. Congestion . . . You ' d better hurry to move that car John. It looks as if Mr. McCall is the victim of one of our age-old problems. Central, like most cities, is continually faced with lack of parking space. Teachers and students alike have found themselves trapped between a car and a brick wall at the close of a busy school day. Television . . ♦ Ready: Yol ' re on the air! Our haiul, uiulcr ilic (.lircction of Mr. Singleton, appeared under the lights on a local television program and adikxl a new experience to its held of entertainment. Of course, they were most important to us when they, so many times, yet so capably, played our school song and roused our spirits. «kv TV«.v4 iutf jv Aiw% ' v iuuinumniiw3 (lluir ifi «2 z . 3IHUtf M ' jriirifTJJ ;Ml VCi Improvements . . . New lockers highlighted the third floor this year. With our growing popu- lation, our city added this impr ovement which relieved not only the hat and coat situation but gave students another meeting place. Linda Hass and Bill Floring have scheduled this locker as their trysting place between classes. Wonder what these busy guvs are making now! Always hum- ming with activity, our city ' s wood shop provides many op- portunities for future carpenters. A City of Classrooms . . ♦ The subjects in our city kept us very busy throughout the year. With such a varied program of studies to choose from, most of us were thinking in circles while trying to decide between trig and typing, Spanish and short- hand. But with schedules finally settled, we began our semesters with firm resolutions to get as close to the honor roll as possible. We found that studies in our city could be fun because we laughed and learned at the same time. Our teachers did their best to present even our most difficult subjects in an interesting way; thus, the educational section of our city progressed. Hope the trouble isn t too serious. Whatever it is, this grease monkey should have the situation under control in a short time. Wonder if Jack Taghon is getting messy fingers! He might have before; but with the arrival of this new machine, mess and confusion are kept to a minimum. This makes printing a pleasure for Centralites. 6- s f M .v.. T 3 ud y B ' 7. pr .-i = V, A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE, say these girls; and they prove it. Practical application in sewing class resulted in new suits, coats, and summer cottons for inany girls. (Right) What ' s in the makin here. ' Nancy Wilcox and Judy Grain seem very intent on grating the ingred- ients for a forthcoming edible. t-- vz Movies? We have actors, cameramen, and directors in our city too. This Geometry III class put its newly acquired knowledge to good use by pro- ducing the movie, Teenage Geometry. Its members have proved that learning really can be fun. (Above) The first few weeks in typing class were grueling, to say the least; but now ' we have gained skill and speed, and also an ability that we will always find useful. (Below) Shall I be a secretary? or maybe a doctor? Similar thoughts are probably running through the heads of these guidance students. Guidance classes and teachers are a great help to Central students in deciding their future plans. Special talents are cultivated in our city too. In an art class Jerry Martin and Zigrida Markvarts discuss and display their artistic abilities and tech- niques. Paper, paint and other supplies are blended with ability in these classes, and the result is a colorful show of art work. (Right) Everything from disclssing social problems to making a budget — this is what goes on in Mr. Schultz ' s socioloav class. (Below) And what about letting Indiana ' s eighteen-year-olds vote? Ed Ringer and Myra Stone pay close attention to this ques- tion in a senior iiovernment class. (Lejt) A Lije Magazine writ- ten in Espanol causes much interest in this Spanish class. Nancy, Ruth, Dennis, and Pat can put their Spanish to practical use and enjoy themselves at the same time. (Right) Advanced Latin stu- dents listen as Mr. Her- ringer, Nancy Brandon, and Jane Housman translate one of the in- teresting lines of Cicero. Jim Fenters, Elinore Moss, Carolyn Lippert, Jack Miller, and Cliarlenc Hans seem to be very interested in rock collecting. Could they be looking for gold, or is their interest purely scientific? Explosion anyone? Here in the chemistrv laboratory we saw the words and diagrams from our textbooks come to life. Many of our why questions were answered by per- forming and observing experiments. Take a letter girls, are the words of our shorthand teachers. After spending a few weeks wondering if we will ever understand this strange new language, we begin to take dictation and are on our way to secretarial careers. 9 - ■-ic-. A KNOWLEDGE OF THE MECHANICS of 3 Car IS important too, says Mr. Emrick. Driver education class was invaluable to many students. Learning to cope with the problems of a flat tire or those of an oncoming car has made the members of this class safe and reliable drivers. (Left) BONJOUR, MON AMIE. ToiB Gates puts his French to use as he greets Diane Doty, while Sandra High listens and Joyce Redling selects background mu- sic. French classes get more than book knowledge. They study French people, sing French songs, and practice practical conversa- tion. (Rig ' n) Well, John Fill, those are weighty words! It looks as if this creative expression class is closely following the comments of its latest orator. Our city ' s not behind — either in conveniences, or girls. These Esther WilHamses are making sure their liair is shipshape by using Central ' s new hair dryers located in the pool dressing room. Judy Wright, Marlene Lambert, Joan Niezgodski, and Aleda Hering seem to be sold on these dryers, too. iMrtl These female Robin Hoods, Joan Carter, ' ivian Wharton, and Charlotte