As Time Goes By at Central High . . . CONTENTS v ' All the little pieces of knowl- edge are cemented together with time and study. This past vear we have tried to make the foundation for life a little more solid. Athletics . . . The word comes from the Greek, meaing to contend for a prize. As we partici- pated in the various sports during the year, our prize was not just the elation of victory or the disa ppointment of defeat, but the experience of good sportsmanship and fellowship. Faculty . . . As another year commenced, the teachers were always ready and willing to take the time to give advice or to help in anv way they could. They were friends, who helped to direct the course of our lives along progressive and right- eous paths. Seniors . . . The gathering under the clock: the cramming for exams: the teachers and the buildings: the assemblies: and all the school activities — these things are now only wonderful memories to the seniors. But they are not for- gotten and they are looking forward to the future. Underclassmen . . . In these earlier years, we all idolized the seniors and tried to be more like them. Now. as the wonderful high school vears end for many, the un- derclassmen are the ones to be envied. With Christmas behind us, we look forward to the Spring season ahead. The All-City Prom is the first of many gav affairs of the new semester. There ' s Time For Larnin ' Too . . . Studying in a cozy corner is Lee Van Tornhoiit ' s idea of a perfect evening at home. Marvelous re- sults, too! -r v In Spanish class James Cobb points out some of the pronunciation svmbols to Gail Miller. Perhaps we have two future architects in our midst. Well, at least Ted Wynne and Jon Swartz- baugh are working at it in Mechanical Drawing. Mr. Kuhn is getting the facts about the working of political machinery from his class in Government. Mr. Hover seems to want Oscar to join in the conversa- tion in the Biology class. Den- nis Harden is coaxing him, too. In Mrs. Butcher ' s Art class the line is the thing, no matter whether it ' s horses or a pretty Shorthand notes look Greek don t they? It ' s really the secretary ' s way of writing Dear Sir ! Geonietrv presents its problems. Now kids, see if it s possible to trisect an angle. Impossible? Our new chem lab mav be in danger if someone gets his hands on the wrong acids. Shall I be a teacher, chemist, or businessman? Mrs. Peterson is helping these students with their future careers. Let ' s see those muscles being used, bovs: there may be a future All-American among you! ou can hardly find these any more! It ' s an old English pub model that George Petit made for Miss Bersian s Lit Class. Analyzing the make-up of the Trib really gets down to brass tacks for Mr. Cassidy ' s budding journalists. Future homemakers are learning a few of their duties from Mrs. Shaw. George Petit has been keeping; Cen- tral s halls decorated with his posters and is now using his talents for mod- ern art. Faster n faster — the girls are learning to tvpe business letters with real efficiency and speed. The way to a man ' s heart is through his stomach. These girls are getting a head start in learning the art of cooking and preparing yummy meals. Is this the way our jazzy pep banc practices its numbers? Looks lik fun! Anyone for rabbit stew? 1 don ' t think that ' s what is in the minds of these kids, though, as they dissect a rabbit in Biology class. In auto shop our boys learn just how modern cars tick. Rich- ard Pietraszewski is draining the radiator of this buggy. Now this is what we call a car ! Mr. Powers might be telling his students the first time out. Richard Bass, Janet Schurfeld, Susan Schmidt, Betty Dell, Mr. Powers, Pat Cunningham, Barbara Konindiewicz, and Harry Jozwick are going over the car in order to ilri e it better later. Take good care of yourselves, vou belong to us! We learn fundamentals of health right here in school. Understanding today ' s social relationships begins in Mr. Schultz ' s classes. e all benefit from our well organized assemblies. The variety of them pleases all of Central ' s student body. We give a big hand to the participants. In Cafeteria we stand like birds in the wilderness — waiting to be fed. Oh, how time flies ! It all can ' t be said in those five minutes between classes. The Salt and Pepper Shake was the first big event for the Sophs this fall. It reallv was great, too. The Lettermen have started sponsoring matinee dances for all the kids after school. Tom Gore and his Redtoppers play- ed for them and wt all really enjoved the new addition to school activities. The Latin Club had a good old fashioned American picnic earlv