It was longer still because of some key injuries as well as the fact that there was a lack of manpower (numbers) namely the number of boys out for football. But a sound basis has been laid for the future of football at Central High School. Capt. Central should be real strong in '74 with six returning letterman, according to Coach Tom Hughes. It was the addition of new players, largely beginners, that bolstered the squad this year. Many played on the varsity squad. The team lost some very close matches. The season's record was 2-6. Top players were Scott Woodard, Kevin Decker, and Barrett Westbrook. Top doubles were Tod Obergfell—Tim Osborne; Greg Williams—Gene Benson; and Mark Williams—John Davis. Coach Craig Fay CROSS COUNTRY-73 According to Coach Craig Fay, 1973 was the best season in three because of the over-all depth of the team. There were seven men who ran under 11:00.0. Since Pat Kelleher was the only senior on the team, Coach Fay looks for another good year in '74. The Warriors won second in the district, finished second in two other meets and tied for first in another. State qualifiers finished 17th in the state meet. Pat Kelleher and Rich Roth had the year's best times-10:24 and 10:32, respectively. Mike Augustine off the ground and running. GOLF-73 In 1973 (fall) Central had one of its finest years in golf, breaking previous team rec- ords three times near the end of the season; also the team had the highest ever in the district tournament. The fun started with 'Hang 'em Day, but the best of all days seemed to be the '50s Day during which students and teachers dressed as they might have during the Roar- ing' 50s. The week ended with the Girl Ask Boy dance on Saturday night, and this time the girls paid and wined and dined their favorite beaus. April Showers Sponsored annually by the Cen- tral Music Parents, April Showers is something like a spring talent show with a touch of vaudeville. It attracts talent from around the Grand Valley, from grade school to high school. From the number of people involved in getting the show ready, it is obvious that the production becomes something of a school-community project. The April Showers royalty is chosen, after competition in sell- ing tickets to the show, from among the band or chorus. This year the band won the competi- tion, and the king and Queen were........................ (Center) Mike Cosby and Patricia Unfred, flanked by attendants David Godby and Kathy Randolph. Helping also (L-R)were Tana Petek, Central head girl; Steven Briggs, crown bearer; Phil Radice, head boy at Central: and Tonia Von Burg, crown bearer. Only three acts from Central made it to the finals, and the winners of the 13-18 age group were (Above) Breta Richardson and Dane Eddy. 49 Student Elections Students voted in record numbers after candidates and their helpers had cam- paigned for a week with posters and per- sonal contacts, and finally with speeches to the student body in an assembly. FOt • I • e)un sHine Q A My Shoulders Although there were struggles to endure and many frustra- tions to work around, the Junior Class was finally able to put things together and present the biggest social event of the spring—the Junior-Senior prom—on May 4 in the Stage- coach Room of the Bar-X Motel. Perhaps, all the worry and fretting were worth the effort as guys and gals in their best bib and tucker1 (that's formal gowns and either dinner jackets or tuxedos to you outlanders) and enjoyed them- selves. The Vibes from Denver provided music for dancing; pages from the Sophomore Class entertained following the crowning of the Queen and King; Prom royalty were attendants Barbara Massey and Jim Abshire and Queen Debbie Ensign and King Tony Hughes. Raft Races Even though it isn't part of the regular extra- curricular activities at Central High School, the annual raft races down Plateau Creek always at- tract some of the hardier outdoors people in the school, male and female. Despite the fact that the water level in the creek this year was down, 20 rafts, some with girls and boys four crewmen to each raft) negotiated the boulder-studded creek bed... And another school year has been added to the records of Central with the grad- uation of the Class of 1974. But not to be forgotten at this important time of the year for seniors is... Baccalaureate ...that stresses the spiritual side of graduation and the future that lies just around the corner for graduates. 56 Senior Awards Abshire, James—Tuition scholarship, Colorado School of Mines Cal Iison, Robert—Mesa College Achievement Award Crabtree, Daniel—Mesa College Achievement Award Dodd, William—Mesa College Achievement Award Garrison, Brian—Mesa College Achievement Award Jones, Kerridee—Four-year tuition scholarship. Future Homemakers of America is a national organization of girls involved in home eco- nomics, including high school and junior high school girls. Its objectives are to develop leadership training, home- making skills, and to involve girls in social needs with the community. Central High's chapter has chosen to make educational aids for the Riverside School and to visit with students in the State Home and older people in rest homes. 94 Officers: (L-R) Debbie Wilson, secretary; Janice Brouse, treasurer; Karen Nimmo, vice-president; Mrs. Rottmann, sponsor; Linda Zeigler, presi- dent; Bonnie Morton, treas- urer This club is for those who are interested in exploring the various fields of education and want to learn more about them. The staff is some- times even caught off guard in scenes they would just as soon forget. If they are embarrassing, don't fret; these are just the breaks of the game. Teachers are human and enjoy themselves just as other poeple do. It's not all noses In the books; a smile is often worthe its weight in gold or a sack of pinto beans. Hiding behind a desk or grading papers is not really fun, but it has to be done. One thing they can not do is smoke in the classroom, but not all is hopeless. School doesn't last forever. 135 m i- t Ofterntimes, two heads are better than one in keeping with school business. Peek-a-boo, we see you. There is no use trying to hide those calories. As kids come and go, teachers are often surprised to find that some of them even come away having learned something. And this is what makes it all worthwile. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence; Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by And that has made all the difference. by Robert Frost i • ' ’— r r - .« ’ :, - , -- ■ ■ '■ A' V' - • - -‘ W • ■ ' « ' K-it.
