FRANK E. ALLEN Superintendent R. T. FERRELL Principal JOHN CASSIDY Adviser NANCY DUMONT .... Editor Jhls Ujear September 7, 1954 Vyur Liue5 une 10, 1955 Though brief as compared with the centuries of time, this year was important because it was another step in the preparation of ourselves, as individuals, to assume a position in the world. In this year, we have gained knowledge and we have become more qualified to deal with the problems of life. The year has contained many happy experiences: We all danced on clouds at the prom; we cheered and urged our teams on to victory at the games; we sat with awe and expectancy at the wonderful dramatic productions; we were calmed by the serene music of our own musical groups — yes, we have had a full year, and a very valuable one. The most renowned in- structor, EXPERIENCE, has tutored us in many golden lessons. This has also been another year in the life of our school. Being the mother of South Bend schools, it once contained the office of the Superintendent of Schools. Central was a very small schoolhouse and has grown into a very large structure. This is Centrals eighty-fifth year as a high school. As we stroll leisurely down the beloved halls, we observe many changes that have taken place during the year. There is the attractive redecoration of many parts of the school, the varnishing of the stage floor, the new piano in the glee club room, and many others. In these many new improvements, our school is growing in a new and better way and has attained a place in the educational foundation of our nation. This, another year in our lives, has also been another year in the life of our nation. From the battle of Valley Forge through the familiar battles of Korea, our men have paid the great price of blood, sweat, and tears for our freedom. We are greatly indebted to them for their efforts and it is our task to preserve the priceless heritage they have won for us. The time is drawing near when we will have to carry on the affairs of our nation .... In this year of our lives we have prepared ourselves so that we might continue to make our nation a cit- adel of democracy with liberty and justice for all. T.i m ' TTl erein i Je kali rlnd . . . C cti tit ucauon During this year we continued our education. Most of us acquired a taste for education. All of us gained some- thing no one can take away. -Attteli cs This year we were very proud of our teams; proud of their good sportsmanship, their integrity, their will to win, and their won-lost records. 3. cultu This year they were probably much the same as in other years, but because they were ours — not our older brothers, sisters, ' or friends ' — each was someone very special to us. emors This is the year which we have been anticipating — the conclusion of one stage and the beginning of another . . . the saying of good-bye to fond memories and dreaming and planning for the future. Ulnae rclc addmen These were the years of growing up — getting to know one another and making new friends. Yes, these were the years of learning to be good citizens. S B — _ — p w Centrals tradition of tine sportsmanship, a high academic standard, good citizenship, character, and integrity began when she graduated her first small class many years ago. We, of today, should contribute to this tradition, which has been so carefully preserved through the years. We should consider our stained glass window and the ideals it portrays. Most important of all we should hold fast to our motto — We will keep faith — as citizens of our school, our state, and our nation. The French students shown above are enjoying a well-deserved Christmas party. Along with verbs and pronouns, the language students learned the customs and his- tories of other countries. Members of the foods class watch two culinary artists prepare vegetables; only one of the ways in which they learn to be good cooks. The shop students are known throughout the city for their skill in machine work. Watching a pulley experiment are two physics students. The involved experiments and rugged tests made this class difficult, but interesting. The creative writing class soon found that group discussion of themes was much better than in- dividual criticism. Playing on a rain-soaked field, the teams failed to score until the Panthers mustered a touchdown with just three minutes remain- ing in the contest. The Bears fumbled on their fifteen and just three plays later Gary scored on their only completed pass of the showery evening. THE GRIDIRON MENTORS. For the first time in football history Fort Wayne defeated Central as the Bruins suffered their sec- ond successive setback, I 3-6. The Bears wasted no time in scoring as Jim Zielinski countered with just 