this fall and reallv had a ball. onder if we ll spend all our classes this way sometime? The French and German Clubs, combined, had a picnic too. Ma be the foreign customs appeal to us more than staying indoors. It was loads of fun. though. THE BARNSTORMERS Barnstormers has inueli to offer to anyone who has a genuine interest in drama and the details of putting a plav on the boards. The experiences and associations we gain are numerous. Responsibility, appearing before the public in a production, and the first taste of stage fright are among the few oppor- tunities we are offered bv the Barnstormers. ARMS AND THE MAN: the production of Shaw ' s ARMS AND THE MAN enlivened our first semester. The three shots on this page are taken from var- ious scenes from the play. Coach Bob Jones ' 1955 Bears, playing unpredict- able football throughout a listless season, concluded their campaign with an average 5-4 slate. The Bears, rated as a powerhouse in preseason polls, employed a stout defense but were hurt by the lack of any substained offensive production. The defense, led by six seniors — tackles Dale Rems and Ed Nailon, guard Ed Krulewitch, linebacker John Beissel, halfback Ron Janowczyk, and safetyman Tom Borges; three juniors, end Lee McKnight, center Guy Curtis, and halfback Lee Reed; and two sopho- mores, end Mike Sacchini and linebacker Melvin Ross — proved immovable. The offense, failing to click according to the pre- season forecast, redeemed itself in the season finals, trouncing city rivals Adams, 23-12. Ends McKnight and Dick Szymczak, tackles Rems and Nailon, guards Krulewitch and Bob Million, center Curtis, quarter- back and Capt. Gene Strozewski, halfback Jano- wczyk and Tom Redding, and fullback John Beissel comprised the starting offensive lineup. Using their standard pattern, a rock-like defense and punchless offense, the Bears had enough steam in their first two ball games to squeeze by Gary Roosevelt and LaPorte by the identical score of 6-0. Then thev fell into a slump which saw Coach Bob Jones ' men onlv muster thirteen points in their next three encounters, falling victim to Conference oppon- ents Riley 0-6, Washington 7-13, and Fort Wayne Northside 6-9. Finally they showed signs of living up to advance predictions, and finished their season in a blaze of power, beating Mishawaka 18-0, Goshen 18-0, and Adams, losing onlv to a tough Hammond Noll crew 0-6. in a game that could easilv have gone either way. We knew we could do it and we did. Leading the Bears for 1955 grid season was Captain Gene Strozeicski. Gene, used as an offensive quarter- back, was the team ' s leader and pro- vided the spark needed by the squad. Principal R. T. Ferret hands Dale Hems the Kitvanis Award given to the player nho has best combined scholastic and athletics abilities. Athletic Director Ross Stephenson awards to John Beissel the Gold Award presented to the most valuable player. Borders, House, Blume, Nagy, Lark, Lester, and Lee. BASKETBALL Our coaching staff, known for their outstanding teams throughout the state, are Head Coach Elmer McCall and Asst. Coach Bob Turnock. Playing one of the toughest schedules in the state, Coach Elmer McCall ' s 1956 Bears rolled to a highly respectable 17-8 slate, good for a second place rank- ing in the EMHSC. Playing in streaks, the Bears opened the cam- paign by losing to Gary Roosevelt, 47-46, squeezing by Hammond, 64-61, and falling to Logansport, 59-57, before embarking on a streak which saw them win eleven games over several formidable foes while los- ing only twice, both times to Lafayette .Jeff ' . But the cold streak came as the Bears lost to Anderson, Mish- awaka, and Fort Wayne North Side, depriving them of a chance to share or own the EN1HSC crown with Elkhart, whom they beat 77-62 in the season finale for a 13-7 season record. In tournament play the McCallmen advanced to the finals of the regionals, where they met their match in the form of Elkhart, 59-53. The loss set their over-all season and tourna- ment mark at 17 won — 8 lost. Bv tournament time, Mr. McCall had settled on John and Sylvester Coalman at forward, Dale Rems at center, and Lee McKnight and Herb Lee at guard for his starting lineup. Mr. Ferrell was Assistant Director of the Athletic office in South Bend, and Principal of Jefferson Jr. High. Mr. Ferrell said the biggest thrill in his teaching career was when he was appointed Principal of Central High School. hile ser ing thirty-two months in the navy, he was appointed Lieutenant. During these thirty-two months he visited such places as England, France, and Germany. His unit also participated in the invasion of Norm- andy.
