As we leave this building we shall no longer be considered as noisy teenagers. but as the -builders of tomorrow's world. as individuals whose ideas and knowledge will be transformed into reality to help shape the future, We have learned and studied for the purpose of knowing, and the knowledge which we have thus acquired is to be put to use by us to make the world more liveable for us and our fellowmen. Perhaps We the ones who will help transform this world into a peaceful one, so that our lives. our time and our energy, can be devoted to the building of hospitals. schools, and plows instead of guns and armaments. Perhaps we are the ones who will have an oppor- tunity to stop this race of arms, this threat of war and destruction that hangs over us. Let us hope we shall be able to assist toward this end. But today we are assembled here for the purpose of receiving a diploma which in one measure desig- nates the amount of knowledge we have acquired. However, to have possession of a certain amount of knowledge is not the goal of our schooling. For of what use would be eyesight if there were total dark- ness? Of what avail would be our ability to hear, if there were silence about us? Of what use would be our knowledge if we didn't have the opportunity to use it in life? However, here in America, youth has the oppor- tunity of using this knowledge. We live in the land of opportunities, in the land where one can put his ideas and beliefs into reality. In the face of the fu- ture, all of us are equal: all of us have the same freedoms, rights, and privileges. Todays Youth has the largest choice of Iields of employment in the his- tory of man. Today, one can study more branches of knowledge and skills than man ever could. There are those who say that opportunities are now limited. and that the future is dim. But all one needs to do is to look about and see the many un' explored fields which are a challenge to today's youth. We can constantly see that men who have used knowledge wisely and who have put effort into their work, have reached the top of success. Most of us here today have already set certain goals which we want to reach. We must also realize it is up to the individual what he makes of the future. I recall seeing a statue which seemed to symbolize this idea. The upper part was expertly carved: it pictured a man of wide shoulders and a well developed chest. However, the lower part of the statute was a mass of rock having no particular form. In one hand the statue held a chisel, in the other a mallet. With these tools the statue seemed to be shaping its lower body. Thus it.was symbolic of how man must shape his own future, , I-Iciw we are 'going to shape our future and the future of the world is up to us. In our hands are the chisel and mallet. Let us hope we shall make good use of them, In closing, I wish to express my personal thanks to my principals, Mr. Pointer, and Mr. Harris of Franklin, my teachers, the student body, and the community, for the help, guidance and encourage- ment they have given me. PRESIDENTS ADDRESS TOM SINGER Tonight some three hundred students have com- pleted one of the most important steps in their pre- paration to assume the future leadership of the United States of America. In receiving their diplomas from Central I-Iigh School they have graduated from an institution that has provided them with almost every opportunity needed in the preparation for that leadership. But of what nature is this leadership to he? America is a country composed of a hundred thou- sand different types of people with ideas ten times that number. Are its leaders to come from wealthy families or poor families? Are they to be dark or white-Jew or Christian-or without a belief in a Ciocl? Must they come from farms or the cities? Those who are to lead the cosmopolitan people living in this country must respect and understand the beliefs of these people. Those ideals which are just must he retained and those which are not, dis- carded. Therefore, its leaders must have a well- rounded attitude toward, and knowledge of, the philosophies of these various peoples in respect to the well being of this country. If you can accept this idea, then you will realize that those who have been fortunate in graduating from Central High School have received one of the greatest opportunities to know America. Grouped together at Central are people of various colors, of different religions, and those from a vari- ety of economic groups. There are people from foreign countries, people from the rural areas, as well as from different sections of the city. It is the diversity of her people that is Central's most im- portant and most cherished asset in the training of her students. For her people have the opportunity to come together for participation in classroom study, in athletics, in dramatics, in music, and through so- cial activities. in such a way that they may gain un- derstanding and respect for the beliefs of others. Thus, they are better prepared to execute the leader- ship required by such a country as ours. fn, gm Iffl?
