I figured that in everything we did. If we marched with precision, if our first two songs were done correct- ly, we’d be okay.” Ambrosier added that he had been a bit wor- ried about the band's third number, “Sweet Georgia Brown , because it had been performed only once before the contest. If we did everything else correctly, Ambro- sier said, then I knew the action in the third number would get a good reaction from the crowd. As it turned out, all went well, and the CHS band did win. In the street marching competition, all bands were separated into two categories: those with fewer than 65 members, and those with 65 and more. Clear Creek High School from Idaho Springs was the only band in the first class, and so was naturally awarded the first place trophy. All other bands fell into the bigger class, which meant that Central was competing with bands from the Eastern Slope. All things considered, they did quite well, placing first with a total of 137 points. Montrose was second with 135. Ambrosier admitted that he hadn't expected to come away with the parade trophy. I expect- ed Green Mountain to take first, with us second.” In the field show competition, all bands were classified according to the total school enrollment. Central, Fruita Monument, and Montrose were all in class 3A, while Grand Junction High was ranked in 4A along with Green Mountain and Northglenn. Winners of the field show competition were Clear Creek, 1A; class 2A did not have a winner, as no band received a 1 rating; Central High, 3A; and Green Mountain, 4A. Drum Majorette Darla Ochoa came away with the trophy for Outstanding Drum Major; and Tracy Johnson, Nikki Dodge, and Donna Ryken won their twirling ensemble trophy. When asked if he had thought the band really had the ability to win, Ambrosier nodded emphati- cally. It was just a matter of putting it all together on the field. Hey, I saw Montrose's show, and I knew we had it already.” Now the band, at press time, is looking ahead toward another con- test at Delu on October 22. Beyond Delu, Central’s band has another contest to plan for. By virtue of the win here, the band will compete at state level in Thornton on November 1. I know what state competition is like, said Ambrosier of what might be termed apprehension on the part of the band. He said he expects Englewood, Littleton, Greeley West ind Greeley Centtal to be tough at Thornton, and also noted tha Green Mounuin and Northgl will be in Central’s class. Amb' Are rhey lost???? Anderson Address BY JOHN McCOY Warrior Times Writer The Grand Junction High School auditorium was the site of a meeting of western slope members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Christian Athletes from all over the region came to be lectured and entertained by some of the organization's leading officials The first speaker of the evening was the co-sponsor of FCA from Grand Junction High, Max Krahcek. Kralicek spoke of the various activities that GJHS Fellowship members took part in He then expressed his thanks to Dan Stavely. the national chairman fo FCA. and to guest speaker Bobby Anderson, for attending the meeting Kralicek then introduced the entertain- ment for the evening. Brad and Cathy Coleman, who played piano and sang songs pertaining to Christ in our lives The next speaker was Stavely, who m previous years has been a member of the football coaching staffs at Colorado University, Stanford, and the University of Washington, and who is currently the national chairman of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Stavely suggested that the kids get more involved in their church organization and become nearer to God. He then gave some dates for FCA retreats in the Black Forest area during March, saying that they would be able to meet with several fine Christian athletes from throughout the United States He then tried recruiting kids for the summer conference, at the Estes Park retreat which is to be held the second week in June for boys, and the following week for girls. Stavely then ended his talk with a message to the young athletes, saying that it is important to mature spiritually. Stavely said, Don't overload yourself in athletics, studiesand social life, but strive to make yourself a well-rounded person. The program concluded with a speech by former professional football player Bobby Anderson, who played with the Denver Broncos. New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys, and Washing- ton Redskins. Anderson gave the audience a brief description of his career, saying he played three years for Denver, seven minutes for Dallas, one year for New England, and seven seconds for Washington Anderson talked about playing for Dallas and coach Tom Landry. Landry was a super coach and a great guy. He said that there were six things that Landry looked for in his players, physical and mental qualities being the two general areas. The player should be well-rounded, he said, and have good strength, speed and explosion; he added that the player should also be alert, competitive, and have good character. He quoted Landry as saying. I tried to change a lot of guys’ characters, but only Jesus can do that. Anderson concluded by saying we should always try to be happy. He said that every letter in the phrase be happy means something to him The ' B stands for be aware of your emotions, good and bad. Try to exhibit the good emotions and exert control over the bad.
