The 1954-1955 school year marked the last year in Miss Clara Gibbs' thirty-five year teaching career. Her resignation and retirement after thirty years of teaching at Chautauqua will leave a noticeable gap in the ranks of our faculty. Miss Gibbs comes originally from Fredonia. She graduated from the State Teachers College there and from Columbia University. She has also taken six summers' instruction at the University of Buffalo, Her first teaching position was at Lewiston, New York. From there she came to Chautauqua. Miss Gibbs taught both art and music during her first eleven years here. She formed our first orchestra and girls' chorus as well as a boys' double quartet and a jazz band. Miss Gibbs' art students have provided the appropriate scenery for all our operettas and music programs. These students have painted the moving Christmas scenes on the windows of the school during many Christmas Seasons. The innumerable drawings in the Chronicle and in our yearbooks were done by students of Miss Gibbs. U Miss Gibbs has been very active outside our school. She is a member of the WCTU, the DAR, the Historical Society, the New York State Art Teachers' Association, and the Eastern Arts Association. She was the choir director of the community church for twenty-five years and is now an active member of the church board. She was honored in being made a life member at the Chautauqua P. T. A. i We are sorry to lose Miss Gibbs, who has done so much for Chautauqua's art and music departments.
