Tonight of all nights you should be with us, for it is a turning point in our lives. It is a beginning and an ending: the beginning of a new life, far more vast in extent than we have ever known before; the end of a joyful, happy school life. This evening we are facing life. We look forth with the eagerness, the hopefulness of youth. For three years we of the class of 1931 have worked together, meetin g success with pleasure and failure with courage. This evening we ex- perience a great happiness, for at least we are able to show you what we have accomplished. This is the culmination of the many days in school — hard days to be sure, but eventful days. So to you, who are in a large measure re- sponsible for our success, in the name of the class of 1931, I extend A hearty welcome! The Interlude Class History SCENE: Summer home. Time: Night of Commencement. Characters: Guy McMichael Albert Graf Robert Frash Richard Gardner Leonard Radeckj. Marshall Hewitt Muriel Stapp Janet Jac son Catherine McColl Bernice Koehler Muriel Levy Margaret Gish (Music and sounds of dancing are heard within the house. Janet and Al are seated on swing.) Janet: Isn ' t it grand and cool out here? Al: You bet! It scarcely seems possible that we ' ve graduated, does it? (The rest enter, couple by couple laughing) . M. Stapp: (Walking to chair.) How do you like being a graduate? I feet sorta lost! Guy: So far so good. Marshall: (To Pete.) Who ' d ever think to see you now that you were the little girl in half socks that walked in here three years ago? Pete: I can ' t say you were any Beau Ideal in our Soph stunt night. Cate: But wasn ' t Turnie cute in the Sopho- more play? Leonard: That was Do You Believe in Luck? , wasn ' t it? Dic : Remember our Soph Spring Sprint? We actually stayed out till 11:00 o ' clock. Bernice: Yes, that was the time Milt Ries was President and led the grand march. Bob: How beautiful thou lookest, my fair lady. Cate: Flatterer! M. Levy: Beautiful lady! What does that remind you of? (Tune of Beautiful Lady heard. Hoppy, Wardell, Donna Belle). Al: (Stumbling). Pete: You ' re not as graceful as those dancers. You look more like Gilbert Horst when he fell down at our Junior Dance. Jan: I ' ll never forget decorating for that Goblins ' Gambol . We had orange and black streamers every place there was room for any. Guy: I can ' t say I care for that minuet or whatever it is they ' re playing. Let ' s get some jazz. Bernie: How funny! Jazz and Minuet . I guess Rae Hargrave put over the jazz part in our Junior play. Dic : Yes, and Bob here was the handsome hero. Bob: I ' d almost forgotten. Marsh (Acting silly) and now Ladies and Gentlemen — M. Levy: Say, you can ' t make any better speech than George Turner could in the play, The Youngest . Sappy: Doesn ' t it seem ages ago that we gave our Junior-S enior Ex? Leonard: Talking about making speeches — I think Tom Lizzi is the one for that. He certainly kept everyone roaring at our Senior Prom. That was a wonderful time. AL Stapp: Didn ' t we have a gorgeous time, tho 7 M. Levy: Bernice, that ' s the prettiest neck- lace you have on. Bernice: Do you like it? Thanks. I bought that at Senior Wyman ' s Day. Which all goes to show that we really can be business like. Marshall: Why, of course, with Guy as our President and such splendid co-operation from the remainder of the class — M. Levy: (Interrupting) Well, now, we-ve heard enough. We ' ll have to admit, tho, that we were pretty successful. Pete: Speaking of the cute bracelet, look at the darling one Cate has. Did you get it for a graduation present Santa Claus certainly was good to you. Cate: You don ' t know your history ' . This isn ' t the time of year for Santa. Anyway, there ' s something more in Chnstmass that that. Guy: I guess we all found that out in Unto the Least of These. Jan: That play gave me the queerest feeling. It just left me rather weak. Al: I ' ll bet you didn ' t feel half as weak as I did after our Senior April Shower Dance. Dici : Already that seems like a long time ago and yet it was only a little over a month ago. Guy: Yes, it was only thirty-eight days ago. Leonard: Only 3S ! That was our Senior play. That was the last big thing our class put over. Marshall: We not only displayed talent in that but I think we showed some in our last assembly — our Senior Musicale. COMMITTEE Janet Jac son Ch. Renata Weisbrodt Pauline Juillerat Rosina Morra Edward Esch George Turner Margaret McCowan Milton Ries The Interlude Valedictory By Katherine Crum packer On this night as we are reaching the highest goal in our school life, it is only natural that we should look back over the past few years which can now be seen so plainly while the future is yet hidden. They have been pleasant years. We have worked hard, played