UNDER THE CLOCK- Traffic snarls, thatls it, traffic snarls- no other hall in the Main Build- ing oifers such an opportunity for a last Word before the next class. A Wfmemwwa be .ts DEDICATION FOR more than thirty years Francis S. Sanford taught at Central, which school he fondly called The Home of the South Bend Bearsf' He was respected by faculty members and students alike. In his classes every- thing was put on a competitive basis. The students didn't have tests, just friendly competitions. The first one to complete a difficult experiment Was certain to be re- warded by a tap on the old bell on the laboratory table. By Walking around the desks, being certain that students were making no drastic mistakes, giving a Word of cheer to everyone Mr. Sanford made chemistry one of the most interesting sub- jects in the school. - 1 -Photo by ciariton FRANCIS S. SANFORD It has been just a little over a year since Mr. Sanford passed away. The students who knew him will never forget him. It seems that his spirit Will linger forever in the laboratory which he made his second home. Because of his love for Central and her students, and in recognition of his long period of loyal service to our school, We, the students of Central, Wish to dedicate this yearbook to the memory of Francis S. Sanford. On Nov. 25, 1953 a memorial assembly was held in the Central auditorium for Mr. Sanford. At that time David Novvacki, '53, presented to the school on behalf of Mr. Sanford's chemistry students the plaque shown opposite. This plaque is to hang in the chemistry laboratory. um nm i iii M MURAL IN ROOM 105 - Painted by Fashion Design classes and illustrates the influence of historic costume on modern fashion design. As We prepare to receive our diplomas, which symbolize our graduation from high school, We cannot help recalling the days We have spent together. We remem-ber the friends we made, the academic progress we achieved, and the activities in which we participated, Perhaps one of our lingering memories is the motto which has guided Central stu- dent for many years. I WILI, KEEP FAITH. Keeping faith has many phases: our attitude toward the World about us, our devotion to our religion, and of course, our allegiance to ourselves. During our high school days, we have found that by having faith in what we were doing and by keeping faith in ourselves. each task became a little easier, and the satisfaction in work Well done became greater, If we compare our life to a ladder and each rung a final goal, success, We ind that our the progression from the Hrst rung. step towards the graduation marks Many of us will climb higher, and some will reach the top. In so doing, again each rung will represent an im- portant step in our lives. As we advance, we can see that in the same manner we have kept faith while scal- ing the hrst rung. so must we always keep faith. When we have achieved success, we must ask, did we succeed and yet fail, in that we did not keep faith with our- selves? 'Ihen we can understand what Shakespeare meant when he said, And ulnoue all to thine otunself be lruef' On behalf of the members of the 1954 graduating class, I should like to thank our parents and teachers who helped us to keep faith throughout this first phase ot our lives. Io you, my fellow members of the IQ54 graduat- ing class, go my heartfelt thanks for giving me the honor of being your leader. I am sure I speak for all of us when I say our years together will never be forgotten, No matter where our lives may lead us, we can be confident that Central, and all it stands for, will remain a part of us forever, O AL,- I O DAIRY COUNCIL O lSA1.UI'ATORYl O OF sfr. CORNERS OF POWER SEWING AND COOKING ROOMS IN JR. BUILDING government, and the suppression of all that is good and just. The other fold displays the peace-loving nations of the world. standing united, ready to face that which may come, in order to preserve the precious gift of free- dom which they have bestowed upon their peoples. Yes. we may well be confused. Does the future hold for us happiness or does it hold d.struction? Will modern man achieve his great potential, or will he fall by the way- side of vengeant progress f the victim of Atomic devas- tation? These questions cannot be answered. So as we look forward today. we nnd that some- thing is necessary for survival in these troubled times - something upon which we may build our future. That something is not military force or defense, for that we possess. Rather than these tangible evidences of cold reality, we find our necessity to be of a different nature. This need is faith-faith in all mankind. It is our hope that the powers of good. will reign supreme, and we shall live in a world where all men are masters and none are slaves. lt is the faith that America shall re- main the bastion of liberty, the reservoir of freedom Q- from which all nations may draw strength. Above all. we must trust that within the human mind lies the power to cope with all things. We must not forget, however. that it is only the educated mind which can shape the destiny of democracy that is the birthright of every human being. If we move forward with intelligence, courage, and, most important, faith, the future will not be dimmed by the tarnish of war, and we shall find free men every- where, living together in happiness and peace. y631'. ll7AI.EDICTiORYl WE WILL KEEP FAITH IN OUR RELIGIONS ROY HOLMES MARCIA DAHLKF PQERNARD lVllNKOW This evening, we, the graduating class of nineteen hundred and fifty-four. are observing the completion of one of the most influential steps in our lives. What we have accomplished in the preceding years will determine to a great extent our success in the future. On taking our places in society the knowledge and experience gained will enable us to lead more useful and worth- while lives. The conditions in the world today make us now. more than ever, conscious of the need for spiritual guidance. With all the destructive forces being developed by modern science, the individual has become seemingly unimportant. Religion has remained the only stable ele- ment upon which we can rely. ln a school of Central's size are found many differ- ing ideas and beliefs with respect to religion. This grad- uating class is representative of different beliefs: Catho- lic, Protestant, Jewish. One might ask, I-low can peo- ple of such different beliefs work together in harmony? On the surface it appears as if these faiths are opposing in principle. Actually, analyzing them, one finds that time, place, or method of worship is relatively unimpor- tant. We all worship one God. This is the basic unity of all our religions. lf we strive to understand not only our religion, but also the beliefs of those we come in contact with in our daily lives. we shall never lose sight of the fact that religion is the foundation of our democratic society. By applying our beliefs to our lives, we shall en- deavor to uphold the principles of our nation. We, the graduating class, will keep faith in our religions. LEFT - Two members of a Central Investigating Committee are seen in the passageway between the Central buildings one bright, dry, spring morning. They are making an inspection of the pigeon situation at Central.
