u— TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY 7 Ufl i t£idc y i k tw r TAWASI FOREWORD When high school days are only fond memories, and friends and classmates a dim recollection, it is the heartfelt hope that we, the Annual Staff of 1952, have recorded these experiences in TAWASI, a book of a life - long monument to our own dear Central High. Published by the Annual Staff Central High School Grand Junction, Colorado 1951 - 1952 The Annual Staff takes great pleasure in dedicating the 1951 - 52 yearbook to you, Mr. Nisley. We, who represent a younger generation, feel fortunate in having had the association of a teacher who has so unselfishly dedicated his life to education and youth. We have so many problems - - at least they seem many to us. We have many de - cisions to make as do people of all ages. But you have always understood our problems and been willing to help us. The students and faculty of this school admire your wide span of knowledge in so many fields, but they also admire your ever present calmness, dignity, and sense of humor. In future years as we look through our 1952 annual and recall memories of C. H. S . you, Mr. Nisley, will play a leading role in the most cherished phase of our lives - - our high school days here in the halls and classrooms of CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL. The ship had been built by Royal Collard, the famous scientist, and Pat Chambers, his beautiful assistant, Mr. Rigdon went back to Central to again try to coach a winning football team. Mrs. Gaither, however, became interested in the whereabouts of the class of '52. She bought a copy of the New York Times. She read an account by its editor, Don Mundell, who had once been the office boy. There was also a picture of the notorious play - boy. Bob Carpendale, whom she had given up long ago, as a retired millionaire residing in Florida. As she wandered down 5th. Avenue she spied a brunette hurrying toward the Palace Theatre. Why, it's Thelma King, she cried. Thelma stopped and told her that Betty Spitzer had finally realized her ambitions at Carnegie Hall, but it wasn't quite the way she had planned it. She's the scrubwoman. Ted Griffith, however, is playing his clarinet with the Guy Lombardo Orchestra and Barbara Bradshaw is serving him Wimpys from the Spot now. Yes, she's finally a car hop. She hap - pened upon a little side street and discovered the eccentric artist, Janice Jaquette, living in her garrett in Greenwich Village, Janice told her that Nelda Price was a struggling star playing in Macbeth at the Empire and that Shirley Pratt was the make - up director. In the same theatre were Carol Doudy and the great lover of the screen, Oren Williams. Ray Guerrie was the new A1 Jolson and Donna Lee was his business manager. Dorothy Dawson had created quite a stir. Being the first woman President, she had appointed no one and needed no one to help her run the government. LeRoy Robertson is head of a revolt to get a man back in office, but since the women outnumber the men, it's not going to do them any good . Because of Mrs. Gaither's unusual experience, she was interviewed by the famous Hollywood reporter, Bonnie Keeling. She said that Bill Irwin had inherited quite a fortune from Jerry Baysinger, who was last seen reclining on a desert island surrounded by dozens of beautiful girls. After arriving at the airport she hailed a porter to carry her luggage. It turned out to be Norman Sadler. The plane arrived and off stepped Joe Scoggins, who had been to Europe to compete in the Olympics. Right behind him was Wilma Lampshire, the movie actress, and her director, Carl Coleman. The stew - ardess, Rachel Anderegg, told her that Margie Pegg was married to the pilot. Jack Rhy, and they were raising their own baseball team. Before she boarded the plane for Colorado, Wesley Wood drove up in his red jet - propelled jeep. He is the president of the Willy Co. and his most brilliant designer is David Olson. She spied a woman who looked slightly familiar. Yes, it was Shirley Britton, the Private Eye . She was on a case to find the Notre Dame football coach, Gerald Callison. It seems he'd lost 31 games in a row, and he had skipped the country. Continuing on her way Mrs. Gaither flew over Kansas and below she could see the farmerettes, Naomi Brown and Patsey Miller busy at work. Seeing a cloud of dust, she thought it must be a whirl wind, but it was only Mary Phipps in her convertible tearing over to Nebraska. Television had come to the Grand Valley and there in front of Tom Clark’s was a program