hard — and we have gained much. We have spent a great deal of energy seeking for the things we want; often we have failed, but each small trouble or failure has been the spur to lead us on to greater success. Tonight our feeling of happiness in our success thus far overshadows the memories of the various struggles that we met along the way. Now, as we look at all the familiar faces of our friends here, it is hard to think of the parting we must make. The past is secure and happy. We are inexperienced, but there must be oppor- tunities ahead. We have lived in a period of great changes and new opportunities. Our earliest remembrances are of the Great War, and it is in the unsettled world since then that we have grown up. Nothing has long remained still. We believe that it is the duty of those who have grown up with these developments to go out and lend at least their youthful enthusiasm toward aiding these con ' ditions in the world. So we will go forth to work and play, as we have worked and played here; with the strong hope and firm resolve that you, our parents, our teachers, and our friends, shall someday be proud of the class of nineteen hundred and thirty-one. It is with this resolve that we now bid farewell to you, our classmates and our friends. Patterns By Stu With some solemnity The figures stand here, Wrapt in the eternal movement of time, Cloaked in the intricate forms of patterns, As an ocean lies on its bed, in space, Outward to the sand, lapping waters; Inward, moving to an exotic melody, Weaving within and to the center, Back and forth. As such these figures weave in the mind Patterns, Threads from the past to the future, Between the impotence of the old And the untried energies of the young. All in one in this pattern: All patterns in one. Thus to the face of destiny. ART TOMBER Not noble symbols merely, these patterns, But rather each strand. Some part of our life; No longer the weaver, But the pattern alive. Yours the intricate, ours the simple: Yours the fadeless, ours to be dyed: Yet all formed in that same movement of humanity To the melody of entwining notes. Back to the stinging arrows of sadness, To the gleaming stabs of gladness, And then to the forces in us Mounting to tomorrow — Gone back to the other end, in another dawn. In these patterns with cheir rhythms, Then do we see our life. [45] The Interlude 47 EDITORIAL £nfhlisicisrri The graduating class looks forward with faith in an ideal, with hope of its attainment and with enthusiasm for the work by which it may be attained. Just how much depends upon this attitude toward the means of attainment is seldom appreciated. Folks say that it is natural for youth to be enthusiastic, and it is well to remember that truly natu- ral attitudes are generally wise. Until life presents responsibility as an incentive to endeavor, enthusiasm serves as a motiva- ting force. Perhaps this earlier force is the more powerful since responsibility is less inspirational and the experience by which it is accompanied is often characterized by ' the results of disillusion- ment. For disillusionment must come. Not all of us can set the world afire with our successes. Yet so long the glamor and the joy of endeavor remain, nothing seems impossible, and much is made possible by the attitude. Then the very enthusiasm which attends the youth commencing life goes far in obtaining for him the attention which later may only be commanded by knowledge and expenence. For the world is interested in the man who is interested in the world. So let us show the world what enthusiasm we have. Unless youth aimed to accomplish all, age could accomplish little. Helen June Huston Helen June Huston, honor student, Girl Reserve and Camp Fire leader, Sunday School teacher, and active participant in school affairs has been taken from our midst. Coming suddenly as her death does, our school has been shocked by the tragedy. Helen would have graduated this June, and we all have predicted for her a very happy life. We shall miss her greatly, yet we may think of her good sportsmanship and fine example. SuCCeSS What is success? The graduating class has heard much of success. Success has been upheld as the attainment of that far wish each individual strives, yet is this success? In the first place, each individual strives for something different. It is well to hitch one ' s wagon to a star as the proverb states. Yet not all of us will reach that star, much as we may desire to. Then too, some do not aim to pluck the cherries highest on the tree. That too, is well, for often those which grow lower on the tree are just as sweet — frequently sweeter. Yet may we say that those who aim high and succeed half-way are failures, while those who aim half-way are successes? One has attained that for which he strove; the other has not. Yet both have attained the same reward. May we not say that both have achieved success when they have become worthy members of society and have contributed to the welfare of others 1 Let us in this light consider success, and success will be ours. Everyone may become a useful member of society; some will contribute more than others, for not all of us may become exactly what we wish to be. Nevertheless, if such be the case, each of us will be a success. 