Wendi Martin, editor; Leonard C. Lehl, advisor; Jack Ekhart, American Yearbook Company represen- tative ...an annual publication of Cen- tral High School,Grand Junction, Colorado, 81501............... Dedication of the 1971 edition of the Central High School annual, the Tawasi, is extended to two men of the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, the daily newspaper of the area, for their help and assistance in providing our staff with assorted pictures and photographic assist- ance for the staff of the yearbook They have given us pictures of athletic events, various royalty, other school events such as school plays and musical events. On occasion we would have been in big trouble without their as- sistance. Thus, we humbly ex- press our thanks and respect to Bob Grant and Charles Teed. And another year (1970-71) began and ended. . . We had our successes, failures but we did our thine. .. Two important cogs, doing, and showing those important signs of accomplishment. Tomorrow.. .Win! Students of Central High got some idea of the answer in Dear Ruth , Norman Krasna's modern-day comedy, pre- sented as the first school play of the year in November. Directed by Mrs. Carol Stewart, the play was the first time a production had been double cast at Central. Connie Odelberg played the lead as Ruth Wilkins, Dear Ruth. What does a family do when the youngest daughter starts corresponding with servicemen during World War II to help keep up their morale? Challenge Talent Night , a yearly event at Central High School involving the senior, junior, and sopho- more classes in dramatic competition, seemed to be more successful in the 1970-71 school year. Taking third place, the juniors presented Elmer. It was directed by Kay Dible and Bryan Aumiller. The sophomores captured second place in the com- petition by presenting The Capricious Pearls. Directing duties were handled by Ellen Tarr and Ron Sinclair. The sophomores also walked away with the 30 per cent profit from ticket sales because they had the largest attendance at the one-night stand in the Central High auditorium. 1971 Challenge Talent Night The seniors. Class of 1971, took top honors with their interpretation of The Bride Wore Red Pajamas. Cast members were Charles Gross, Karen Heald, Steve Wiemer, Connie Odelberg, and Byron Walcher. Cindy Osborne handled all the directing chores. South Pacific .. .1971 South Pacific by Rodgers and Hammerstein was chosen to be the first musical at CHS. Needless to say, it was a huge suc- cess and will long be remembered as one of the all-time greats in the school's history. Under the direction of vocal director Lloyd Clark, drama director Carol Stewart, and orchestra director Larry Morris, 100 students brought a distant dream from rags to riches. The cast consisted of Karen Sorter (Nellie Forbish), Bruce Anderson (Emile DeBeque), Lincoln Hall (Luther Billis), and Wendi Martin Miffie Blozvich (Bloody Mary), Mark Madsen (Lt. Joe Cable), and Marilyn Redfield (Liat). Choreography was done by Mrs. Anne Saunders. April Showers... These were some of the sights and sounds of April Showers being brought to an audience of over 200 people. This talent show, put on yearly and sponsored by the Central High Music Parents, features some of the best talent in Western Colorado. The competition is split into three categories: vocal music, instrumental music, and dance. Each winner in each division is awarded $10. Judges are chosen from various schools and clubs in and around the Grand Junction area. The Kings and Queens were Rick Hurt and Diane Martin-band; and John Black and Cindy Osborne-concert choir. University of Northern Colorado Jazz Ensembles Traveling on their way to the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Jazz Festival in Salt Lake City, Utah, the UNC Jazz Ensembles stopped off to play an hour con- cert in the Central Auditorium. Each raft, defying description and engineering design, was homemade and carried a crew of four. Despite the cold time spent in the frigid waters of the creek, no one could deny that he had a fine time doing something that was a bit out of the ordi- nary. WARRIOR SPORTS 1971 Central Cross Country 1970 While other high school athletes are perform- ing before thousands of people and grabbing the newspaper headlines, many athletes just as dedicated are performing in relative ob- scurity. Cross country running requires as much or more dedication as football or bas- ketball. It takes a rare individual to excel in the sport. Football is hard work, but the game time glamor makes the price easier to pay. There is very little glamor in cross country, just self satisfaction. 1970C.H.S. Cross Country Team. Seventeenth Annual Colorado J Cl Convention April 17 8 1971 DECA How many times has it been said: How does someone get experi- ence in the working world? DECA is one way young men and women can get workable experience through on-the-job training in local business establishments—department stores, gas stations, restaurants, parts stores, automobile repair, car washes, and the list could go on and on, and on. ' The class teaches girls how to work in offices, banks, radio stations, and other office jobs. It's school in the mornings, then off to jobs in the after- noons—filing, typing, and other office work in the Grand Junction area. Vocational Office Education Drafting Club Drafting Club members take a one-hour class at Central; in addition, they travel to Grand Junction High twice each week for three hours for a school quarter of working with machine tools first hand. Drafting is taught by Carl Craig.
