Baseball 1955-56 The baseball season was completed and Central High Panthers added another trophy to their trophy case , a co- championship trophy shared with Barry. The Panthers had a record of 8 wins against 2 losses. One of the losses was to the Co-champions, Barry, and the other to Bowen. The conference record was 7 wins and 1 loss . In the conference Central won from Liberty 2 games, 6-0 and 19-4, West Pike in 2 games, 24-3 and 12-97 Payson in 2 games, 6-2 and 12-5. The games with Bowen and Plymouth were not conference games . Barry proved to be a horse of different color, winning 1 game 16-5, and losing the next 9-6, presenting a tie for first place in the Wenois Conference. The squad con- sisted of Kay Oberling, Kent Bluhm, Roger Riggins, Ronnie Summers, Merle Leerhoff, Robert Aden, Larry Rittenhouse, Wayne Gibson, Bub Hibbert, Roger Reuschel, Garl Hunsaker, Bill Leenerts, Wendell Gunn, Leon Conover, Anthol Riggins, Denny Hendricks, Charles Lawless, Kenneth Miller, Iohn Kestner, Iim Brinkman, Ierry Brinkman, Bill Oberling, Larry Roland, and Bobby Baird. Terry Koontz and Leon Conover looked good, although Merle Leerhoff had the best pitching record with 4 wins and only one loss . Kent Leuders won the batting champ- ionship trophy. We will miss the Seniors next year but we will have some outstanding players. BATTING AVERAGE OF LETTERMEN Name 1 . Bluhm 2 . Conover 3. Robert Aden 4. Gunn 5 . Hibbert 6. T . Koontz 7 . Lueders 8 . This is the first time since the consol- idation of the High School that Central has ended the season with more wins than losses. At the first of the season Central started off very well but ran into a snag when Mendon defeated them. However, the team worked very hard over the Christmas holidays and pulled a game out of the fire from Augusta winning by the final score of 45 to 44. The followers of the Panthers saw better things coming when the quintets won the Wenois Confer- ence Tournament by defeating the determined Mendon team by 5 points after Central had a 20 point advantage in the first half. Our team then won the first game in the Winchester Tournament, but faltered in the second and third games. However, they came home with fourth place and sportsmanship trophies . After winning 5 games Central lost a heartbreaker to Bowen in 2 O.T. From then on Central gave the home crowd something to yell about by winning the rest of the games on their home court. The second win over Augusta was very gratifying be- cause of the rivalry between the two schools. Central won the last home game of the year by a score of 95 to 65 over Carthage. The team won the first game of the Regional but lost their second game to a more experienced Quincy team. The team had its ups and downs but for once they were mostly ups . Most of the second team will be playing next year so we hope and expect a good team for 1956 and '57.