48 The Interlude Z - X = c I ? i - -- : r • j; x - = w The Interlude 49 CAST OF UNTO THE LEAST OF THESE GIVEN AS SENIOR B ASSEMBLY Standing, left to right: James Marohn. Guy: Imagine it! Eddy Meinringer and Chuck Eger were brought in the other day by policeman Francis Cass. They are being tried by Judge Herman Hersh for parking cars on side roads at too late an hour, and for giving the milk wagons too much competition. Muriel: Yes! What do you think of this? The other day when I was up in the business district I heard shouts of ' extra! , extra! . I immediately bought a paper and there on the front page was Sophia Kat:, an astounding success as the human fly , climbing Wrigley Building with a wad of gum in her mouth. Be careful, Sophia, don ' t get stuck! Bob Frash: Listen to this: Al Graf is a street car conductor. He ' s captain of the street car baseball team. The members of the first team are William Ackerman, Karl Berkheiser, Ben Rosplochowski, Gerald Hagopian, Steve Ciesielski, Chester Zabik, Thurman Dice, and Jerome Vogel. Bermce Who would ever believe that Dan Crumpacker would be starring as a hero in some of the well-known productions? Janet: Do you know who is taking Dorothy Dix ' s place now? Esther Bays. I ' m sure she writes from experience. Ames Tempelton and Rose Burolitz have formed a blue team and sing in a New York cabaret. Margaret: Among the happy marriages of our classmates, but not at all surprising, is that of Trenton Murphy and Renato Weiss- brodt. Out at St. Marys are two very trust- worthy janitors, John Fomenko and Paul Carnco. I hear that Katherine Crumpacker and Frances Hopkins, are famous models in a New York style show. Marshall: Keep still a minute, and give some- body else a chance. Donald Heyde found a flaw in the Einstein theory. Some elephants are well off, now that John Cummins is an elephant tender. Ruth Stebbins is kneading dough in Dorothy Spry ' s cream-purf parlor. Across the street is John Rupel ' s barber shop. When anyone gets through with these two establishments they are ready for Harry Poulin. South Bend ' s most outstanding undertaker. Leonard: Here is Earl Perkins and Fred Wharton pushing banana wagons, and Rose Jacobs is cooking in a mining camp in Alaska. Can you imagine it! Bob Frash is at the head of the soup line in the Latin Quarter in Paris Marshall: Did you know that Lawrence Deal is just a gigolo, and James Banacka has become almost as popular in the musical line as Rudy Valee. Richard: Hear this! Everett Jones, a famous deep sea diver! Goodness! Naomi Swem and Wilbur Hoover are making things hot for Al Capone on the South Side. Guy: The paragon of Grace — Ferdinand Nabicht! Ferdinand is the director of a group of futuristic dancers consisting of Mary Hezler, Mary Kellogg, Mary Wolfe, Mary Vnent, Mary Koechel, Mary Helen Lewis, Mane Eubank, Mane Salt-gober, Martha Elick, Martha Bourgon, Marigrace Turner, and Martha Shaffer. And listen; Victoria De- Fries is an assistant in Bill Bakers Beauty Shop, and across the street Dan Youngerman is a peanut vender. Near by Eleanor Peden runs a restaurant with Harry Solomon as the mana- ger. Janet: I saw in the paper the other night that Clem Korpal is singing in his first opera. He is following in the footsteps of Caruso John Lipke and Ralph Cripe have become scientists and Ruth Flowers aids them by mak- ing discoveries of new bacteria. Muriel: Ethel Levenson has the record for growing wonderful black tresses in six months time and Gerald Land has become the typing champion. Success to you, Antone! Antone Braro is a big executive in a Pin Factory of which Oliver Chayie is president. Al: I saw Leo McKee running an elevator in the Michigan State Pen, when I visited it this summer, and last summer while I was in the South Seas, I saw Edward Purzycki and John Graybill dive for pennies. Good old Heinie! My old school friend Henry Fefer- man has discovered all the beauty secrets and now holds the world-renown position as Edna Wallace Hopper. He still looks 16. Catherine: This summer when I went to Hollywood, I met Bermce Koehler. She told me that she and Gladys Mitchell were vieing 62 The Interlude £ itfi ' i il 5 m::mm s - , Hi- Uo Insepard ble - 5 Crn+rali+e-s to dethrone Greta Garbo. Good luck, girls! Genevieve Meyer is teaching