The wise medicine man knows that fig- ures and forms in the smoke of the evening fire are omens conjured by the good spirits. On a partially cloudy day or starry nite, if you look closely into the sky, you can make out the out- lines of a proud Indian figure. It is the great spirit Tawasi. Tawasi who's name implies good luck has extended his best wishes through the years to all war- riors. sparking them on to new heights of achieve - ment in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in other fields of endeavor. It is to honor Tawasi that this year's theme of Indian mythology is being carried out. STAFF OF THE TAWASI EdItor-in-Chief REGINA McNAMARA Business Manager GENE MOORE Advisor AL TOTH One might think from this picture that Mr. Toth has to whip the journalism class to get them to work but actually they have done much for this year's journalism department. 4 ICATION Indian lore refers to the happy hunting ground as a place of green meadows, eternal sunshine, and bountiful wildlife. It is the heaven of all good Warriors and maidens. In memory of our three Warrior maids, Vonna, Charlotte, and Kathy; who have passed on to the happy hunting ground, we the staff of this year's annual dedicate the '58 Tawasi. ADMINISTRATION I. K. THE ACADEMIC - YEAR This is Gene Moore and Vera Simon presenting ' Smoke Signals From the Warriors. ’ Academically our school year was full of many varied projects. In the field of science the first Western Slope Science Fair was held, and sponsored by our science club, which, incidentally, took first place. In government our students participated in Boys’ and Girls' County Day. Two lucky warriors had their pictures taken with the Honorable Steve McNichols, governor of the state. Fragments of ancient Indian tools from a by- gone era were found in Utah by students working on a biology and geology project. Not to overlook math in this sputnik era, Mr. C. Chavies's trigonometry and solid geometry class has been busy on many math projects as well as class work. The outlook for the future looks bright indeed with the gradual growth of the new senior high when new facilities can be introduced to the curriculum. This is Gene Moore and Vera Simon now sign- ing off for 'Smoke Signals '. 74 Quarterback Fullback DAN HANSAN CLARENCE BOWMAN All-Conference Right End Right Tackle BILL GOLDEN DWAIN PARTEE Honorable Mention Right Guard Center DON PAQUETTE GARY NELSON All-Conference Co-Captains DAN HANSAN CLARENCE BOWMAN Assistant Coaches JOHN KRIZMAN and DAN ROBERTS Coach MOE KRUETZ 76 Left Guard Left Tackle TED DUCRAY REX PHELPS Left End GENE VEATCH Right Halfback TONY MARTINEZ Left Halfback TRINADAD SILVA Honorable Mention 6 Central at Meeker 0 Central at Cortez 20 Central at Palisade 7 Nucla at Central 0 Olathe at Central 19 Central at Gunnison 6 Delta at Central 0 Central at Fruita 14 Paonia at Central PLAYOFFS AT PAONIA 6 Central Gunnison 12 Central Paonia FRONT ROW, left to right: T. The Warrior five got to the state tournament beating the Fruita Wildcats, 57-45 in the Delta tour- nament. Going over to Denver they upset the two state favorites. The Warriors beat Leadville the 1956 state champions and Jefferson the 1957 state cham- pions each by 1 point. Jefferson was the favorite to take the state championship this year. This is further than any Central team has gone in the history of the school. 78 Hansen tries a lay-up BASKETBALLERS AT STATE Bo goes up for one at Delta FIRST ROW, left to right: Trinidad Silva, 37; Clarence Bowman, 33; Bill Cooper, 35; Ronnie Faulkner, 32; Dwain Partee, 36. We hope they can do as good or better next year. 81 Central's Wrestling squad, under the supervision of Coach Roberts and Coach McPeek, came out with a 9-5-1 record for the season. The losses were to 3 different schools and the wins from 9 different schools, Wins included Gunnison, Palisade, Durango, Paonia, Cortez, Nucla, Olathe, Delta, and Grand Junction's ”B squad.