2:39 having elapsed in the opening quarter. Highlight of the drive, which started from the Central twenty-three, was a fifty- seven yard sprint by Ronnie Janowczyk. Poor punts set up both Redskin scores. Washington ' s Panthers proved just too much for the Bears to handle as they defeated Coach Jones ' men, 26-7, before 8,000 onlookers. Taking advantage of a fumble on the opening kickoff, the Bears scored early in the quarter with fullback Otha Lake barreling over from the two. The lead proved short lived, though, as Washing- ton soon tied the score. Three second-half touch- downs by Washington brought the final count to 26-7. A blocked punt proved the margin of victory as Central rolled to its first victory of the season over a highly favored Mishawaka eleven by the score of 14-13. The Bears scored midway in the first period when Ron Janowczyk bulled over from the three. The Cavemen scored early in the second period with Deal going over. Otha Lake scored for Cen- tral early in the second half on a seventeen yard sprint. When Mishawaka scored in the final period e stage was set for John Beissel ' s block. Playing in a steady downpour and on a flooded gridiron, the Bears sloshed to a 6-0 victory over the Fort Wayne Central Catholic Irish. The only score of the game came on a twenty- six yard jaunt by quarterback Gene Strozewski in the second quarter. The Bears completely domin- ated the contest, as evidenced by only one first down for the Irish. Again playing in the rain and mud, the Bears had to be content with a 13-13 tie with Adams, even though they led almost the entire game. Dan Mathews scored as the Bears tallied the first time they had their hands on the ball. Moments later, after a fumble by Baird, Otha Lake rammed over from the one. Adams scored both touchdowns in the last six minutes of the game. Displaying their most potent offense of the season, the Bruins rolled over the Goshen Red- skins, 34-6, on snow-covered Forman field. Tom Redding scored early in the first period on a ninety-two yard sustained drive. With Red- ding and Mathews scoring in the second period, the Bears had an easy time of it. Ron Janowczyk and Gene Strozewski made the final two touch- downs for the Bruins. Playing fine football for all but eighteen sec- onds of the game, Central trounced the Elkhart Blue Blazers, 12-6. On the opening kickoff Don Barber galloped eighty-nine yards for the touchdown for the Blaz- ers. Midway in the second period, Gene Stroz- ewski scored for the Bears from the two. Tom Redding broke up the ball game as he dashed fifty-nine yards for the score with jus t five minutes of play left. Playing inspired football, Central came within one touchdown of defeating the Riley Wildcats in the final game of the season. Fred Odusch and Dick Vincek both scored touchdowns as Riley built up a 13-0 lead. Mid- way through the third period, the Bears started a sustained drive from their own four. With Gene Strozewski running for gains of thirty-eight and forty-eight yards, the Bears mustered a score. The game ended with Riley the victor, 13-7. Coach Ross Stephenson plans half-time strategy with the Bears in the hopes that the chalk talk will pay dividends. It did, as the Bruins went on to upset the Mishawaka Maroons, 14-13. The Bears score one of their two touchdowns against Elkhart as Gene Strozewski bulls over from the one. Final score of the thrilling contest which was played at School Field was Central 12, Elk- hart b. Pigskin tenseness mounts as mud and rain fly. Though playing one of the rougher schedules of Hoosier prep teams, nevertheless the Whiz Kids, as they were sometimes called, did manage to amass a record of ten wins against eleven losses. Losing their first two games against rated teams — Gary Roosevelt and Hammond — the Bears then went on to whip East Chicago and Logans- port. Thus was the story of the season — win one, lose one. Seniors Danny O ' Donnell and Leland Yockey were the main stars of the team, while juniors Dale Rems, Jessie Bush, Dick Holdeman, and sopho- mores Herb Lee, Lee McKnight, and John Coalmon all played excellent ball at times. High scorer for the year was Herb Lee with a 16 point average. Danny O ' Donnell won both the Kiwanis award for scholarship, sportsmanship, and citizenship, and the Gold award for the most valuable all around play- er on the team. In or out? I can hardly wait for the one next year when were seniors. And so it goes with the junior class. The committee planned the posters, tickets, decorations, pro- grams, refreshments, the good time — in short, Stardust Fantasy, the Junior Dance. f M % J f fit James Adoir Jean Adoir Adorns Adelsperger Aftowski Alrfridi Allsop Anderson Anton Badowski Boer Banacki Banicki D.