Taylor, are working at one phase of the senior gym program which includes bowling, table tennis, and golf. Miss iMathews ' senior girls are learning skills they ' ll enjoy long after they ' re out of school. Tom Joyce, Janice Riley, and Bob Silver are all ears as Mr. Powers points out the intricate parts of this organ. Health classes prove valuable to Centralites for learning good health habits. Be sure to keep those numbers straight, Janice. Mr. Dickey is explaining the importance of accuracy to his bookkeeping class. His advice will prob- ably help these students to keep their own records straight in future years. ! A City of Activity Is THE Student Council meeting first or third hour. ' Where is the Junior Red Cross meeting this morning. ' These queries could be heard in the halls on Tuesday morning or any other morning when our clubs happened to be meeting. Of course, along with studies, activities played a large part in our life at Central. What city could run effectively without certain acti- vities to keep its citizens on their toes, always ready to promote interest in its advancement. ' All of us went to meetings, took part in money-raising campaigns, and boosted school spirit through these activities, all the while making new friends and gaining experiences in being part of a successful city. P o © •m INTERLUDE Yearbook How MUCH DO THEV OWE, Myrna and loan? These girls are busy counting receipts to make sure everyone will get his yearbook. Left to right: M. Boyer, S. Tarnosv, F. Makris. C. Mager, and M. Beard. Yes Mr. Madden, that deadline is creeping up. Ruth Rague, Sue Hoehn, and Rick Bass are really rushing to meet it, too, by getting all those pictures ready and the copy written. INTERLUDE Newspaper Monday comes to the INTER- LUDE Newspaper office and finds the editorial staff and typ- ists putting the pajier to bed. Stories are read, corrected, and approved; then all copy is sent to the printer to meet a four o ' clock deadline. As Kay Klopfenstein types a last minute scoop Linda Rixler, Larry Morrison, Charlene Peretti, and Editor Tom Gates check stories, write and count type for headlines, and put the finishing touches to each page. Mr. Cassidy, INTERLUDE fac- ulty advisor, appears on the scene to lend his able hand to the en- tire staff at all times. Barbara Stegman, Dew Ann Drout, Ruth Rague, and Judy Johns welcome his assistance. Thom Sholly is finding trouble in expressing his affections for Donna Lee Dorhauer. Rosemary Work- ing isn ' t making things any easier for him either. This scene took place in the Drama Class ' s presentation of The Ghost Story. Duke Ruzinoff finds himself surrounded with beautiful Rootsie Pootsie girls in this colorful scene from The Count. Johanna Oakley and Col. Jefferey, known to Centralites as Debbie Boughner and Bill Harman, engage in a very serious conversation in Sweeney Todd. The Senior play, entitled Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, featured Dwight Oberholtzer as Sweeney and Sharon Pollack as Mrs. Lovett, who together fur- nished the ingredients for, and also made, delicious human meat pies. The air grows tense in this scene as the conflict between Sweeney and Mrs. Loxett deepens. A City of Sports . . . As IN MOST SCHOOLS, sports hgured prominently in our lives. Recreation in any city plays an important part in its growth, through fellowship and the spirit of competition. Through sports we found many hours of enjoyment. None of us will forget the exciting football games for which we braved cold winds and brisk fall evenings to cheer our Bears on to victory. Then came basketball and the race for the front row seats of the bleachers. With spring ' s warm sunshine we advanced to the tennis courts, track field, and golf course. Our baseball nine grabbed their bats and gloves and headed for the diamond. Our smooth Bear swimmers and wiry wrestlers kept us busy run- ning back and forth from the pool to the mats. This is how our busy sports schedule continued throughout our city. Central quarterback, Joe Winston (58), is spilled after a short gain early in the big Adams- Central clash. Joe Winston (58) falls to the ground in a futile attempt to gain additional yardage in the Adams game. Looking on is Willie Wil- liams (79). Our 1956 Central Bear football team, behind the coaching of Bob Jones and his assistants, finished the campaign with a 7-2 mark. The Bruins lacked the strong defense of last season, but made up for it with a powerful offense. Quar- terback Joe Winston led the team in scoring, but was helped greatly by the rest of the fast backfield, com- posed of halfbacks Melvin I oss and George Byers, and fullback Marvin Ingram. Capt. Lee McKnight teamed up with Dick Symczak to provide capable pass-receiving. The rest of the line was made up of tackles, Gene Stokes and Dale jVIatthews; guards, Willie Williams and Ciuy Curtis; and center. Bob Young. Mike Sacchini and Melvin Holmes helped greatly on defense. Central started the season with an impressive 33-7 victory over Fort Wayne Central Catholic. Then the Bears met a tough LaPorte squad, but won the see-saw battle in the last period 25-20. In the next three grid tilts. Coach Jones men ran over three conference foes by defeating Riley 19-0, crushing Washington 34-0, and ripping Fort Wayne North Side, 35-14. Next, the Bears met strong Mishawaka. Penalties and eight fumbles contributed to our loss of this decisive battle. The game ended with the Cavemen on top, 14-0. The Central Bears got on the winning track again by whipping tough Hammond Noll, 27-7, and a weak Goshen squad, 33-0. The season finale was with our traditional rival, John Adams. Both teams were tied for first place in the conference. Unfortunately, the Adams team defeated our Bears 21-0 before going on to win the Northern Indiana title. Fullback Marvin