'MW' ,.m ' - THE INTERLUDE 93 COMMENCEMENT ADDRESSES ISALUTATORYI EDUCATION FOR DEMOCRACY RAMON V. COOK Tomorrow or the day after we take our place in the society of the United States of America. We will continue to enjoy in greater measure the freedoms of the individual and the benefits accruing to living in the most powerful nation in the world. Vs7hat is the reason for this? Most of us would answer: Democracy, But even more significant is our education for democracy. In fact great men of the times have said that with- out compulsory education for all, our democracy would perish and our nation would go the way of the ancient Roman Republics. The time spent in schools is not completely wasted. South Bend Central High School has given us greater 'basis for intelligent thought. In addition it has taught us the history of our democracy, its short- comings and its progressive improvementg We have learned the uses of the various organs in the three levels of our government and of new experiments being tried out. XVithout this knowledge we cannot really govern ourselves, for how can we control our institutions if we do not understand their workings? Great strides have been made in this education since its inception and we, I think, are better prepared to do our part in building a greater democracy. PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS RICHARD SCHUTT Mr. Pointer, Faculty, Members of the School Board and Parents: In the Declaration of Independence Thomas Jeffer- son stated all men are created equal. For that precious right of equality we are grateful. Some of us must work harder than others to achieve high goals. We shall find this wherever we go, but it is the obligation of an educated man to strive for the best. We, the graduating class of nineteen hundred and fifty-three, have been granted the privilege of devoting twelve years of our youth in preparation for this new experience. Going to Central has been in itself a class in Hu- man Relations because we have mingled with and, consequently, learned to get along with peoples of different religions, nationalities, races, and back- grounds. Through contact with them we have learned to respect them, admire them, and most of all, to live with them in an atmosphere free from prejudice and tension. And it is fitting that we have, in a democratic surrounding, had a chance to practice democratic prin- ciples in our student council elections, our election of officers in classes, clubs, and athletic organizations. Because of our training we are able to make a bet- ter world in which to live not only for ourselves but for others. Through our efforts this world may be- come more prosperous and peace loving so that in time people of every nationality, creed, and color may, too, enjoy the standard of living that we desire for ourselves. For this opportunity we. the class of nineteen hun- dred and fifty-three, feel indebted as well as grateful to those who have made this possible. IVALEDICTORYI EDUCATION AND DEMOCRACY MARY' DRING Tonight we are gathered here as high school stu- dents for the last time. We are the irresponsible teen- agers of today and are soon to pass out of these doors as the adults of tomorrow. As adults, we shall be ex- pected to use our store of knowledge wisely and for the good of all mankind. The subject for tonight is Democracy and Educa- tion. Democracy is a Greek word. It is a combination of the word demos , meaning people, and the word kratein , meaning to rule. Webster further defines democracy as a form of government in which the supreme power is lodged in the hands of the people collectively. Now let us see how Webster defines education. He says that education is the acquisition or imparting of knowledge. Our early settlers realized as much as the people do today the importance and value of education: that schools mean educated people and that educated people Q04 BO O O ,Of 30 O4 YOQ YO O 1OiDO4 104 HOCTTOC P01 104 P04 MOC 104 POC DCM YOCS o O . , O O For the Finest In Jewelry Gifts B'-'mr O O , O O O O 1 4 O O CORNER MICHIGAN and WASHINGTON 9 Q01 o of ,oL.,oif o of ,of for vo o o o o o o o o o o o o rocf' 94 THE INTERLUDE ' pos so ot ,Qt 1 , Vcilecltctory if O O O O O O MQ KContt'nuedj 5 mean a government of the people, by the people, and O O for the people. This way, the American way, is our way of life. We consider this basicg so basic that we invite exchange students from other countries to study and try to understand our way of life. For thirteen years now, the taxpayers of this community, follow- ing in the footsteps of their forefathers, have given us an opportunity to broaden our education in the hope that we would become better citizens. A democratic form of government is only as suc- ccsslul as its administration. To administer it properly demands education. lt is necessary for everyone of us to realize that the power of our government is in us -- it is oursl To use this power wisely we must be trained, just as a dressmaker is trained to use her ma- terial wisely. Vife must understand the basic principles of this democracy, We can't afford to experiment by trial and error with something as precious as our free- dom. For many years now, we have fought to keep this cherished freedomg the freedom of democracy. Yet, too many people fail to realize the true value of it. We all know how the Caesars, Napoleons, and Hit- lers tried to conquer the world, Their temporary suc- cess was due to the peoples' ignorance and fear rather than any genius on their part. This ignorance and fear came from the fact that these people weren't given a chance to become educated. These dictators knew that educated people meant the downfall of their dictator- ship. With the threat of Communism so real it is now even more essential for all people, riCh and pOOr alike to be educated. We can't be swayed by an influential tew, nor can we be undermined by a subversive group. On every side of us we have evidence of the fruits of educationg the advances in technology, which bring to us the automatic dishwasher, television, jet pro- pelled planes. and many other gadgets, accepted today as commonplace. Not only do we have mechanical advances due to education, but medical statistics prove that We are one of the healthiest nations in the world. All these benefits result from a well-planned educa- tional program. Freeing m-an from his manual chores, enables him to devote more time to the improvement of his svstem of government. Education promotes a better way of living and better laws to live by. In this wav democracy advances as education: when we have a better and fuller democracy, we in turn have more opportunities for better education. We have been given our opportunity of education here at Central. lt is now our turn, the graduating class of 1953. to uphold the traditions of our great country and to go forward, so that we, too, may keep faith with Central.