kindergarten and her best girl friend, Dorothea Winther has be- come the first woman president of the United States. Janet: Wilmot Brown, so I hear, is a ditch digger, and Ray McClary carries water for him. Cednc Mast is a bell-hop in a Lakeville hotel. Margaret: When I was at the Library the other day, I found a book named How to Hold Your Husband by Elizabeth Rough, and while visiting Osceola, I went through the Osceola Tech. Of all surprises, this was the greatest! Charles Logsdon is principal. Bernice: Although Peter Nemeth, Jr. said he was going to be an undertaker, we see him traveling all over the world collecting Shredded Wheat Boxes. Joe Ettl is earning a fortune showing people how to cure cauliflower-ears in ten lessons, and Ruth Christman has taken Miss Weber ' s place in the alma mater. Leonard: While at a talkie the other even- ing, I was surprised to see the pictures of Beatrice Fischer and Ruth Fishman. They have just completed a roller skating tour of the United States, and in the very next picture Clayton Johnson with Alden Kline, is to wrestle for the flea weight wrestling champion- ship of Lakeville. To climax this surprising news reel, I next saw pictures of Mildred Nash and Artemis Pappas, old classmates, receiving cup for tieing in a beauty contest with Robert Feldman, officiating as judge. The very last picture was that of fair Stephanie Pierce, the first woman jockey. Marshall: I ' ve been looking up some of these old school friends, and among the first I read about were Richard Irvin and LaVern Ma- honey — gentlemen of leisure. In the dramatic world, I found Rose Srabo and Oscar Janovsky booked in China for ' Abie ' s Irish Rose. At the Salvation Army Meeting held on Main and Washington, I saw Eleanor Alspaugh who shakes a mean tambourine, and Robert No- wicke, still beating the bass drum. Catherine: In last night ' s paper I read that Benjamin Slade is a music teacher in Kokomo. His sweet ways have made a great hit with his pupils. --Also, I noticed that Thomas Carlile is a famous Photographer of bathing beauties at Atlantic City. Emery Urbanski, who has achieved world wide fame as a motor- ist, drove him down. Atlantic City makes me remember that Fred Shanley is an outstanding designer of brick walls and board-walks. The Interlude 63 Margaret: I hear that Erma Rinehart, Grace Roush, and Genevieve Scameheorne are selling stickless gum on the street in Atlantic City. Near the city, we find Charles Hagenbuch, a son of the soil. Catherine: Speaking of newspapers, I read about Charles Borowski catching fish in the city reservoir to keep them from clogging the city mains. In a small item, I also saw that Charles Kile has become a chemist in Edwin Shults ' s Pickle Factory. While driving to the Pickle Factory, Vail Deale smashed his 11th electric car. Marshall: Punkin Center has produced some famous athletes. Paul Palmer has given the United States fame by breaking eleven records in the Olympic Meets. Punkin Center can expect more of these records because Florence Lundstrom and Catherine Marger are physical director in Punkin High School. Frank Altman is in charge of the dog-pound there. Bernice: Funeral services of Roland Seguin were held last Friday; poor Roland died of sleeping sickness. The minister officiating was Rev. Marquis Menzie. This might not have happened if he had had such nurses as Lurile FLcks, Gertrude Hoffman, and Ruth Heston, who are head nurses at Healthwin. Muriel: Evelyn McCauslin maintains a bureau of information for Notre Dame students, while Irma Sule has become a per- manent taxi driver between the city and Notre Dame. Robert: Jack Rankin is a fur trader in the north woods. Virginia White is in Alaska broadcasting over a station H-A-M- on how to make sandwiches. I can just see Lennart Prytz perched on a snow-capped peak playing a zither — he is the only living zither player in the world! The Eskimos are doing well in learning German, for Marjone Darr is their teacher. The weasels were having a hard time until Dorothy Spry invented a new incubator for baby weasels. AI: Jimmy Marohn ' s musical ability has transformed him from the sweet curly-haired boy we knew into a cynical snake-charmer in India. In India we find Kurt Simon who has as- tounded the world by presenting a most useful talk on The Utilization of the Pig ' s Squeal in the Packing Industry. Janet: Syncopation! wa-wa-bo-da! ' Tis the well-known voice of Allen Pullin. Coon- Sanders are slowly being replaced! and if you want your fortune told, go to the red-haired fortune teller, Marjorie Stech. Catherine: Well, so Nellie Sofan has succeeded Miss Oakley as librarian! Art Crum is pretty far from here. He is busily engaged in the South Sea Islands feeding the song- birds. A lot of our class seems to have stayed