featuring Nancy Woodward and Mary Hetherington , with Carol Jenkins as their manager. Soonthesong, Only Make Believe, began playing. She recognized the beautiful voice of Betty Stout, the new star of Bob Hope's program. On the same program was one of Jack Baysinger’s records, Beautiful Brown Eyes. ” He is the widely acclaimed successor. Back at Central Mrs. Gaither related her experiences and Mrs. Rigdon accounted for the others in the class. Two of them are back at Central. They are Jim Bair, Assistant Coach, and Vern Davis, Band Director. Percy Campbell is the new director of the Charles Atlas Body - Building Institute and Lawrence Pickens is proprietorofaTaxidermyShop. Shirley Oberly is still writing letters to Chicago and Viola Bauer is pitching for the New York Yankees. On the cover of the True Confessions magazine she saw the picture of Carl Marchun. It seems that the public is tired of pretty girls, so they made a drastic change. George Hammond is a handsome sailor boy and Marvin Smith is his commanding officer. Mrs. Rigdon informed Mrs. Gaither that Gary Baker is a doctor now, Beth Barrick a noted dietitian, and J. L. Bowler an interne at the same hospital. Norma Almond was Pin - Up Girl of 1962. Ray Ladage is a parachutist and Don Bowman is his manager. At the recruiting office Admiral Harold Cameille is now the big wheel of the navy. Bob Selan is president of the May Co. and Travis Hillis is the vice President. Carl Dowell of the NBC studios put Sinatra out of business. So, Mrs. Gaither, who is now retired on her peach ranch, went home to a well-earned rest and to let the class of '52 live up to these fantasies. First row; Pond, D. This year they had the opportunity to play the home games at the Lincoln Park Stadium. The season opened with a game with the Junction B at Lincoln Park. The final score was 7 - 0 in favor of Junction B . Central lost its first conference game to Rifle by a score of 6 - 0. Central took on Glenwood in which Central won its first conference game 7-0. Central then went on to win its second straight game over Fuita by a score of 32 - 12. The homecoming game was a lose when Craig beat Central 14 - 13 in a very close battle. Central went on to be defeated by Palisade 21 - 12. Olathe came to meet Central in a very close battle, but Olathe slipped past with a score of 16 - 15. The last game was a very bad one for Central when they played Meeker. Central lost by a score of 38 - 6. Even though several of the members of the team were unable to play full time because of injuries, Central had a very good season. Out - standing players for the season who merit mention are Carl Dowell, Dave Olson, Gerald Callison, Jim Bair, and Joe Scoggins. Jim Bair and Carl Dowell were voted captains of the season by the other members of the team. FOOTBALL CITY GAS CO. Drive Out and Save WRESTLERS R. Pruett H. The Central Warriors coached by George Smeltzer started the first few games of the season successfully. The Central Warriors lost the first conference game with Craig. During the season they played, with few exceptions, two games a week. The breaking of a tie with Montrose by playing overtime was a really thrilling game of the season. During Christmas they accepted the invitation to the Paonia Tournament. Although they didn't have very good luck, it gave them good experience and they had a chance to see how the teams played. This year there were four returning lettermen of the five Seniors who are graduating. They are Bill Irwin, Jim Bair, Oren Williams, and Carl Dowell. George Hammond is also a Senior. The B Squad, which is made up of Sophomores and a few Juniors, was coached by Rodger Rigdon. Although they didn't score too often, they had valuable experience which they hope to put to use when they become Warriors. At this writing the season is not over so it cannot be determined who leads in the league but the Warriors hope to go to the Delta tournament and it is expected that they will make a good showing for themselves. At the present time the Warriors are in second place in the conference standing. We have yet to play Fruita and Rifle. With two victories we can cop the title. The games played so far with the scares are as follows: Palisade 28 Central 29 Montrose 45 Central Paonia 33 Central 42 Fruits 42 Central Hotchkiss 29 Central 31 Paonia 29 Central Craig 43 Central 35 «fle 18 Central Meeker 41 Central 35 Craig 3« Central Palisade 26 Central 24 Montrose 42 Central Glenwood 30 Central 31 Glenwood 38 Central Delta 43 Central 41 29 39 2$ 39 4« SI 35 CARL DOWELL Guard WORLD MOTOR CO.
