Under the guidance of our class sponsor, Mr. Shanks, and the junior class, we were initiated. We studied very hard and joined extra-curricular organizations such as F.H.A., Plus Ultra, Band, Chorus, and athletics. As Silly Sophomores , we returned to school the following year. During the course of the year we lost the following members: Elizabeth Baxa, Ross Davis, and Ronnie Secrest, but we gained Robert Goodwin and Robert Strong. Mrs. Blentlinger was our sponsor and we enjoyed our sophomore yea without too much excitement. We returned to school as Jolly Juniors without Melvin Austin and Laurence Kauffman. This year began a series of activities. Under the direction of our sponsor, Mrs. Wick-liffe, we had many play practices and finally produced our great Junior Class play, No More Homework. Shortly after the play we received our class rings. On May 7, 1954, we sponsored the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom at Rushville, Illinois. The juniors with the highest grades ushered at Baccalaurate and Commencement. Thus ended our Junior year. In the fall of 1954, we came back to school for the last year as Sophisticated Seniors. We lost the following members: Darryl Hunsaker and Roger Vollbracht, but we gained Rose Mary Flesner and David Johnson. Under the guidance of our newspaper and annual advisor, Mrs. Brinkman, we published monthly our newspaper, The Central Gazette. On October 21, we had our senior pictures taken. We greatly enjoyed the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom and our senior trip. We are sincerely happy and a little sad to graduate from good old Central High School. Clayton Division We, the Seniors, like to look back to the year of 1951 when we. entered Clayton High School as Green Freshmen. We elected Nona Knight, President; Carole Parn, Vice-President; and Jon Dunham, Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. Rabbitt and Mr. Van Ormer were our sponsors. During the year we had a hayride and wiener roast at David Higley's. 19 In 1952, as we entered school as Sophomores, we hadlost three members: Wanda Friday, Glen Smay, and Harry Kindhart. Nona Knight served as President; Faye Lierly as Vice-President; Donald Stevens as Secretary-Treasurer; and Mr. Rabbitt and Mrs. Evans as sponsors. When the doors of Clayton High once more swung open in 1953, we entered as Juniors, Sixteen members were present. Donald Stevens was elected President; Melvin Vonholt, Vice-President; and DavidHigley, Secretary-Treasurer. Mrs. Hufnagel and Mrs. Stevens were our sponsors. Class officers were Nona Knight, President; Carole Parn, Vice-President; Martha Shank, Treasurer; and Faye Lierly, Secretary. Mr. Clapper and Mr. Van Ormer served as class sponsors. I guess he had to resign from the Lonely Hearts Club. Donald Stevens has been a great promoter of better schools and conducts a soap box column in the local paper. Bob Strong well, look here! Here he comes with eight little Strong's, trailing. He must have changed his mind on love. Virginia Thomas our old maid, is running an up-and-coming old maid's home. Lu Ann Vancil we are proud to tell you that she won the Pan-American road race with her Buick Rocket. Melvin Vonholt Concord's wealthiest citizen thought he should be admitted free of charge because two of his sons are on the ball team. Keith Williams Quiet, everyone! Keith Williams, the principal of Central High, is going to give a speech. Last but not least, is Roaring Ruby , none other than our own Ruby Windfield. My what notoriety that lady wrestler has received in recent years. Alas! the final gong. The game is over. Central won 55 to 0. It is with fond memories, regret, and sadness that the members of the class of 1955 say farewell and each silently returns to his pursuit of life. We look around and think Back to the golden days of learning; Of how scared we were That first ominous hour in the studyhall. From our trembling and immature beginnings We fought hard The struggling battle of adolescence To the time of sophistication. Now we are through and have begun To realize we are growing up; Being thankful these doors have Prepared us for this hard world. --Charlotte Booth Flower: American Beauty Rose Colors: Silver and Blue Motto: We have committed the Golden Rule to memory; let us commit it to life. 25 Golden Juniors ROW 1: Behrens, Bartell (Sec. Our pitching and hitting was far below that of the teams we played. However, critical errors, both physical and mental, played a big part in our allowing the opposition to score when we should have come out of the inning without scores. This phase of the games of course can not be shown by a statistical table. The boys showed some improvement. During the season we had several freshmen who showed quite a lot of improvement and we feel another year will give a good account of themselves. 34 ROW 1: Oberling, Riggins, Gronewald, R. Likes, D. Danny arrived in a taxi—with a $?00 bill on the meter. In addition, the taxi driver, o Louie — - was nearly hanged for his critical remarks about the Great Golden West. The caretaker, Jake - — viewed Danny, appalled. Danny quickly proved he had ideas of his own.