in South Bend. Here ' s Victor Barzykowski, a caretaker at Leeper Park, and Richard Davis is a famous ice-man. Emery Hirschler is seen hoeing a row of turnips in Bendix ' s front yard. Margaret; I see Ethelyne Hall has received a patent on a new reducing machine. Who would ever have guessed that Barbara Hartman and Alice Hathaway would own an art shop. Margaret Hunsberger plays the violin in the Latin Quarter in Paris. She lives with Emma Kish who is an outstanding artist there. Wanda Olczak lives near them and is the famous Latin translator. Jeanette Devine has become a nun m Paris. The other night I went to the popular show, The World , directed by Thelma Hafstrom, and featuring, Betty Fretz, Sara Goldberg, and Clara Gooley as the three Graces. Muriel: While I was in New York the other day, I met William McCombs. He took me to see his warship, and who should be work- ing as his butler but Earl Hounshell. Burr Knng is William ' s chimney-sweep. The day before they found Walter McCready hidden away as a stowaway. Not to be outdone Joseph Voros, has become a successful toothpaste manufacturer. These two industries are widely advertised over William Paul ' s broadcasting station B-L-A-H Janet: Well, you don ' t know about all the successful business folks of our class. Listen to this. Leslie Molnar makes Rockingless Rocking-chairs, and Rudolph Nyari has ad- vanced to a book seller . But I think Thaddeus Jozwack is to be highly compli- mented in the profession he has chosen — that of fly-catcher in Edmund Hosinski ' s bakery. Margaret: I ' m not surprised about Anthony Paidle though. You know he ' s the compiler of the 1945 World Almanac. He told me that Ted Neizgodski has been ordained arch- bishop. By the way do you remember those brawny boys, Emil Pertics and Casimer Kanczuzewski? They are the chief piano movers at the Palace. Richard: What a job! Casmier Wieczorak and Walter Wojtysiak tend the cubs at Lincoln Park. That may be hard, but here ' s something harder — Andrew Wroblewski is a janitor at South Bend High School. Say you ought to hear two speakers I heard last night. Florence Bechert spoke on Woman ' s Rights , and after her John Walsh spoke. He ' s the greatest anti-prohibitionist. Bernice: Every morning promptly at seven I ' m awakened by that whistle at Studebakers. Last week I found out that it is Kenneth Smous who operated it. There is one person ' s occupation I admire immensely, because it is so beautiful, that is Ethel Boberg ' s daily job of blowing soap bubbles. Leonard: Say you girls, here ' s a beauty tip: Theresa Bourgon has invented a new hair dye — good for at least three washings. How I envy Dorothy Coleman; She has a job at the Five and Ten candy counter. On my way into South Bend today I passed Muessel Jr. High and saw Florence DeBates, she is the playground instructor there. President ' s Farewell Address B Guy McMichael We are approaching the culmination of three years of interesting and profitable training in our lives. When we part tonight, let us carry with us into whatever walk of life we may enter, the happy memories of those three short years. Let us continue in the fine, wholesome, spirit which we have created within the halls of our Alma Mater. As a class, we have reached high pinnacles of success chiefly through unselfishness co- operation, ambitious activities, and the foster- ing of high ideals, May we continue to build on this firm foundation through the coming years. It has been an honor and a privilege to be president of such a loyal and successful class and I trust it may be said that my dunes have been performed satisfactorily. In behalf of the class, I wish to express gratitude to those who have made graduation possible. Our principal and teachers have im- ported to us, not only book knowledge, but also the essentials of true manhood and woman- hood. Our parents have planned and sacrificed that we might attain the goal that we have reached tonight. We can express our true appreciation to them, not merely by words, but by the character and success of the lives we lead in the years to come. To me it seems that there never has or never will be another class such as ours and I know that in graduating from such a respected and honored institution as we do, we shall always regard its name as a sacred thing. In the years to come, we cannot hope for the wide and easy path that we have trod during our high school days for we are on the bottom rung of a tall ladder and the steps are far be- tween. Let us not look down but ever upward. I regret the sorrow of our parting and I can- not force myself to say goodbye, for the close- ness of our friendship still persists. Though our many happy hours are drawing to a close, I cannot say farewell but rather — until we meet asain.