Ingram (69) bar- rels through an opening for a big gain in the Adams game as George Byers (66) gets set to throw a block. ' It Certainly looks as though Shirley Howell has suddenly obtained a pair of wings ahead of her time. These members of the Girls ' Athletic Association are always busy with an endless number of activities. They are not only learning skills which will bring them pleasure after school, but they are contributing to the activities of the school. Back row: C. Jurck, S. Haniblem, G. Minder, E. North, M. A. Judy Grain, president of the organization, joins in an informal discussion of recent and forth- coming activities. The boys of our city aren ' t the only ones who are skilled with a basketball. These G.A.A. girls show talent on the basketball court too. Mr. Ferrell, our principal, tries to outsmart his son John in a close game of checkers. Richard Ferrell quietly observes while the two opponents match wits. Always busy with school affairs, Mr. Ferrell can find time to relax for an evening with his sons. Administrators - Teachers Our city has an outstanding record of scholastic achievement. The main reason for this is our excellent faculty. Our teachers are capable and are always willing to help us, whether our difficulty is in learning our French verbs or chemical equations. They do their best to make the learning process an enjoyable one. Mr. Richard, our assistant principal, is continually busy with any num- ber of jobs, ranging from giving exit passes to detecting unexcused absences. While part of his work involves some unpleasantness for wrongdoers, any student will find him more than willing to help at any time with both school and per- sonal problems. Mr. H.arter, our head counselor, guided our senior class through four years of school. He has been our counselor, teacher, and most important, our friend. His door has always been open, and his friendly advice has helped us make many important decisions. Mr. Barnbrook, the junior high principal, is not seen often enough by the senior high because his work keeps him very busy in the junior building. With his help the junior high students will soon be an active part of the senior high. ictTIiM I The news of the death nn Miss Jeanne Gienand on De- cember 13, 1956, saddened our entire school. She had been a popular German and French teacher at Central for thirty years. Her gay spirit and personality made her a favorite of both students and faculty during her stay with us. None of us who knew her will forget either the knowledge or the joy that she added to our lives. Morning comes to the office bringing our teachers bright and early t o pick up mail or any announcements which may be in their boxes. The teachers of the English department take advantage of a few extra minutes to relax and converse before the meet- ing begins. Coffee is the order o;- the day in the cafeteria as a few of our teachers take a breath- cr from their busy class schedules. Miss Jaxet AsotRsox M.A. Imlian.i Univcrsitv Mrs. Wanita Hall )■. Indiana University SENIORS We Look Back On Our City The last year in our city went too fast. The time sped on as we danced to our favorite bands and cheered our Bears on to victory. We rushed about making sure that tickets to the senior play were being sold, and we knew our Christmas party was the best yet. In May came one of our biggest events, the Senior Prom. When yearbooks arrived and we made commencement plans, we realized that our last days at Central were drawing to a close. Along with the social life, came the confusing thoughts about what to do after high school. Many of us busied ourselves looking for jobs while others beat a steady path to our counselor ' s office, looking for college bulletins. We will never lose the memories of four exciting, wonderful years spent in our city. The teachers and friends we have known made our senior year un- forgettable. A LOT OF WORK goes into the senior play, and the Senior A class officers want to do their share. Margie Boyer, Tom Gates, Carol Posick, and Moe Hobbs are finishing up on retouching sets and sweeping the stage. This musical quartet is practicing up before the Sen- ior Christmas party. The Senior B class is lucky to have a talented foursome like |im Grille, Dwight Oberholtzer, Bill Harman, and Shirley Bill for their class officers. Brett, an honor student, also received a I2800 scholarship and will be aided by Westinghouse throughout his col- lege career. Our entire school is very proud of this outstanding senior who certainly deserved this great honor. One of the biggest moments in the life of a junior occurs when he walks into Berg ' s and orders his class ring. The junior class officers are making this important buy now. Dew Ann Drout, secretary; Sandra Piechoski, treas- urer; and Larry Morrison, president, stand by eagerly waiting for Denny Bishop, vice-president, to make sure his ring will fit. During the past year some of us have been preparing to say goodbye while others have just been getting acquainted. We ' ve taken a short trip through our beloved city and have tried to review the parts of our school life that make Central great in our minds. Central has its problems, ranging from those in the traffic vein to the academic ones. We have government, recreational facilities, educational opportunities, and friends and teachers that are vital to our growth and development. Many students will be walking the halls of our city for the last time, and many for the first. To those who come after, the seniors wish the best of luck, along with the hope that they will preserve the qualities and ideals that make Central a great city. This year seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen have grown, worked, and played together, always having our motto, I will keep faith, in our hearts and minds.
